The B-segment car market in Malaysia has long been dominated by balanced and practical models. When consumers choose a car, they value the economy of daily commuting as well as the space and features for family use. The 2021 Honda City 1.5 RS, as a hybrid version, not only continues the reputation of the City series but also enters the market with more efficient power and richer safety features. This test drive focuses on evaluating its hybrid system's actual performance, space practicality, and whether its features meet the needs of local users.

From a distance, the overall style of the 2021 City 1.5 RS appears sportier than the standard version. The front fascia features a large blacked-out grille, complemented by RS-exclusive red accents, making it highly recognizable. The side profile has smooth lines, with a character line stretching from the front to the rear of the car, while the 16-inch black alloy wheels further enhance the sporty feel. The rear LED taillights adopt a through-type design, creating a clear visual effect when illuminated, and the diffuser-styled rear bumper also aligns with the RS's sporty positioning. The lighting system is equipped with LED headlights and daytime running lights as standard across the lineup. The automatic headlights function conveniently switches in tunnels or on overcast days.

Opening the door, the interior features black as the main color tone, accented with silver trims, presenting a simple and practical layout. The center console is fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen that is responsive and supports the Sound Plus feature. The quality delivered by its 8-speaker setup performs well within its class. The 7-inch TFT instrument panel provides clear vehicle status information, including the energy flow of the hybrid system. Regarding materials, the top of the center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, which feel decent and match the expectations of this price range. The seats are manually adjustable but offer good support, and the rear seats feature a 60:40 split-folding design, allowing for extended trunk space. In terms of spatial performance, the vehicle's dimensions are 4553mm in length, 1748mm in width, and 1467mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2600mm. The front row offers ample space, while the rear legroom provides about two fist-widths of clearance for passengers measuring 175cm in height, with sufficient headroom. Regarding storage capacity, door panel storage compartments can fit two bottles of water, the central armrest box offers moderate space, and the trunk provides a standard volume of 410L, which is sufficient for daily family use.

In the powertrain department, the 2021 City 1.5 RS is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and an electric motor hybrid system, with the engine delivering a maximum horsepower of 109PS, paired with an E-CVT transmission. During daily driving, the electric motor is engaged during the initial acceleration phase, providing quick and smooth power response without the jolting sensation of conventional fuel-powered vehicles. During acceleration, the engine and the electric motor work together to deliver linear power output. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 9.9 seconds, sufficient for daily commuting and overtaking needs. There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, power output is relatively gentle, suitable for congested urban conditions. In Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, providing more power reserves.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the vehicle maintains stable posture when cornering. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson independent suspension, which effectively absorbs most minor vibrations on bumpy road surfaces, ensuring rear passengers do not feel significant discomfort. When crossing speed bumps, the suspension quickly rebounds without excessive swaying. The chassis tuning is biased towards comfort while maintaining a certain level of firmness, balancing family use with light handling requirements. Fuel efficiency is a strength of hybrid vehicles. In actual tests, the fuel consumption was approximately 4.5L/100km under city traffic conditions and about 5.0L/100km on highways. The overall fuel consumption is close to the official figure of 5.2L/100km, showcasing excellent fuel economy.

In terms of ride comfort, the in-car noise control is impressive. Wind noise and tire noise at high speeds are within an acceptable range, and the engine noise during engagement is relatively minimal. The seat comfort is good, and long periods of sitting do not feel tiring. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents, which can quickly adjust the interior temperature and enhance the experience for rear passengers. The energy recovery system offers different intensity options, and when set to the highest level, noticeable deceleration can be achieved by releasing the accelerator, reducing the need for braking and improving driving convenience.

In terms of safety features, the 2021 City 1.5 RS comes standard with 6 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, and active braking, making its safety performance among the best in its class. Additionally, it is equipped with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, which make parking very convenient.

To summarize, the core advantages of the 2021 Honda City 1.5 RS lie in the fuel economy of its hybrid system, its abundant safety features, spacious interior, and sporty exterior design. Compared to the Toyota Vios Hybrid of the same segment, the City 1.5 RS offers richer configurations, especially in terms of safety features and entertainment systems. While the pricing of both is similar, the City excels in spatial performance. With balanced overall performance, it is well-suited for family users who value fuel economy, safety features, and space, as well as for young consumers pursuing sporty appearance and smooth driving. If you're looking for a balanced and practical hybrid B-segment car, the 2021 Honda City 1.5 RS is worth considering.

This little car's power is really strong; it leaves a bunch of cars behind at green lights, but the interior feels a bit plasticky!

Been driving the City RS for almost two years now. During morning rush hours, the E-CVT is as smooth as drinking iced coffee, and it's not sluggish when accelerating to overtake. Three friends squeezing in the back eating durians don't feel cramped, and the trunk can fit two carry-on suitcases with room for a folding umbrella. The only thing that's a bit concerning is that the spare tire is just a tire repair kit, so you’d need roadside assistance in case of a puncture. Other than that, it’s very hassle-free!

This City RS has been driven for nearly two years. The motor engages smoothly during traffic jams during commuting, and it’s not sluggish when accelerating for overtaking. The back row can seat three colleagues without being cramped, and the trunk can fit camping gear for the weekends. The safety features are solid; the autonomous emergency braking once helped me avoid a rear-end collision, which gave peace of mind. Fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km, and refueling once can last a week, making it very suitable for daily use.

Morning rush hour, darting through small alleys feels great! Press the 1.5RS accelerator and it shoots forward, way more agile than the old car~

Last Saturday, I took my parents to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just past Rawang, we encountered a heavy downpour. Even with the wipers on at full speed, I had to squint to see. While navigating the series of hairpin turns, the car stayed very stable, and the E-CVT accelerated smoothly without any jerks. Suddenly, the car in front braked abruptly, and City’s autonomous braking system beeped to alert me. Before I could react, it automatically slowed down — this safety feature is definitely not just for show! However, the airflow from the rear air conditioning felt a bit weak, and my dad said it felt stuffy after sitting for a while. Fuel consumption is impressively low; for a round trip of 120 kilometers, only two fuel bars were used. The HEV was definitely worth buying.
