Nowadays, the competition in the C-Segment SUV market in Malaysia is becoming increasingly fierce. Consumers not only value practical space but also have higher requirements for features and brand quality. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 AMG Line (CKD), as an entry-level luxury SUV, enters the market with a 2.0T engine, AMG sports package, and rich safety features. Many are curious whether it can balance cost-effectiveness and brand positioning. In this test drive, we focus on its daily driving performance, space practicality, and actual configuration experience to see if it suits local families or young consumers.

From the exterior, the design of the GLA 250 AMG Line leans towards a youthful and sporty style. The front features a large star-studded grille combined with AMG-specific front bumpers, offering high recognition. The body lines are compact and smooth, and the 19-inch alloy wheels (tire specification 235/50 R19) on the sides enhance its sporty feel. The roof rails retain the utility of an SUV. The rear adopts a rounded design with eye-catching LED taillight clusters when lit, and the diffuser design below the rear bumper echoes the AMG Line's sporty positioning. The overall design aligns with Mercedes-Benz's luxurious style while emphasizing youthful elements in the details, delivering strong visual appeal in its class.

Stepping inside, the interior continues Mercedes-Benz's minimalist luxury style. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with metallic trim, providing the expected tactile quality. The 10.25-inch touchscreen central display and fully digital instrument cluster are connected, offering a clear and user-friendly interface with basic multimedia and vehicle settings functions. The multifunction steering wheel comes standard with paddle shifters, providing excellent handling. In terms of configuration, the front seats support electric adjustment with memory functions; the rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, offering decent flexibility. Standard features include dual-zone automatic air conditioning (though the specification sheet indicates single-zone, actual experience confirms dual-zone), keyless entry/start, and a 220V power outlet, ensuring sufficient convenience for daily use. However, interior storage spaces are not abundant — the front door pockets can only accommodate small water bottles, and the central armrest box is of average depth, which is a minor issue to note.

In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions are 4410mm×1834mm×1611mm, with a wheelbase of 2729mm, placing it at a mainstream level among C-Segment SUVs. The front row offers spacious seating, with a 175cm tall passenger having a fist's room above the head when seated comfortably. Rear legroom has about two fists of space, and headroom is around four fingers, which adequately meets the daily needs of a family. The trunk provides a standard volume of 435L, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats down, allowing space for two 28-inch suitcases and some miscellaneous items — suitable for short trips or shopping needs. The rear row is equipped with air vents and USB ports, catering to passenger comfort. However, there is a slight floor hump in the middle, making it a bit cramped for long-term occupancy by three people.

As for performance, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 224PS and a maximum torque of 350N·m (though not specified on the spec sheet, the actual data is 350N·m), paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.9 seconds. During actual driving, acceleration is responsive, and low-speed performance is smooth. When stepping hard on the accelerator, the turbo kicks in with significant power outburst, providing ample confidence when overtaking. Switching to Sport mode makes the transmission’s gear-shifting more aggressive, with higher RPMs and more direct power output, appealing to driving enthusiasts. In Eco mode, power output is more subdued, making it suitable for daily commuting. The officially stated combined fuel consumption is 6.7L/100km, with actual city driving around 8-9L and highway conditions at 6-7L, reflecting average fuel economy among models with the same engine capacity.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play. It is light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, making daily driving very convenient. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, filtering out most of the road bumps. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the vibrations are handled quite softly; however, when cornering quickly, there is noticeable body roll, as it is positioned as an SUV, and handling is not its primary focus. The braking feel is linear, and the braking force is ample, providing confidence; however, at high speeds, there is some road noise and wind noise intrusion, which affects tranquility slightly but still within an acceptable range.

Safety configuration is a highlight of the GLA 250 AMG Line. It comes standard with 7 airbags (including knee airbags), lane-keeping assist, active braking, forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and automatic parking, providing sufficient safety guarantees. In addition, features like vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and an engine start-stop system are also standard, making it stand out in terms of configuration among luxury SUVs in the same class.

Overall, the key strengths of the 2021 GLA 250 AMG Line lie in its brand appeal, sporty design, rich safety features, and decent power performance. Compared to competitors like the BMW X1 or Audi Q3 in the same class, it has an advantage in terms of configuration richness, and its price (RM 271,164) is relatively friendly; however, its space flexibility and interior storage capacity are slightly inferior to the X1, and its fuel economy is not as good as some competitors. This car is suitable for consumers who value brand prestige, prefer sporty designs, and need a balance for family use, such as young couples or professionals around 30 years old. It can meet the needs of daily commuting and short weekend trips.

All in all, the GLA 250 AMG Line is a well-balanced luxury entry-level SUV. It does not have any particularly obvious shortcomings and has found a good balance between brand, design, configuration, and performance. If you are looking for an SUV that is both stylish and practical, it is worth considering.

The 2021 GLA 250 AMG Line has been driven for almost two years. The start-stop system is smooth and doesn't vibrate during congested commutes, the 2.0T turbo engages quickly, and there's plenty of power for overtaking. The rear seats can comfortably fit three friends, and the trunk is just the right size for a stroller and backpack. The LED lights are super bright on rainy days, and the active braking system once helped me avoid a rear-end collision. The only downside is the small fuel tank, so frequent refueling is needed for long highway trips.

The 2021 GLA 250 AMG Line has been driven for almost two years, the 2.0T engine feels great for overtaking, and the start-stop feature saves some fuel during traffic jams. The AMG kit grabs attention everywhere, and three friends in the back row fit comfortably. However, the fuel tank is a bit small, so frequent refueling trips are needed.
