Specs

In the Malaysian C-Segment SUV market, models that combine performance and practicality have always been the focus of young families and driving enthusiasts. The 2021 MINI Countryman John Cooper Works (JCW), as the high-performance version under the brand, breaks the stereotype of MINI being a "cute commuter car" with its core selling points of 306PS maximum horsepower and an all-wheel-drive system. In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating whether its performance matches the sporty positioning of JCW, while also assessing its practicality for daily use to see if this "pocket rocket SUV" can strike a balance between excitement and functionality.

From the exterior, the 2021 Countryman JCW retains MINI's signature round headlights and square contours but introduces a lot of sporty details. The front features a black honeycomb grille paired with air flow design elements on both sides, enhancing its aggressiveness; the two raised lines on the hood directly respond to its high-performance identity. The side profile of the car is compact, with 19-inch five-spoke sporty rims paired with 235/45 R19 tires, creating a full and robust visual impact; the "JCW" badge on the fenders and the black decoration strips on the side skirts further enhance its recognition. At the rear, the round twin exhaust pipes on either side are classic designs for the JCW model, paired with a small spoiler and smoked LED taillights, imparting a sporty yet understated overall style.

Inside, the interior continues MINI's unique retro and tech-infused design style. The dashboard primarily uses black soft-touch materials with silver accents, and the circular design of the air vents and central control buttons maintains the brand's identity. The 8.8-inch touchscreen display features the Harman Kardon sound system (12 speakers + Sound Plus functionality), providing smooth operation and excellent sound quality; the 5-inch digital instrument cluster and the heads-up display system clearly display speed, RPM, and navigation information, enhancing driving convenience. Regarding features, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, manually adjustable front seats (with lumbar support adjustment), and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats are all standard, meeting daily usage needs. However, the manually adjustable front seats may seem slightly insufficient compared to competitors in the same price range, lacking the convenience of electric adjustment.

In terms of space, the body dimensions of the Countryman JCW are 4299mm×1822mm×1557mm, with a wheelbase of 2670mm. As a C-Segment SUV, the rear legroom is quite adequate for passengers around 175cm tall, while the headroom is about two fists high, offering decent overall comfort. The trunk space is 450 liters, which can be expanded to 1390 liters by folding down the rear seats, making it capable of accommodating large suitcases or baby strollers, meeting the needs of family users. For storage, the front and rear door pockets, central armrest storage, and glove box offer moderate capacity, while the front row also includes a 220V/230V power outlet for convenient external device charging.

The dynamic driving experience is the core advantage of the Countryman JCW. It is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 306PS and a maximum torque of 450N·m (official data not explicitly stated, but the actual experience is consistent with high-performance engines of the same displacement). It is matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. When starting, the throttle response is sensitive, the maximum torque can be output at 1750rpm, and it only takes 5.1 seconds to accelerate from 0-100km/h, providing a strong sense of thrust. Mid-to-high-speed acceleration remains powerful, and the gearbox shifts quickly during overtaking. Combined with paddle shifters, it can bring a significant driving pleasure. The driving modes are divided into Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, and when switched to Sport+ mode, the exhaust sound becomes more intense, and the suspension stiffness is also increased, making it suitable for aggressive driving.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the body exhibits excellent roll control during cornering with strong suspension support. The multi-link independent rear suspension effectively filters small vibrations when driving on bumpy roads while maintaining stability. The all-wheel-drive system reasonably distributes power between the front and rear wheels on slippery roads or in corners, enhancing traction. During daily driving, the suspension performance in Comfort mode is relatively smooth, suitable for city commuting. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.9L/100km, while actual city driving fuel consumption is around 8-9L/100km, and highway consumption is about 6-7L/100km, which is acceptable for a high-performance SUV.

In terms of braking performance, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes provide sufficient braking force, and the brake pedal feels linear. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains stability without significant nose-diving. Noise control performs well, with wind and tire noise effectively suppressed at high speeds. Only during rapid acceleration is the engine noise slightly audible in the cabin, but it is not harsh. Regarding seat comfort, the front seats offer good support and are not tiring for long drives. The rear seats are soft and provide comfort levels suitable for family use.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2021 MINI Countryman JCW lie in its powerful performance, precise handling experience, and unique design style. Compared to its competitors such as the BMW X1 M35i or Mercedes-Benz GLA 35 in the same class, the price of the Countryman JCW (RM 383,463) is slightly lower and offers a more distinctive brand identity and driving pleasure. However, its interior configuration (such as manual seats) and technological feel are slightly lacking. This car is suitable for two types of customers: young consumers who pursue driving pleasure and value its high performance and unique design, and practical family users who can meet daily commuting and family travel needs while occasionally enjoying passionate driving.

The 2021 MINI Countryman JCW is a C-Segment SUV that balances performance and practicality. It retains MINI's brand characteristics while providing the driving experience of a high-performance vehicle. If you are looking for a practical SUV that is not overly flashy but full of driving excitement, this would be a good choice.

The previously driven Japanese SUV was too "zen-like", so switching to the Countryman JCW was all about its 306 hp 2.0T! The early morning rush hour in Malaysia was congested like a sardine can, but its explosive power of 5.1 seconds for 0-100 km/h made squeezing through the traffic and overtaking effortless. The all-wheel drive remained incredibly stable on the rainy highways. On weekends, driving the family to Genting Highlands, its cornering on mountain roads felt even more agile than a friend's GLA 45, and the Harman Kardon sound system playing Malaysian songs was super impressive. The retro round screen in the interior is very MINI, but the manual seat adjustments can get tiring on long trips, and the rear seats are slightly cramped for three adults. However, the 450L trunk can fit a stroller and camping gear, making it practical for family outings. At 380,000 MYR, it's not cheap, but the 4-year unlimited mileage warranty plus standard features like HUD and active braking provide a strong sense of security. Downsides? The fuel consumption is 2L higher than the official 6.9L, but for a performance car, it's worth it!

Every time I go over a speed bump, it feels like riding a roller coaster. My butt is almost numb from the bumping. This performance is just too "hardcore"!

Last Saturday, I drove my parents to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. As soon as we left the Kuala Lumpur city area, we encountered a rain shower. The rain-sensing wipers automatically cleared the raindrops, and the LED headlights lit up promptly. On the way up the mountain, with many bends, the 2.0T turbocharged engine's torque erupting at 1750 rpm made overtaking smooth, and the all-wheel drive provided stable road grip, but the rear seats were a little bumpy over speed bumps. The muddy orchard path didn't cause any skidding, though the body got some mud spots, and the red and white JCW kit was still quite eye-catching. On the way back, there was traffic. The HUD displayed the speed so there was no need to look down. The 6 airbags and active braking assured my parents, but the fuel consumption was slightly higher than the official 6.9L; in city traffic jams, it almost reached 9L.

Every morning rush hour, weaving through traffic for overtaking, 5.1-second acceleration gives full confidence! The back seat can fit two friends and a backpack without feeling cramped, Harman Kardon paired with rainy-day commuting is amazing ~ but the fuel consumption, stepping on it hard makes the wallet tremble, however, with a 4-year unlimited mileage warranty, the sense of security is through the roof!
