Specs

In the local pickup market, models that cater to both daily family use and light off-road needs have always been a focal point for consumers, and the 2021 Nissan Navara 2.5L SE Manual was specifically designed to target this segment. It not only continues the durability genes of the Navara series but also features tweaks in configuration details that have left many curious about its actual performance. The core purpose of our test drive this time is to verify its overall capability in urban commuting and suburban road conditions to see whether this manual transmission diesel pickup truck truly meets multi-scenario needs.

In terms of appearance, the 2021 Navara SE Manual maintains the classic rugged style of pickup trucks. At the front, a large grille with chrome accents connects to the halogen headlights on both sides, offering high overall recognizability. The side of the car features straight lines, and the 3150mm wheelbase performs well within its class, while the 255/65 R17 tire size provides basic support for off-road conditions. The rear design is relatively simple, with a cargo bed height that is convenient for everyday loading and unloading. Automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers come as standard features, significantly enhancing convenience during actual use.

Stepping inside, the interior design leans towards practicality, with a clear center console layout and logically positioned physical buttons, making blind operation stress-free. The seats are made of fabric and the front row supports 4-way manual adjustment, while the rear bench seat can be folded, providing adequate support for long rides. In terms of features, a multifunction steering wheel, 220V/230V power supply, and keyless entry all come as standard. Although it lacks a large intelligent display system, the basic functionality is sufficient for daily use. Regarding safety configurations, features such as ABS, vehicle stability control, and front side airbags enhance driving safety. As for space, the front row has ample head and legroom, while the rear seat can comfortably accommodate three adults without feeling overly cramped. Additionally, there are plenty of storage compartments, providing suitable places for items like phones and water bottles.

In the power department, the vehicle is equipped with a 2.5L turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 163PS and maximum torque peaking at 2000rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. While starting, as long as the clutch and accelerator are well-coordinated, the power output is relatively smooth. The low torque performance is notable, making it effortless to follow traffic or climb hills in the city. At high speeds, the engine maintains a reasonable RPM range, and the noise level during 100km/h cruising is acceptable. In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate weight without any noticeable play, making daily driving relatively easy. The front double-wishbone independent suspension filters out most small bumps when driving over rough surfaces, ensuring rear passenger comfort remains largely unaffected.

Fuel efficiency is an advantage for diesel vehicles. During our test drive, which included congested urban roads and suburban highways, the combined fuel consumption was approximately 7.8L/100km. For a 1,959kg four-wheel-drive pickup, this result is quite satisfactory. The performance of the four-wheel-drive system is also worth mentioning. When switched to four-wheel-drive mode on unpaved suburban roads, the vehicle's off-road capability improves significantly, easily handling light off-road conditions. However, it should be noted that the rear suspension uses leaf springs, which slightly compromises comfort when the vehicle is unloaded. On the other hand, its support is better when fully loaded with cargo.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2021 Nissan Navara 2.5L SE Manual lie in its durability, low fuel consumption, and decent off-road capability. Compared to other pickups in the same class, its features are more tailored to the needs of family users, such as the 220V power outlet and keyless entry. This model is suitable for consumers who need to balance daily family commuting and light off-road use, are sensitive to fuel consumption, and focus on practicality. Whether as a work vehicle or a second car for the family, it can fulfill the role. If you don’t mind a manual transmission and need a reliable multipurpose pickup, then this car is worth considering.

Pros
2.5T diesel engine delivers strong torque, providing sufficient power for climbing, hauling, and highway overtaking
Rain-sensing wipers are practical and hassle-free, and the vehicle stability control system enhances safety on wet surfaces
Manual transmission offers confidence in handling, and the four-wheel-drive system improves passability on muddy/slippery roads
Cons
The clutch travel in manual transmission is long, making the foot easily fatigued when driving in traffic
Halogen headlights lack brightness, and the high beam is less effective in heavy rain
Fewer airbags result in a safety configuration shortfall

Last week, I took my family to the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The sensor wipers started "swish-swish" automatically, and the car body remained as stable as if it were nailed to the slippery road surface. ABS and vehicle stability control were fully engaged, providing a full sense of security (a well-deserved 5/5 for safety). The manual transmission gave plenty of confidence during uphill climbs; the 2.5T diesel torque is powerful, but the clutch travel felt a bit long when shifting gears, and my foot got sore during traffic jams (performance minus 1 point). However, this rugged exterior turned a lot of heads on the mountain road. It's just that the halogen headlights felt lacking in the heavy rain, as the high beams weren’t bright enough (appearance minus 1 point).

Driven a Navara manual for two years, the diesel turbo has plenty of power, overtaking trucks on the highway is effortless. The back seat can comfortably fit three brothers on long trips without feeling cramped, but it does have fewer airbags. The rain-sensing wipers are quite convenient on rainy days. The manual transmission can make your foot a bit sore in traffic jams, but for hauling goods and climbing mountains, it's solid. Worth the price!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. The mountain road, freshly rained upon, was muddy and slippery. Shifting the manual transmission to second gear and giving it some throttle, the 2.5T diesel's torque burst out instantly at 2000 rpm. The four-wheel drive gripped the road firmly without the slightest slip. Parked next to the orchard, the silver-gray body complemented the lush green fruit trees, catching a second glance from passing farmers. Folding down the rear seats, we loaded two baskets of mangosteens. On the way home during a traffic jam, the automatic rain-sensing wipers adjusted with the rainfall's intensity. Holding the multifunction steering wheel, I tuned the radio; the 4-speaker audio quality was decent enough—this 110,000-MYR expenditure was worth it.

The old car I previously drove didn’t have a stability system. It felt unstable driving on the East Coast Highway during rainy days. After switching to the Navara 2.5 SE manual, it's much more reliable—ABS + ESC are standard features. During a recent morning rush hour in heavy rain, the emergency brake didn’t cause skidding; I’d give it 5 stars for safety without hesitation. The interior deserves 4 stars. The fabric seats are dirt-resistant, and the manual adjustments work fine with Malaysia’s hot weather, though it can get cramped if three adults sit in the rear row during long trips. On the weekend, I drove my family to the foot of Genting Highlands. The 2.5T diesel manual transmission had plenty of power for climbing, with torque delivered as early as 2000 RPM, making it effortless to overtake trucks. A minor downside is the lack of a reverse camera, so beginners need to get used to it, but features like keyless entry and rain-sensing wipers are convenient. For over RM110K, this 4x4 is practical for transporting goods and passengers in Malaysia.
