As the demand for high-value family cars in Malaysia's B-segment sedan market continues to grow, the 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT has become one of the mainstream choices in this segment, attracting the attention of many family users with its balanced configuration and affordable pricing. The core selling points of this car are its 5-year/150,000 km long warranty, a class-leading 510L trunk space, and standard intelligent connectivity features. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether its actual performance in daily commuting and family trips matches these on-paper advantages.

From the exterior, this car follows Proton's family design language, with an overall style that leans towards a steady yet youthful vibe. The front features a large chrome grille paired with angular halogen headlights on both sides, providing high recognition. The headlights integrate daytime running lights that offer a clear visual effect when lit. The car body side profile has smooth lines, with a waistline stretching from the front to the rear, complemented by 16-inch wheels, achieving a well-proportioned look. At the rear, the taillights are horizontally aligned and connected by a chrome strip, enhancing the visual width, while the black plastic surround below the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. The overall design avoids excessive exaggeration, fitting well with a family car's positioning. Whether parked in a residential area or a shopping mall parking lot, it doesn’t seem out of place.

Stepping inside, the interior design is primarily practical. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials with metallic silver accents, adding a touch of sophistication. The 8-inch touch screen in the center console is the core of the interior, offering moderate resolution and smooth operation. It supports Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration, making it convenient for daily use like navigation and music playback. The instrument cluster features backlit mechanical dials, displaying clear information on RPM, speed, fuel level, and more. In terms of features, the most practical is the keyless entry and start system, eliminating the need to frequently search for keys when getting in and out. The front row is equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, making it convenient for charging electronic devices during long journeys. The rear air conditioning vents, although not independently controlled, significantly improve passengers' comfort in the back. However, the air conditioning system is manually controlled for single zones, requiring the adjustment of knobs for temperature and fan speed, which is less convenient compared to automatic air conditioning.

Space is one of the strengths of this car. With dimensions of 4,366mm × 1,722mm × 1,564mm and a wheelbase of 2,555mm, it ranks above average among its class competitors. The front seats are manually adjustable, providing good support and wrapping. After a 175cm tall driver adjusts the seating position, there is still a fist-width of headroom. The rear space performance is equally impressive, with about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it comfortable even for three adults. The trunk capacity is 510L, with a large opening and regular shape. It can easily accommodate several suitcases or a baby stroller. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, which is practical for carrying elongated items when needed.

In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 109PS and peak torque at 4000rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, the power response is gentle during start-up, making it well-suited for congested urban roads. When pressing the accelerator harder and revving above 3000rpm, the power output becomes more noticeable, meeting overtaking needs as long as you accelerate beforehand. The smoothness of the transmission is notable, with gear shifts causing almost no noticeable jolts, ensuring passenger comfort. There is only a standard driving mode without any selectable sport or eco modes, which may reduce some driving excitement, but for a family car, the standard mode is sufficient for daily use.

The handling and chassis performance align with the positioning of a family car. The steering wheel's precision is acceptable with minimal dead zone, providing light and easy control when changing lanes or turning, making it easy for female drivers to handle. The front suspension employs a MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear suspension is not clearly specified. However, during the actual experience, the suspension absorbs most of the minor vibrations when tackling speed bumps and bumpy urban roads. However, when encountering larger potholes, rear passengers will feel noticeable bumps. During cornering, the body roll is controlled within a reasonable range without obvious swaying sensation. At high speeds, the car's stability is quite good, and the steering wheel gradually becomes heavier, instilling sufficient confidence.

In terms of fuel consumption, we tested in both congested city roads and highways. In city driving conditions, the fuel consumption is approximately 7.5L per 100 kilometers, while on highways it drops to below 6L. The combined fuel consumption is about 6.8L/100km, which is relatively economical for a 1.6L family car and meets the fuel efficiency expectations of family users. Regarding braking performance, the front ventilated disc brakes perform stably. The brake pedal provides a linear feel, and during emergency braking, the vehicle's posture is well-controlled without any obvious forward tilting sensation.

As for driving comfort, noise control is relatively well managed. At low city speeds, engine noise and tire noise are not noticeable. At highway speeds of around 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but doesn't hinder normal conversations. The seat comfort is good with padding that strikes a balance between softness and firmness, ensuring long rides are not tiresome. It is also worth mentioning that the car has an excellent air conditioning system. Even in Malaysia's hot climate, it quickly cools the cabin, ensuring rear passengers remain comfortable.

In conclusion, the key advantages of the 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT lie in its balanced space utilization, practical configurations, and fuel efficiency. The 5-year/150,000 km comprehensive warranty provides added peace of mind for users during long-term usage. Compared to other models in the same segment, such as the Perodua Bezza, it offers larger space and richer features. In comparison to the Honda City, it is more affordable and offers a higher value-for-money. This car is particularly suitable for families who prioritize practicality and economical value. It’s capable of meeting the needs of daily commutes and weekend family trips. For consumers with a limited budget but seeking a reliable family car, this is a good choice.

Overall, the 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT is a family car without significant shortcomings. It excels in aspects like space, configuration, fuel efficiency, and warranty, catering to the core needs of family users. While it doesn't stand out in terms of power and tech features, its performance as a practical family car has been more than satisfactory, making it one of the most recommended options in the B-segment car market.

As the owner of a 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, the two aspects I want to talk about the most are performance and safety. Let’s start with performance. A 4-star rating is really realistic—during daily commutes in Kuala Lumpur’s city traffic, facing the stop-and-go of morning rush hours, the smoothness of the CVT transmission is impeccable; starting and following cars feel very seamless. However, when taking the family to Genting Highlands on weekends, its 1.6L naturally aspirated engine shows its "lack of power" when going uphill. Especially with three people in the back seat plus luggage in the trunk, you have to press the accelerator a bit harder to overtake slow vehicles. But for city driving and highway cruising (within 110 km/h), it’s absolutely sufficient, and the fuel consumption is maintained at around 6.5L/100km, which is quite good for a family car. As for safety, it absolutely deserves a full score! Last year in the outskirts of Penang, I encountered a sudden situation—when the car ahead braked suddenly, I slammed on the brakes, and the ABS and electronic stability control responded very quickly. The car stopped steadily without veering off. Only later did I recall it comes standard with 4 airbags, front and rear sensors, and a reversing camera. When parallel parking in KL’s busy streets, the beeping from the sensors provides reminders, so even a novice doesn’t have to worry about scraping nearby motorcycles. Moreover, Proton's 5-year/150,000km warranty ensures that every time I go for service, they thoroughly check the safety features. This really gives me peace of mind because, with so many motorcycles on Malaysian roads, sufficient safety configurations are necessary to drive without worry. All in all, as a family-oriented B-segment car, its performance is sufficient for daily use, and its safety features exceed expectations, providing a sense of reassurance. For an ordinary family like ours, it really meets our needs.

Owner of 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT
As the owner of a 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT, I've been driving it for nearly two years, relying on it for daily commutes and weekend outings in Malaysia, and overall, I'm quite satisfied! Let me talk about the performance first, I’d rate it 4 out of 5. The combination of the 1.6L naturally aspirated engine and CVT is particularly smooth during KL's morning rush hour traffic. It’s seamless when starting and following cars, and it’s sufficient for city driving. However, when overtaking on the North-South Expressway, you’ll need to press the accelerator a bit more for the revs to go up. The power delivery isn’t especially aggressive, but it’s definitely enough for family use, especially at this price point where you can’t expect too much. As for the interior, I’d give full marks! Although the seat adjustment is manual, the leather feels very comfortable and doesn’t get stuffy even on long rides. The 8-inch touchscreen in the center console is quite responsive, and with CarPlay, navigation to places like Genting or Melaka becomes very convenient. The most surprising feature is the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. Last time I helped a friend move small furniture, I folded the rear seats flat and managed to fit a folding table inside. The space flexibility is amazing, far exceeding the performance of a typical B-class car. For safety, I must give it 5 stars! Malaysia experiences a lot of rainy days, and once on the Penang highway, I encountered sudden heavy rain. The Electronic Stability Control intervened timely, and the steering felt stable without fishtailing, giving maximum safety confidence. The 4 airbags, front and rear parking sensors, plus the reversing camera make even my wife, who’s a beginner, feel no fear of scratching against motorbikes while parking. Proton is really reliable when it comes to safety features. As for appearance, 4 out of 5. The front shield-shaped grille looks quite stylish, and the LED daytime running lights are noticeable even under strong sunlight in the afternoon. However, the side lines are rather conventional, not particularly stunning, but they have a timeless appeal. You won’t feel that the design becomes outdated when driving it around. All in all, being able to buy such a well-rounded car at this price point makes it truly suitable for family use in Malaysia!

As the owner of a 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT for almost two years, I honestly feel that this car is quite suitable for use in Malaysia! The exterior definitely gets full marks! Proton's design is getting better and better, especially the "Infinite Weave" grille at the front, paired with the LED daytime running lights, making it stand out in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams. Every time I park near an LRT station, someone always gives it a second glance~ The body lines are also very smooth, not as rigid as the older models. Young people won't find it outdated at all. For safety, I give it 4 stars, mainly because the basic features are quite practical — 4 airbags, ESP stability control, front and rear sensors + reverse camera. Last time while reversing in the narrow alleys of George Town, Penang, the camera helped me avoid a suddenly emerging motorbike. It really saved the day! But if it could include automatic emergency braking, that would be perfect. After all, you know how Malaysia's traffic can be, with so many unexpected situations. I'd also give the interior 4 stars. The 8-inch touchscreen on the center console is quite responsive, and it's very convenient to use CarPlay navigation for trips to Genting Highlands. The seats are fabric; although they aren't as premium as leather, fabric is actually more breathable in Malaysia's hot weather. Even after sitting for a long time in summer, it doesn't feel sticky. The rear space is spacious for a B-segment car. On weekends, when taking my parents to Malacca, they don’t feel cramped in the back. The only slight downside is that there are a bit too many plastic components, but it's acceptable at this price point. Overall, with a price of just over RM50,000, the value for money is really high. It's suitable for young people who have just started working or for small families!

As the owner of a 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT, having driven it for nearly two years in Malaysia, I’d like to share my honest experience! Exterior gets 4 stars — The overall design is visually pleasing. The Proton emblem on the front and the LED daytime running lights look quite sharp, and the body lines are sleek. When parked next to an LRT (light rail transit) station, it doesn’t feel outdated. However, the rear design is a bit ordinary. If the taillights were sharper, it would be even better. After all, with so many cars on Malaysian roads, having a distinctive look is still pretty important. Performance definitely gets 5 stars! The 1.6L naturally aspirated engine paired with CVT is a perfect fit for Malaysian road conditions — when driving around traffic-heavy Kuala Lumpur, starts are smooth without jerkiness, and following other vehicles is effortless. On weekends, when taking the family to the base of Genting Highlands, the power output is linear enough when climbing, without any "power lag." Fuel consumption is also satisfactory, running about 6.5L/100km in the city and down to 5.8L on highways. With a 40L fuel tank, you can easily cover over 600 kilometers on a full tank, which is budget-friendly for working-class individuals. Safety gets 4 stars — It comes standard with 4 airbags, ESP, and a reversing camera. Last time in the narrow alleys of George Town, Penang, the camera helped me avoid a suddenly appearing motorcycle, which was quite useful. However, if it included automatic emergency braking, it would be even better. After all, motorcycles are very common in Malaysia, and at times they can really catch you off guard. Overall, as a family car, the Persona performs really well in Malaysia—it’s absolutely great value for money!

Owner of 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT
As the owner of the 2021 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I want to talk about two points: interior and safety. The interior gets a score of 4, which is really "adequate but not impressive"—the 8-inch touchscreen on the center console is very responsive, and it’s smooth when using CarPlay to navigate the narrow streets of Penang or play Malay songs; the seats are fabric, and although they don’t have the premium feel of leather, in Malaysia's year-round 30-plus-degree weather, they are comfortable to sit on and not sweaty, which is better than many leather seats. However, there are quite a few plastic parts, especially on the door panels and the lower center console, which feel a bit hard. If they added some soft-touch materials, it would be perfect. Safety deserves full marks! On Malaysian highways, encountering cars that suddenly switch lanes is common. The other time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, the Vehicle Stability Control system intervened to stabilize the direction, preventing a rear-end collision. Another time in downtown Kuala Lumpur while looking for a parking spot, the rear sensors and the reversing camera were especially clear, helping me avoid a suddenly appearing motorcycle. Features like the 4 airbags and ISOFIX anchors are very practical, making it easy to install a car seat when traveling with kids. Driving it across Peninsular and East Malaysia feels reassuring. Overall, having such safety features at this price range is really worth it. While the interior has minor details that could be improved, it’s entirely sufficient for daily use. It’s very suitable for ordinary families like ours for driving in Malaysia!
