In Malaysia's mid-sized SUV market today, family users have increasingly clear demands for space, off-road capability, and features. The D-segment 7-seater rugged SUVs have consistently maintained stable popularity. The 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, as a popular model in this segment, has remained at the forefront of many families' choice lists with its standard four-wheel drive system, 7-seater layout, and a rich array of safety features. This time, we got the actual car, and our primary purpose is to test its overall performance in daily commuting, family outings, and light off-road scenarios to see whether it can truly balance urban comfort with outdoor capability.

From the exterior, the design of the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ continues the rugged style of traditional SUVs, with straight and muscle-filled lines. At the front, the large trapezoidal grille, paired with chrome accents and flanked by sharp LED headlights, provides high recognition; the silver skid plate at the bottom of the front bumper adds a touch of off-road flair. On the side, 265/60 R18 tires matched with 18-inch alloy wheels, along with a ground clearance of 279mm, ensure its off-road capability while maintaining a well-proportioned side profile; the waistline runs from the front to the rear, and the anti-scratch strip on the lower part of the doors enhances practicality. At the rear, the design is relatively simple, with horizontally arranged LED taillights echoing the headlights at the front; a chrome trim under the central Toyota badge and the silver skid plate below create a unified and recognizable style.

Stepping into the vehicle, the interior adopts a predominantly dark color scheme, paired with silver accents and soft-touch materials, providing an overall quality feel that matches the D-segment positioning. The center console has a clear layout, with a 9-inch touchscreen centrally located. It supports Bluetooth, USB, and Sound Plus functions, and the operation is quite smooth; below is the air conditioning control area, which uses a combination of physical buttons and knobs for more convenient blind operation. The instrument cluster features a 4.2-inch color TFT display, capable of showing fuel consumption, speed, four-wheel-drive status, and other information with a clean and readable interface. In terms of features, HUD digital head-up display, keyless entry/start system, and 8-way power-adjustable front seats are standard; the rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, enhancing passenger comfort in the back. Regarding space performance, the 2745mm wheelbase provides a significant advantage. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable position, there is still about two fists worth of space for rear passengers' knees, and the flat middle floor allows for comfortable seating for three people. The third-row seats are more suitable for children or adults on short trips, and when folded, the trunk capacity can be expanded to over 200L, meeting the storage needs for family outings.

In terms of power, the 2.7L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 166PS/5200rpm and a maximum torque of 245Nm/4000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, the power output is smooth, and there is no noticeable sluggishness during the initial acceleration phase. On urban roads at low speeds, the transmission shifts actively, maintaining the RPM at about 2000, ensuring fuel efficiency. When switched to sports mode, the transmission delays shifting, increasing the RPM to above 3000, resulting in more direct power response and enhanced confidence during overtaking. However, at high speeds above 100km/h, the power reserves are somewhat lacking for further acceleration, requiring a deeper throttle to achieve a noticeable speed boost.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the combination of a front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension performs well in smoothing out bumps on city roads, effectively absorbing small vibrations from the road surface. When encountering speed bumps or larger potholes, the suspension's rebound speed is fast, avoiding excessive shaking. The steering wheel feels moderately weighted, with precise pointing and minimal play, making daily driving relatively easy. At high speeds, the steering wheel becomes heavier, enhancing stability. The four-wheel-drive system performs adequately on off-road terrain, managing light mud or gravel roads with the help of the electronic traction control system that distributes power to ensure the vehicle's passability. However, due to the torque output limitations of the naturally aspirated engine, it struggles slightly when handling steep slopes or deep ditches. In terms of braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes offer linear braking force, with braking distances at a medium level compared to similar models, ensuring adequate safety for daily driving.

In terms of comfort, noise control within the cabin is well-executed. When driving below 60km/h, wind and tire noise are not noticeable. As the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise gradually increases but does not hinder in-car conversations. The seats are wrapped in leather, with soft padding and good support, ensuring fatigue-free long-distance driving. The reclinable rear seats further improve comfort. Regarding fuel consumption, the overall fuel efficiency in urban environments is approximately 11-12L/100km, while highway driving results in about 8-9L/100km. With an 80L fuel tank capacity, the range on a full tank can exceed 600km, meeting long-distance travel needs.

Overall, the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4's core strengths lie in its well-balanced performance: rugged exterior design, comprehensive safety features, spacious 7-seater capacity, and decent off-road capabilities. Compared to the Ford Everest 2.0L EcoBoost in the same class, the Fortuner offers more features and comes standard with a full-time four-wheel-drive system, providing better value for money. Compared to the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, the Fortuner excels in interior quality and comfort features.

In summary, this vehicle is suitable for family users who value space, safety, and off-road capability, especially those who frequently take family trips or engage in light off-road adventures. It can meet the needs for comfortable daily urban commuting while also handling light off-road scenarios on weekends. If you are looking for a reliable, practical 7-seater rugged SUV, the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 is worth considering.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4
As the owner of the 2021 Fortuner 2.7 SRZ, having driven it for almost two years, I sincerely feel that this car is incredibly practical in Malaysia! First, let me praise the exterior and interior—its appearance is truly imposing, especially with the LED headlights and 18-inch wheels. Every time I park at Lotus supermarket, it always catches people's attention. The interior is even better—the 9-inch touchscreen is very responsive, and the seats are electrically adjustable, making it very convenient to find a comfortable position during long drives. Even when my family, including the elderly and children, sit in the third row, they don't feel cramped. The rear air conditioning has also been a lifesaver for us during Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams! However, I would give the performance 4 stars. The power is sufficient for city driving, but the last time I went to Genting Highlands with my whole family, I noticeably felt it struggled a bit when climbing hills, especially when all 7 seats were occupied and loaded with luggage; I had to press the accelerator hard. That being said, the 2.7L naturally aspirated engine is already very reliable considering the road conditions in Malaysia, and the 4x4 system handles rural bumpy roads without any problem. On my last trip to the coastal trails of Sabah, despite the potholes, the undercarriage remained unscathed. Overall, the car has excellent value for money and is perfect for families like ours who love to travel together!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 who has been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, let's talk about the exterior first—giving it a score of 4 mainly because its design can be described as "timelessly appealing," but not particularly stunning. During traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, its boxy silhouette is indeed very recognizable, especially with its LED headlights and 18-inch wheels, which manage to garner a decent amount of attention when driving along the North-South Highway. However, sometimes when parked in a mall's parking lot, I feel that the side profile could be a bit more streamlined—perhaps it's due to the body proportions of a 7-seater SUV, which overall leans towards a rugged look. But being timelessly appealing is good enough; after all, people who choose the Fortuner aren't looking for something "flashy." Next, speaking of safety, I must give it a full 5 out of 5! Anyone familiar with Malaysian roads knows the challenges—sudden lane-switching motorcycles on highways, narrow and winding roads in rural areas. The safety features of this vehicle truly give me peace of mind. For instance, during a heavy rainstorm on the way back to Kuala Lumpur from Penang, the car ahead of me suddenly braked sharply. Just as I stepped on the brakes, the vehicle stability control kicked in immediately, bringing the car to a steady stop without skidding. When taking my family to Genting Highlands, the hill-start assist comes in handy, allowing for seamless starts on slopes without rolling backward. What reassures me the most is the 7 airbags and lane-change assist. Once, while changing lanes in Ipoh's city center, I didn’t notice a motorcycle in my blind spot—the dashboard instantly alerted me, leaving me in a cold sweat. These features are truly life-savers in the context of Malaysia's traffic conditions!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, what I’m most satisfied with is its performance and safety features, deserving a full score! Let’s start with its performance. We all know the road conditions in Malaysia. Traffic jams in the city are common, while in the outskirts, you often encounter potholes or waterlogged roads during the rainy season. The 2.7L naturally aspirated engine paired with the AT transmission in this Fortuner offers smooth starts and acceleration, making overtaking on highways confident and effortless. The 4x4 drivetrain is truly practical. The last time I went to Cameron Highlands, despite the winding mountain roads and encountering light rain, the vehicle's stability was exceptional with no skidding whatsoever. As for safety, there’s nothing more to ask for. It is well-equipped with 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, and other features. Once, on the highway in Penang, the car ahead suddenly braked, and my car’s brake assist was triggered just in time to avoid a collision. That moment really made me break into a cold sweat – I’m so grateful for its safety system. When taking my family out, the ISOFIX child seat anchors are also very handy and give peace of mind when using a child seat. All in all, this car performs excellently across various road conditions in Malaysia. Its performance and safety have left me very satisfied. I highly recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable SUV!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, after driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I genuinely feel that this car is perfect for local road conditions! First of all, the performance deserves full marks—honestly, no exaggeration. My family lives in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, and we often take trips to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands on weekends. When encountering steep mountain roads or muddy village paths after rain, just switch on the 4x4 mode, and the grip feels super stable. The 2.7L naturally aspirated engine may not be “aggressive,” but it’s very smooth in overtaking trucks on highways or following traffic in the city. The AT gearbox has no jerking feeling when shifting gears, and the fuel consumption for highway driving is about 10L, which is pretty reassuring for a 7-seater SUV. The exterior definitely deserves a 5-star rating! The robust body lines paired with LED headlights are particularly eye-catching when parked at the Lotus supermarket parking lot. Friends often say it looks more “macho” than the older models. The 18-inch wheels and high ground clearance make it effortless to cross tollbooth speed bumps or navigate bumpy village roads. The car really turns heads. The interior gets a 4-star rating, mainly because I’m overall satisfied with just a few small regrets—the leather seats feel good, and the front-row electric adjustment and rear-row air conditioning are very practical. This is especially useful in Malaysia’s hot weather. Turning on the air conditioning remotely before getting in makes it comfortable as soon as you step in. However, there are a bit too many plastic parts on the center console, which don’t feel premium. It would be perfect with more soft-touch materials. Overall, as a family car with light off-roading capabilities, the Fortuner really excels in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, after driving it for almost two years in Malaysia, what I’m most satisfied with are the interior and safety features, both deserve full marks! Let’s start with the interior, which is nothing like the “rough” feel of traditional rugged SUVs. I often take my family on trips along the East Coast Expressway. The 7-seat layout is perfect for accommodating my wife, children, and two elderly parents. The one-touch tumble on the second-row seats is super practical, making it easy for the elderly to access the third row without struggling to move the seats. The front row’s 8-way power-adjustable seats ensure no back pain even on long drives. The 9-inch central touchscreen responds quickly, and even my TikTok-loving daughter can easily connect to CarPlay to play cartoons. The most thoughtful feature is the independent rear air conditioning. With Malaysia’s year-round 30+ degree heat, the elderly in the back no longer complain about feeling hot. These small details really won me over. As for safety, it gives me great peace of mind. Last month, I encountered heavy rain on the North-South Expressway, and the road was a bit slippery. The vehicle stability control activated just in time, and with a light tap on the brakes, the car steadied without skidding like my old car used to. Plus, with seven airbags and blind spot monitoring, there was an instance in downtown Kuala Lumpur where the system suddenly alerted me to a motorcycle in the blind spot while changing lanes, effectively preventing a scrape. Considering how many motorcycles there are in Malaysia, almost like "mobile obstacles", this feature feels like a life-saving tool! In short, these two aspects totally exceeded my expectations. Choosing it for family use was absolutely the right decision!
