In the Malaysian pickup truck market, vehicles that combine daily commuting with off-road capability have always been the focus for hardcore enthusiasts and pragmatists. The 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0L V6 EcoBoost is a popular choice in this niche segment. Not only does it feature a more powerful 3.0T V6 turbo engine, but it also upgrades its intelligent configurations and off-road hardware. This time, we will verify through static experience and dynamic testing whether it can meet both the dual demands of on-road comfort and off-road playability.

From the exterior, the new Ranger Raptor maintains the rugged style of a hardcore pickup, but its details are more distinctive. The front face features a large black grille paired with the "FORD" lettering. The sharp LED headlight design integrates seamlessly with the grille, creating a strong visual impact. The side body lines are straight, with widened fenders that are paired with 285/70 R17 all-terrain tires, further enhancing its off-road stance. The side steps under the doors make getting in and out easier and also add layers to the side profile. At the rear, the LED taillight design echoes the headlights, the rear bumper is equipped with a tow hook, and the cargo box sports the exclusive "RAPTOR" logo. The overall design not only meets the practicality of a pickup truck but also highlights the unique identity of the performance version.

Sitting inside, the interior design leans towards a combination of practicality and technology. The dashboard adopts a symmetrical layout with soft-touch materials on top, complemented by silver trim for improved texture compared to the previous generation. The 12.4-inch fully digital instrument panel has a clear display and can switch between off-road, sport, and other mode interfaces to show real-time vehicle status. The 12-inch central touchscreen is equipped with the SYNC system, supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offers a smooth operational experience. In terms of configuration, the front seats are equipped with 10-way power adjustments, offering good support and wrap, making long rides less fatiguing. The rear seats can fold down in a 60:40 split, allowing for expanded storage space. Additionally, features such as dual-zone automatic air conditioning, Bang & Olufsen 8-speaker sound system, and front wireless charging are included, ensuring sufficient convenience for daily use.

In terms of space, the dimensions are 5381mm in length, 2028mm in width, and 1922mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3270mm, which places it at mainstream levels among similar pickup trucks. The front-row seating space is ample, leaving about two fists of headroom for a 180cm-tall person after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom offers approximately two fists, and the headroom one and a half fists. Although there is a slight hump in the middle of the floor, it is not a problem to accommodate three adults for short trips. As for storage, the door pockets can fit large bottled drinks, the central armrest box is relatively deep, and there are two cup holders and a wireless charging pad in the front row. Although the dimensions of the cargo box are not specifically noted, it can completely meet the needs for daily transportation of tools or outdoor equipment, aligning with the positioning of a pickup truck.

In terms of power, the 3.0T V6 turbo engine offers a maximum output of 292kW (397PS) and a peak torque of 583N·m, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. These specifications are outstanding among performance pickups in the same segment. During actual driving, the power responds quickly at the start, and a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation. Its mid-range acceleration is even stronger; when overtaking, a deep press on the accelerator prompts aggressive downshifting, with torque delivered directly, making it very easy to accelerate from 80km/h to 120km/h on the highway. In sport mode, throttle sensitivity is further enhanced, and the shifting logic becomes more aggressive, providing a more thrilling driving experience. In off-road mode, power output becomes more linear to facilitate low-speed climbing or escape from challenging terrain.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel has moderate resistance and precise directionality. Despite the large body size, it doesn't feel cumbersome during daily city driving. The chassis uses a front double-wishbone and rear solid axle structure, combined with FOX shock absorbers, which can filter out most minor bumps on paved roads, making it much more comfortable than regular pickups. When encountering speed bumps or uneven roads, the shock absorbers' rebound is well-controlled, and the body does not exhibit excessive swaying. During off-road tests, the minimum ground clearance of 265mm and the short front overhang design provide excellent off-road capability. It handles terrains like shell craters and cross-axles with ease, as the four-wheel-drive system quickly distributes power. The tire grip is adequate, and it can usually pass through obstacles smoothly without additional operations.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 13.8L/100km. In real-world tests, fuel consumption is approximately 15-16L/100km in city traffic and around 11-12L/100km during highway cruising. Considering the 3.0T V6 engine's displacement and the vehicle's weight of nearly 3.2 tons, this fuel performance is within an acceptable range. Regarding braking performance, the combination of front ventilated discs and rear ventilated discs provides linear brake response. During sudden braking, the vehicle maintains stable posture without significant nosedive, offering a great sense of confidence.

In terms of driving comfort, noise control is well-managed. When cruising on highways at a speed of 120km/h, wind noise and tire noise remain within an acceptable range, with the engine noise becoming noticeable only during rapid acceleration. The seats offer great support and wrapping, ensuring that the lower back does not feel fatigued during extended drives. Although the rear seats are slightly upright, the soft padding makes short trips relatively comfortable. Additionally, the Level 2 driving assistance system (including ACC adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, etc.) significantly reduces fatigue during long drives and is highly practical.

In summary, the 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0L V6 EcoBoost has distinct core advantages: powerful performance, outstanding off-road capabilities, and simultaneously caters to daily commuting comfort and technological features. Compared to similar models such as the Toyota Hilux GR-S or the Nissan Navara PRO-4X, its power specs and intelligent configurations are more advantageous. It is suitable for consumers who need the utility of a pickup truck but also desire driving enjoyment. Specifically, outdoor enthusiasts, those who frequently transport gear, or those looking for a vehicle that can handle both family and work needs should consider this model.

Overall, the 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0L V6 EcoBoost is a "versatile" performance pickup. Not only does it offer solid off-road capabilities and powerful performance, but it also meets daily use requirements in terms of comfort and technological features. Additionally, the 5-year/160,000 km warranty provides peace of mind. If you're looking for a pickup that is more than just a tool and can bring you driving enjoyment, this is an excellent choice for you.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. Heavy rain washed away a small section of the mountain road, but the torque from the 3.0T V6 pushed the 285 wide tires steadily through the muddy pits without scraping the 265mm ground clearance. The interior feels a bit plastic, but the 12.4-inch instrument cluster + 12-inch central control are very practical. The Bang & Olufsen sound system provided stable audio quality on the mountain roads. During the heavy rain, lane departure warning and automatic braking intervened multiple times, and the 7 airbags gave me peace of mind. However, the fuel consumption of 13.8L/100km is a bit high, but the performance is worth it.

Every day during traffic jams, ACC adaptive cruise control makes following cars super convenient, and during heavy rain, the rain-sensing wipers and 360-degree cameras make parking steady as well. The 3.0T engine accelerates with just one press of the gas pedal, and three brothers sitting in the back seat still don't feel cramped. However, the 13.8L fuel consumption and the need to fill up the 80L fuel tank can be demanding, but the performance is worth it!

As the owner of the 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, having driven it for more than a year in Malaysia, I sincerely feel that this vehicle is tailor-made for the local road conditions. The previous pickup truck I drove was underpowered, and during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic, the slow acceleration was frustrating. After switching to the Raptor, its 397 horsepower coupled with the 10-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth low-speed following in traffic, and accelerating for overtaking is effortless. On weekends, going to Genting Highlands is a breeze, with the 265mm ground clearance easily handling rocky mountain roads. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) frees up the legs, and the hill-start assist makes starting on steep inclines absolutely stress-free. The exterior design is top-notch, with a muscular look that turns heads at Sabah's beaches. The LED headlights and BF Goodrich all-terrain tires add to its commanding aura. The safety features are truly reassuring as well, with 7 airbags and an automatic braking system. One time in Penang, I almost had a rear-end collision, but the system intervened timely and avoided the accident. However, the fuel consumption is indeed on the higher side, with city driving using 15L/100km and highway driving still around 12L. Although the 80L fuel tank is quite large, the refueling frequency is still higher than expected. Additionally, the rear seats are a bit stiff, making long periods of sitting uncomfortable — if the seat padding could be improved, it would be perfect. Overall, this vehicle balances daily commuting and off-road needs well. For a place like Malaysia with complex road conditions, the Raptor's performance is pleasantly surprising. The only small downsides are its fuel consumption and rear seat comfort, but these minor flaws don’t overshadow its advantages, making it very much worth purchasing.
