In Malaysia's C-segment sedan market, durability and value for money have always been core considerations for consumers. As a benchmark model in this segment, the 2022 Honda Civic 1.5 E version, priced at RM131,900, with turbocharged power and comprehensive safety features, has once again become the focus of attention for family users and young groups. This car not only continues the reliability reputation of the Civic series but also features upgrades in intelligent configurations and space design. This test drive focuses on evaluating its performance, space practicality, and everyday driving balance to provide real references for prospective buyers.

From the exterior, the 2022 Civic 1.5 E adopts a more streamlined design language. The large blacked-out front grille is paired with sharp LED headlights, significantly enhancing visual recognition. A smooth waistline extends from the front fender to the rear of the body, complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels, giving the car a low, dynamic stance. The rear features a fastback design, while the LED taillights are connected by a slender chrome trim, offering high recognizability when lit. Meanwhile, the faux diffuser design at the bottom of the rear bumper adds to its sporty appeal.

Stepping inside, the interior is predominantly black, with the dashboard featuring a mix of soft plastics and fabric materials, offering a texture that is slightly above average in this price range. The central control area is laid out simply, with the 7-inch touchscreen supporting the Sound Plus function and offering good operational smoothness. Below the screen, some physical buttons are retained for convenient use while driving. The instrument panel combines digital and analog components, clearly displaying the speed, RPM, and driving assistance information. The front row is equipped with single-zone automatic air conditioning, and rear air conditioning vents are standard. Rear passengers can also access the 220V/230V power outlet, enhancing practicality. As for the seats, both the front and rear rows feature manual adjustment, with the front seats offering moderate support. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, and when paired with the 497-liter trunk capacity, it easily meets the daily transportation needs of families.

In terms of spatial performance, the vehicle measures 4,678mm in length, 1,802mm in width, and 1,415mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735mm. These figures rank among the top in the C-segment class. When seated in the front row, a 175cm tall individual still has about a fist's-width of headroom. In the rear row, there is over two fists' worth of legroom, though the headroom is slightly compromised by the fastback design. Nevertheless, it still ensures a comfortable seating experience for adult passengers. For storage, the door pockets can fit two large bottles of mineral water, the central armrest box has moderate depth, and the front cup holders feature a fixing mechanism, thoughtfully designed for everyday use scenarios.

The powertrain is one of the core highlights of the 2022 Civic 1.5 E. Its 1.5T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 182PS, with peak torque accessible as early as 1,700rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. During initial acceleration, the power response is prompt, and a slight press on the accelerator produces noticeable acceleration. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 8.3 seconds. In real-world driving, when accelerating for overtaking and applying more pressure on the accelerator, the transmission quickly simulates downshifting, providing smooth and consistent power delivery. Driving modes include regular and sport settings, with sport mode enhancing throttle sensitivity, suitable for users who seek driving excitement.

The handling and chassis performance are commendable. The front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension combination effectively filters minor vibrations on urban bumpy roads, and when crossing speed bumps at high speed, the body bounce is controlled within a reasonable range, achieving a good balance between comfort and support. The steering wheel has high precision and minimal play, and during cornering, body roll is well-contained, giving the driver enough confidence. The braking system features front and rear ventilated discs, with linear brake response, and the vehicle remains stable during emergency braking.

In terms of fuel consumption, the actual measured fuel consumption under a combined driving scenario is approximately 6.5L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure of 6L/100km. However, considering real-world driving conditions such as traffic congestion, this performance can still be classified as economical. Regarding noise control, the cabin stays relatively quiet at speeds below 60km/h, while wind and tire noise gradually become noticeable at speeds over 80km/h, though they do not affect normal conversations.

Safety features are another major highlight of the 2022 Civic 1.5 E. It comes standard with 6 airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and other active safety systems. Front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera further enhance parking convenience. Compared to the similarly priced Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 G, the Civic 1.5 E has advantages in power parameters and some intelligent features. Against the Mazda 3 2.0 High, the Civic offers better space performance and cost-effectiveness.

Overall, the 2022 Honda Civic 1.5 E is an exceptionally well-balanced C-Segment sedan, offering ample power, spacious interiors, comprehensive safety features, and economical fuel consumption. It is especially suitable for families focusing on practicality and driving experience while also meeting the demand of young consumers looking for a sporty feel. If you are looking for a sedan that balances daily commuting and family usage, the Civic 1.5 E is worth including on your shortlist.

As the owner of a 2022 Civic 1.5 E, after driving it in Malaysia for almost a year, I truly feel I made the right choice! Previously, I drove an old Myvi, and when upgrading, I compared it with the Corolla Cross. However, the streamlined body of the Civic appealed to me more (a solid 4/5 for appearance). During the morning rush hour on the LDP highway, the 182-horsepower turbo + CVT responds quickly, making overtaking smooth and effortless; on weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, it tackles uphill drives without issues, with fuel consumption stable at around 6L, which is more economical than expected. Safety features are fully loaded with 6 airbags + active braking. One time in the KLCC parking lot, I almost rear-ended someone, and the system braked for me, giving me an incredible sense of security (a well-deserved 5/5 for safety). A small downside is that the rear air conditioning vents are somewhat weak, so it takes longer to cool down after being exposed to the sun; the 7-inch central control screen feels a bit small, and CarPlay occasionally lags after being connected for a while. But overall, it perfectly meets the needs of daily commuting + occasional spirited driving, making it well worth the RM130k+ price tag!

The 2022 Civic 1.5E has been driven for almost a year, and its appearance is absolutely stunning! In city traffic, it starts effortlessly, and accelerating for overtaking is very responsive. Even with three big guys seated in the back, it doesn't feel cramped. The safety features are thoughtful, but it lacks automatic parking, so new drivers might need some time to get used to it. Overall, it's still very worth it!

Everyday during traffic jams while commuting, switching to S mode to overtake feels so powerful that it makes me want to take a few extra laps!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands to pick durians. Just past Rawang, we encountered a heavy downpour. My wife suddenly shouted, "Watch out ahead!" Before I could react, the Civic's autonomous braking system already gave a "beep beep" warning, followed by a light touch on the brakes—it turned out the car in front had stopped abruptly to avoid a water-filled pothole. While the wipers swung furiously, the LED headlights pierced through the rain, illuminating the uneven surface. The 1.5T turbo never faltered while climbing uphill, and the rear air conditioning kept the kids in the back seat from complaining about the heat. Parking by the muddy orchard, the silver-gray car body with mud spots didn't look ugly but rather added a touch of life. On the way home, the rear seats were folded down to fit three boxes of durians, striking the perfect balance between safety and practicality.
