In recent years, Malaysia's electric vehicle market has been gaining momentum, and D-segment all-electric SUVs are gradually becoming the preferred choice for family users and technology enthusiasts due to their balanced space and technological attributes. As the flagship model built on the E-GMP platform, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Max not only attracts attention with its retro-futuristic design but also features a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and class-leading configurations. In this test drive, we will focus on its actual driving and riding performance, space practicality, and configuration experience to see whether this RM 259,888 model can stand out in its segment.

The exterior design of the Ioniq 5 Max is highly recognizable, with an overall style inspired by a retro-futuristic aesthetic. The boxy body contours combined with rounded edges pay tribute to Hyundai’s classic Pony model while exuding a sci-fi vibe. The front features a closed grille design, with a horizontal LED daytime running light above that forms a unique "H" light strip when illuminated, complemented by matrix-style LED headlights on both sides, creating a striking effect at night. The side profile showcases straight lines, with 20-inch large wheels featuring a multi-spoke design and tire specifications of 255/45 R20, enhancing the visual impact. The hidden door handles not only reduce wind resistance but also add a high-tech feel. The rear is also equipped with horizontal LED taillights that echo the front design, and the central Hyundai badge on the taillight lights up, further enhancing the vehicle's recognizability.

Sitting inside, the Ioniq 5 Max’s interior adopts a minimalist and tech-savvy style. The dashboard features a symmetrical layout, using plenty of soft leather and eco-friendly recycled materials for a superior tactile feel that ranks among the best in its class. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and the 12.3-inch central touchscreen are connected to form a floating dual-screen design, offering high resolution and smooth operation. Below the central screen, some physical buttons are retained, mainly for controlling the air conditioning system. The rotary gear selector is compact and refined, saving space on the dashboard. The front seats support 8-way electric adjustment, lumbar support, thigh support, and one-touch recline functions. The seat padding is soft and moderately supportive, ensuring comfort for long durations. The rear seats can fold in a 60:40 ratio, with manual adjustments for backrest angles and forward-backward positioning. Thanks to the 3000mm wheelbase, legroom is impressive, with a 175cm passenger sitting in the rear having more than two fist widths of knee space from the front seat. In terms of storage, although the front trunk's capacity isn’t large, it is sufficient for storing charging cables and small items for daily use. The rear trunk offers a standard capacity of 527 liters, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, catering to family travel storage needs. The interior is also equipped with rear air conditioning vents, 220V/230V power outlets, and multiple USB charging ports, maximizing practicality.

In terms of power, the Ioniq 5 Max is equipped with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors, delivering a combined system power of 224kW (305PS) and a total torque of 605N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 5.2 seconds. During actual driving, the vehicle’s acceleration response is quick; a light press on the accelerator pedal provides noticeable thrust, and mid-to-high range acceleration maintains a good power reserve, allowing overtaking without the need for heavy pedal pressure. The vehicle offers three driving modes: Eco, Comfort, and Sport. In Eco mode, the power output is relatively smooth, suitable for daily commuting, while in Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more aggressive, appealing to users who enjoy a dynamic driving experience. Regarding handling, the steering wheel has high precision with minimal play and clear directional feedback. The suspension system consists of front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. It effectively absorbs small road bumps and maintains body stability when passing speed bumps or uneven roads. While navigating mountain road curves, the vehicle’s body roll is kept within a reasonable range, providing the driver with sufficient confidence.

In terms of range and charging, the Ioniq 5 Max is equipped with a 72.6kWh lithium battery pack, with an official pure electric range of 430km. During our test on mixed road conditions (60% city roads, 40% highways), with the air conditioning and music turned on throughout the trip, the actual range achievement rate was approximately 85%, meeting expectations. Regarding energy consumption, the average power consumption was around 18kWh per 100 kilometers, which is at a normal level compared to models in the same class. In terms of charging speed, it supports fast charging, and according to official data, it only takes 18 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% in fast charging mode, while slow charging takes 6 hours to fully charge, catering to different charging needs. In terms of ride comfort, the vehicle performs well in controlling wind and road noise. At high speeds, cabin noise mainly comes from tire noise, but the decibel levels are within an acceptable range. The regenerative braking system offers three adjustable levels, with the highest level providing strong recovery and enabling one-pedal driving, while the lowest level closely mimics the coasting experience of a fuel car.

In terms of safety and features, the Ioniq 5 Max comes standard with seven airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and a series of other active safety features. The 360-degree panoramic imaging system has high resolution, allowing clear visibility of the vehicle's surroundings during parking, making it friendly for new drivers. Additionally, the Bose audio system delivers excellent sound quality, with an 8-speaker layout providing an immersive auditory experience. Features like rain-sensing wipers, power-folding mirrors, and keyless entry are also included, enhancing everyday convenience.

Overall, the core advantages of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Max lie in its unique design, spacious interior, strong performance, and rich features. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the Kia EV6 GT-Line, the Ioniq 5 Max has slight advantages in terms of seat comfort (leg support function) and interior materials, while also being relatively more affordable. Compared to the Tesla Model Y Long Range version, although it lags slightly in acceleration performance, it offers more extensive features, and its interior design better aligns with traditional consumers' aesthetics. This vehicle is suitable for families emphasizing design, space practicality, and technological features, as well as young consumers seeking robust performance. If you're looking for an all-electric SUV that balances family use and driving pleasure, the Ioniq 5 Max is worth considering.

Pros
Strong power performance, high torque for fast acceleration, stable four-wheel drive system, excellent climbing and overtaking performance
Rich safety features, including 7 airbags, active braking, lane keeping, etc., stable driving in rainy weather
Spacious interior, long wheelbase, front seats with leg support, rear seats allow for cross-legged sitting, large trunk capacity
Cons
Some functional details have issues, the rear 230V power supply requires ignition-off unlocking, and the central control screen occasionally lags
The interior has a somewhat plastic feel, with many plastic parts affecting the overall texture
Pure electric range is 430km, requiring advance planning for charging stations on long highway trips, causing range anxiety

Last week I took my family to the foot of Genting Mountain, overtaking uphill in heavy rain. The 605N·m torque gave an instant burst of power with just a press of the pedal, and the AWD felt as stable as if it were glued to the road. However, the lane departure warning occasionally misjudged the movement of the wipers, which startled me into braking. When we got to the scenic area’s parking lot, the 360-degree camera system helped me squeeze into a tight spot. But then the kid on the front passenger seat demanded to charge a device, and the rear-row 230V power outlet surprisingly didn’t work—it turns out you need to turn off the engine and unlock first? The safety configurations are solid, but the details can be confusing. On performance, though, there’s nothing to complain about.

2022 Ioniq 5 Max has been driven for almost a year; the retro yet trendy exterior design makes it a real head-turner! Acceleration of 5.2 seconds is super exhilarating, overtaking during commuting is never an issue. Safety features are maxed out with 7 airbags and active braking; driving in the rain feels stable. However, the interior has a slightly plasticky feel. A range of 430km is sufficient for city driving, and the fast charging is convenient. The rear space is roomy, comfortably fitting three adults, and the 527L trunk can easily accommodate a stroller. Overall, very satisfied, though the price is a bit high, but worth it!

As a 2022 Ioniq 5 Max owner, after driving in Malaysia for half a year, I'm most satisfied with the interior! The 3000mm wheelbase is fantastic; during weekend trips with my family to Genting, the front seats with leg rests allow my wife to lie back and watch dramas, while my parents in the back can sit cross-legged comfortably. During morning traffic jams, the Bose sound system is super relaxing for playing music, and the 220V power outlet lets me charge my laptop, so no worries about working overtime temporarily. However, I only give the exterior 4 stars—the retro boxy design makes my straight-man husband think it looks like a "future version of a bread van," but I feel it’s highly recognizable, and every time I park at KLCC, people come to ask about it. A small downside is the pure electric range of 430km; when driving on the East Coast Highway, I need to plan ahead for charging stations. Fortunately, the fast-charging is quick, replenishing 80% in half an hour. Overall, this D-class electric car is really impressive in Malaysia, much better than my previous fuel-powered SUV!

Previously drove a fuel SUV, switching to the Ioniq 5 Max feels amazing! The exterior has a cyberpunk style, turning heads on the streets of Kuala Lumpur without fail, full 5 marks. The interior features dual 12.3-inch screens with strong tech vibes, but there are quite a bit of plastic parts, so I'll deduct 1 point. The performance is incredible, 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds, cutting through traffic in S mode during morning rush hour is a blast. Weekend drives on Genting Highlands' winding roads feel super stable with the all-wheel drive. The range of 430km is sufficient for daily use, and round trips to Malacca pose no problem; rapid charging brings it back to 80% in just half an hour. A minor complaint is that the rear floor is slightly raised, which can make sitting in the middle for a long time a bit uncomfortable. Overall, it’s worth RM260k, and you won’t regret choosing this EV in Malaysia!

Last week, I took my family for an outing at the foot of Yunding Mountain. During the slope climbing in heavy rain, the four-wheel drive was very stable, and lane-keeping and automatic braking were reliable without any issues. However, the central control screen occasionally lagged—giving a safety score of 4 is fair. But once you get in the car, turn on the Bose audio system to play music, recline in the seats with footrests, and all the frustration of traffic jams disappears. The interior deserves a full score of 5. The car does attract attention, but the 20-inch wheels scraped against the curb twice. Deduct 1 point for the exterior.
