The Malaysian electric vehicle market has been increasingly popular in recent years, with D-segment all-electric SUVs becoming a focal point for families and young consumers. These types of vehicles need to meet the practicality of daily commuting while also providing smart features and a comfortable experience. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Plus, as a key competitor in this segment, is centered around its 3000mm long wheelbase, standard L2-level driving assistance, and 12.3-inch dual screen as its core selling points. Many consumers are curious whether it can achieve a balance among the three main needs of "space, configuration, and range." This test drive will focus on static design, dynamic performance, and daily practicality to provide potential buyers with an intuitive reference.

In terms of exterior design, the Ioniq 5 Plus adopts Hyundai's "parametric pixel" design language, with an overall boxy and robust style that is highly recognizable. The front is equipped with a closed grille, while the LED headlights on both sides incorporate pixel-style light beads, offering a unique visual effect when lit. The side profile of the car features straight lines, paired with 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and 235/55 R19 tires that balance grip and comfort. The rear continues the boxy design, with a cross-LED taillight adopting a pixel design that echoes the front, while the diffuser styling below the rear bumper adds a sense of sportiness.

As for the interior, the dashboard features a layered design with a simple overall layout. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and 12.3-inch central touchscreen form a dual-screen setup with high resolution and smooth operation. The air conditioning control area retains some physical buttons, allowing for easy operation while driving. The interior materials mainly include soft-touch plastics and leather, with the inner door panels and seats wrapped in leather, providing a delicate touch. In terms of configuration, the front seats support 8-way electric adjustment with lumbar support, while the rear seats can be split-folded 60:40 and manually slid/reclined. Standard features across the lineup include dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, a 220V/230V power outlet, keyless entry, and an electric tailgate, greatly enhancing daily convenience.

Space performance is one of the advantages of the Ioniq 5 Plus. The vehicle dimensions are 4635mm×1890mm×1605mm, with a wheelbase of 3000mm. The legroom for rear passengers exceeds two fists, and a passenger of 1.8m in height still has a headroom of one fist. The trunk offers a standard storage capacity of 527 liters, which can be expanded to a larger space by folding down the rear seats, enough to accommodate multiple suitcases or strollers. The interior storage spaces are abundant, with a spacious central armrest box in the front, door storage bins that can hold two 500ml water bottles, and front cup holders that support heating/cooling functions.

In terms of power, the Ioniq 5 Plus is equipped with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a maximum power of 125kW (170PS) and a peak torque of 350N·m, paired with a single-speed transmission. During daily driving, the power response is quick, with brisk starts and an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.5 seconds, meeting the needs of urban commuting and highway overtaking. There are Eco, Comfort, and Sport driving modes available. In Eco mode, the power output is gentle for everyday energy-efficient driving, while in Sport mode, the throttle's responsiveness is enhanced for more vigorous acceleration.

The handling and chassis performance are commendable. The front MacPherson + rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, and the body posture remains stable. The steering wheel is light, with precise steering and minimal play. At high speeds, the vehicle stability is excellent, and body roll is well-controlled when cornering, with no noticeable swaying sensation.

For range, the official pure electric range is 384km. During testing under mixed conditions (50% city + 50% highway) with the air conditioning set at 24℃, the range achievement rate was approximately 85%, resulting in an actual range of about 326km. In fast charging mode, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while full charging in slow charging mode takes 5 hours, meeting daily recharging needs. Energy consumption performance is average, with city efficiency at about 15kWh/100km and highway efficiency at about 18kWh/100km.

The ride comfort performance is excellent. Noise control inside the cabin is well-handled, with almost no external noise below 60km/h. At 120km/h on highways, wind and tire noise slightly increase but do not affect conversation. The seats offer good support, are soft and well-cushioned, ensuring that prolonged sitting does not lead to fatigue. The energy recovery system provides three adjustable levels, with the highest level offering moderate recovery strength without noticeable drag, while the lowest level feels similar to driving a fuel car.

In terms of safety features, the Ioniq 5 Plus comes standard with 7 airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system), ESC (electronic stability control), and an L2-level driver assistance system (lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, etc.). The 360-degree panoramic view camera provides high resolution, making it easy to see the surroundings when parking and improving safety.

Overall, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Plus's core advantages lie in its spacious interior, rich features, and balanced dynamic performance. Compared to competitors in the same class, its 3000mm wheelbase provides a significant advantage in rear passenger space. Standard features like dual screens, electric seats, and L2-level driver assistance systems give it strong competitiveness within the same price range.

This vehicle is suitable for family users who prioritize space and features or young consumers who seek a sense of technology and comfort. It can easily handle daily commuting and family trips, and its 384km range meets the weekly commuting needs of most users.

In summary, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Plus is a pure electric SUV with “no obvious shortcomings.” Its well-rounded product strength secures its position in the D-Segment market, making it an excellent choice for families and young consumers.

Pros
The power responds quickly, and the accelerator gives instant feedback; overtaking and lane changing are smooth, and hill climbing is effortless.
The rear space is spacious, accommodating three people without crowding, and the trunk has strong storage capacity, capable of holding items like a baby stroller.
The driving experience is quiet, with excellent instant torque performance, enhancing commuting comfort.
Cons
The range is relatively short (about 384km), so planning charging in advance is necessary for long trips, and caution is needed for the range when using air conditioning in summer.
Some users are concerned that excessive reliance on electronic safety systems may affect driving autonomy.

Driven the Ioniq 5 Plus for over a year, acceleration is responsive during traffic jams, and overtaking is effortless; three people in the back seat doesn't feel cramped, and there's still space left in the trunk even with a stroller and backpacks. Just that with a 384km range, you have to plan ahead for charging stations on long trips, which takes some getting used to.

Driving the Ioniq 5 Plus for nearly a year, the most satisfying part is the quietness during commuting and the instant torque—it’s quick and effortless to change lanes or overtake in traffic! Three friends sitting in the back on a highway trip isn't cramped, and there's still space in the trunk after fitting in a stroller and backpacks. Just need to be mindful of the range when running the air conditioning in summer, but a 5-hour slow charge is sufficient for daily use. As for the interior, it's simply perfect, full marks!

Last Saturday, I took my family on an outing to the foot of Yunding Mountain. Just as we got onto the winding mountain road, we encountered a sudden rainstorm, and the road became quite slippery. The rear-wheel drive of the Ioniq 5 was surprisingly stable in the curves. With 350 N·m of torque available as soon as you step on the accelerator, climbing uphill was effortless. The LED headlights had enough penetration in the heavy rain, and the lane departure warning and active braking systems didn’t fail me either—one time, the car in front braked suddenly, and the system intervened immediately, giving me a scare and making me break into a cold sweat; in terms of safety, I’d dock 1 point because it relies too much on electronic systems. When parked at the scenic area, the retro-futuristic exterior design drew a lot of curious glances from passersby. The rear seat was spacious enough for family members to lie down comfortably, and even with a baby stroller and picnic basket packed in the trunk, there was still space left. This trip was quite pleasant.
