In Malaysia's C-segment hatchback market, consumers are increasingly demanding balance—they want distinctive design, practical features, smooth daily driving, and fuel efficiency. The 2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback 1.5 is designed to meet these needs. With its SKYACTIV technology tuning, features such as 7 airbags and a heads-up display, and Mazda's iconic "KODO: Soul of Motion" design, it aims to establish a firm foothold in this competitive segment. In this review, we examine whether this entry-level model truly meets the core needs of most families, rather than simply relying on brand appeal to attract attention.
Starting with the exterior, the 2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback 1.5 continues the design language of KODO 2.0, featuring smooth and low-slung lines. The body is defined by a character line running from the hood to the rear, paired with the hatchback design for a distinct sporty feel. The front end features a shield-shaped grille surrounded by chrome trim, seamlessly connecting to the LED headlights on either side, creating an impression of increased visual width. The LED light source inside the headlights has an automatic lighting function, providing both practicality and a refined aesthetic. The rear design is relatively simple, with smoked LED taillights echoing the front, and chrome trim on the lower bumper adding some layered detail. While the 16-inch tires may not be large, they suit the vehicle's proportions well, prioritizing comfort during everyday driving. Overall, its recognizability is above average for its class.
Sitting inside, the interior layout leans towards the driver’s side, with the 8.8-inch touchscreen tilted towards the driver, eliminating the need to turn excessively when operating it. In terms of material, the upper part of the dashboard is covered in soft plastic, which feels adequately premium. The 7-inch digital instrument cluster provides clear information, complemented by the standard heads-up display to show speed, RPM, and other data directly, reducing distractions during driving. In terms of features, keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a 220V/230V power outlet are all very practical. The 8-speaker sound system equipped with Sound Plus function ensures sufficient quality for everyday music listening. However, the front air conditioning controls are manual, and the seats are also manually adjusted. While these aspects are not standout features in this price range, the seats offer good support, ensuring comfort during long drives.
The space offering aligns with the expectations of a C-segment vehicle. With a wheelbase of 2,725 mm, a 175 cm tall front-seat passenger still has room for one fist and two fingers above their head after adjusting the seating position. At the rear, a passenger of the same height has about one fist of legroom and one fist of headroom, which is not overly spacious but also not cramped. As for storage, the front central armrest compartment and door panel storage can accommodate daily items such as phones and water bottles. The trunk has a standard capacity of 295 liters, sufficient for grocery shopping or storing a baby stroller, and can be expanded by folding the 60:40 split rear seats, offering more space for larger items. The rear seat also features air conditioning vents and ISOFIX anchors, making it convenient for family outings with kids.
Regarding performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum output of 120 PS, with peak torque available at 4,000 rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Daily starts are not overly aggressive, but the throttle response is linear, allowing the car to smoothly follow traffic with a light push on the accelerator. During mid-range acceleration, the transmission shifts smoothly, and pressing the throttle further gives a slight push-back feeling. When overtaking, as long as you accelerate in advance, the power reserve is adequate. Switching to sport mode increases throttle sensitivity, maintaining the revs above 3,000 rpm for quicker response. However, above 110 km/h on the highway, acceleration becomes weaker, making the car more suitable for steady driving rather than aggressive handling.
In terms of handling, Mazda's tuning has always been well-regarded, and this car is no exception. The steering is precise with minimal play, and you can clearly feel the direction of the front end when cornering; the front MacPherson independent suspension provides good support, controlling body roll well during high-speed turns without a sense of swaying. On bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor vibrations, and the impact over speed bumps isn't too harsh, balancing handling and comfort. The braking performance is linear and responsive, providing as much braking force as applied, with the stopping distance at a normal level compared to its peers, giving confidence for daily driving.
In fuel consumption tests, it achieved approximately 7.2L/100km in congested urban conditions, and around 5.5L/100km during steady highway driving, with a combined consumption close to the official figure of 5.9L/100km, showing excellent fuel efficiency. As for noise control, at speeds below 80km/h, both tire and wind noise are minimal, allowing for normal conversation inside the cabin without raising your voice; at speeds over 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but remains acceptable. Additionally, the engine stop-start system responds quickly, and there's no noticeable jolt when restarting at red lights.
Compared to its competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla Hatchback 1.8G, the 2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback 1.5 offers richer configurations—HUD head-up display and an 8-speaker audio system are standard—and it's nearly RM5000 cheaper, resulting in better value for money. When compared to the Honda Civic Hatchback 1.5T, although its power is not as strong as the latter, it offers better fuel efficiency and more affordable maintenance costs.
Overall, the 2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback 1.5 is a highly balanced family car. Its KODO design is distinctive, and practical features such as 7 airbags, a head-up display, and fuel economy are commendable, while maintaining Mazda's strong handling capabilities. It is suitable for families focusing on daily comfort and value for money in configurations, or for young professionals who have just started work and need a car that is easy to drive and hassle-free. If you’re not after extreme performance but want a hatchback that is “adequate and reliable” in every aspect, this car is worth considering.
