2022 Porsche Macan Review

In Malaysia's premium mid-size SUV market, German brands have always held a central position. Consumers demand both brand prestige and a balance between daily practicality and driving quality. The 2022 Porsche Macan, as a popular contender in this segment, features a 2.0T turbocharged engine paired with an all-wheel-drive system, along with Porsche's signature handling characteristics, consistently appealing to users seeking a combination of luxury and driving pleasure. This time, we got our hands on the standard version of the Macan for a test drive. Our main goal was to evaluate its actual performance in different scenarios, such as daily commuting and weekend getaways, to see whether this "entry-level" Porsche SUV can truly balance brand value and practicality.
From the exterior, the 2022 Macan continues Porsche's family design language. The overall lines are compact and powerful, presenting the typical stance of a sporty SUV. At the front, the large trapezoidal air intake grille paired with sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides offers excellent recognition; the four raised muscle lines on the hood further enhance the sporty atmosphere. On the side, the 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels (optional on the test vehicle) complement the sleek waistline, and the lines extending from the fender to the rear make the side view look sleek rather than bulky. The tail design is relatively simple, with the LED light bar being a signature feature of Porsche's recent design philosophy, providing a striking effect when lit. The dual circular exhaust system at the bottom on either side also reinforces its sporty orientation. As for the lighting system, the standard LED daytime running lights and taillights for all models offer good penetration and visibility for nighttime driving.
Sitting inside, the Macan's interior layout maintains Porsche's classic style, with the center console angled towards the driver for easy operation. In terms of materials, extensive use of soft-touch plastics, leather wrap, and metallic accents enhance the premium feel, though some plastic parts feel slightly ordinary, which is not particularly outstanding in comparison to other vehicles in the same luxury SUV class. The most noticeable feature on the center console is the 10.9-inch touchscreen display equipped with the Porsche Communication Management System (PCM), supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation functions. The interface is intuitive with smooth operation and a clear design layout. Below, some physical buttons remain for controlling the air conditioning and driving mode selection, offering good practicality. Regarding seating, the front sports seats provide excellent support and include power adjustments (including lumbar support), making long drives comfortable. The rear seats have decent legroom, with a 175cm passenger having about a fist's width between their knees and the front seatback, and about four fingers of headroom, which suffices for everyday family use. In terms of storage space, the central armrest box in the front row offers ample volume, and the door storage bins can accommodate two water bottles. The trunk has a standard capacity of 488 liters, which can expand to 1503 liters with the rear seats folded down—plenty of space for taking several suitcases or a stroller on a weekend family trip.
For the powertrain, the 2022 Macan is equipped with a four-cylinder 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 265PS and a peak torque of 400N·m. It is paired with a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system. These specs place this model in the upper-middle range among 2.0T vehicles in the same class. During actual driving, the power response is relatively prompt when starting, and light acceleration provides a noticeable push-back effect. Switching to Sport mode makes the transmission logic more aggressive, with faster downshifts, enabling swift power surges during overtaking by firmly stepping on the accelerator. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.4 seconds, and the actual experience aligns closely with this figure. For daily commuting, Comfort mode is sufficient, providing smooth gear changes and linear power delivery, perfectly suited for urban driving conditions.
In terms of handling, the Macan's performance truly aligns with Porsche's tuning style. The steering is precise with minimal play; it feels slightly heavy at low speeds, but provides plenty of confidence at high speeds. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards sportiness. It doesn't completely filter out small bumps on the road, but when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the body shows no significant excess sway and offers excellent support. When driving on mountain roads, the body roll is well-controlled, and the stability during consecutive cornering is satisfying. Regarding fuel consumption, we drove approximately 100km in both urban congested areas and highway sections. The combined fuel consumption was around 10.5L/100km, which is close to the official figure of 10.1L/100km. Considering its 2.0T+AWD powertrain configuration, this fuel consumption performance is within an acceptable range.
In terms of ride comfort, the Macan's performance is fairly average. As for sound insulation, there is some wind and tire noise at high speeds, but it is not particularly noticeable and doesn’t affect normal conversations. Engine noise becomes more pronounced during rapid acceleration, but it presents as a more robust sound rather than being annoying. The comfort of the seats has already been mentioned; the front seats offer good support, but the rear seatback angle is slightly upright, which might be fatiguing for long-term passengers.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2022 Porsche Macan are the brand influence of Porsche, its precise handling, and decent power output. Compared to competitors like the BMW X3 30i and Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 L in the same category, the Macan has an edge in handling and boasts a more distinguished brand image, although its rear space and interior luxury fall slightly short of the Mercedes-Benz GLC. It is well-suited for those who value the prestige of a luxury brand while prioritizing driving pleasure, and who don’t require overly spacious rear seating—such as young families (without the need for a second child) aged 30–40, or individuals/couples pursuing individuality and driving dynamics.
All in all, although the 2022 Macan is the entry-level model in Porsche's SUV lineup, it retains Porsche's core essence. Its handling and power performance remain strong while still meeting everyday family-use needs. If you're looking for a luxury mid-size SUV that balances brand value, handling, and practicality, the Macan is worth considering.
