2022 Porsche Macan S Review

The luxury mid-size SUV market in Malaysia has consistently been a stronghold for German brands. Consumers not only seek the sense of identity provided by these brands but also anticipate practicality and driving pleasure for everyday use. The 2022 Porsche Macan S, as a popular contender in this segment, stands out with its power upgrade from a 3.0T twin-turbo V6 engine, Porsche's signature handling tuning, and the luxurious feel of its configurations, making it a target model for many enthusiasts and family users. This time, we had the opportunity to test drive it; our main objective was to verify whether its balance of power, handling, and daily practicality truly lives up to the brand's claims, while also exploring where it excels compared to competitors in the same class.
From the exterior perspective, the Macan S continues Porsche's signature sporty style, with sleek and muscular lines throughout. At the front, the large trapezoidal air intake grille paired with horizontal air ducts on either side not only improves aerodynamic performance but also enhances its aggressive visual appeal. On the side profile, the 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels (optional on the test car) complement the continuous character line running from front to back, making the body appear more elongated. The rear design is clean and powerful, with LED taillights featuring Porsche's iconic four-point layout, offering high recognition; the quad exhaust outlets at the bottom further emphasize its performance-oriented nature. In terms of lighting, the standard LED headlights across all trims provide ample brightness and support automatic switching and steering assistance functions, making daily use highly convenient.
Stepping inside, the Macan S's interior maintains Porsche's luxurious feel and sporty atmosphere. The center console is wrapped in high-quality soft-touch materials, paired with metal trims and carbon fiber decorative panels (optional), delivering an outstanding sense of quality. The 10.9-inch touchscreen occupies the center of the dashboard, with a clear interface and smooth operation, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity features. The air conditioning control area retains physical buttons, with the resistance of the rotary knobs perfectly balanced, enabling easy blind operation. Regarding the seats, the sporty leather seats offer strong support and include electric adjustments (including lumbar support and lateral bolsters), ensuring fatigue-free long drives. As for rear space, thanks to the 2807mm wheelbase, legroom for rear passengers is relatively generous, and accommodating three adults in the back would not feel cramped. The central armrest comes with cup holders and storage compartments, adding to the practicality. When it comes to storage capacity, the trunk offers a regular volume of 488 liters, which can be expanded to 1503 liters by folding the rear seats flat, fully meeting the needs of daily family use and long-distance travel.
In terms of performance, the Macan S is powered by a 2.9T V6 twin-turbocharged engine delivering a maximum power of 380PS and a peak torque of 520N·m. This is paired with a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the engine's power response is incredibly quick, with just a light press on the accelerator at launch providing ample thrust. It achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.6 seconds (official data). During overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply prompts the transmission to downshift rapidly, delivering power on demand without any noticeable turbo lag. The driving modes include Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual. Switching to Sport Plus mode enhances the exhaust note to a deeper and more resonant tone, with more sensitive throttle response, providing an even greater driving pleasure.
In terms of handling and chassis, the performance of the Macan S is exceptional. The steering wheel is highly precise with minimal slack, providing clear directional control and giving a sense of unity between the driver and the car. The suspension system features an independent structure with front double wishbones and rear multi-links, coupled with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). In Normal mode, the suspension effectively filters out road bumps, ensuring comfort during daily driving. When switched to Sport mode, the suspension becomes stiffer, body roll is well controlled, and cornering stability is outstanding. The chassis exhibits excellent overall cohesion, and even on bumpy roads, there is no sense of looseness.
In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted tests under mixed road conditions (60% city roads and 40% highways). The actual fuel consumption was approximately 11.8L/100km, which is not far from the officially stated 11.1L/100km. For a performance-oriented SUV, this fuel efficiency is quite commendable. Regarding braking performance, the Macan S is equipped with front six-piston fixed calipers and rear four-piston fixed calipers. The braking effect is very linear, with short and stable braking distances, instilling a strong sense of confidence.
In terms of driving comfort, the Macan S also delivers commendable performance. Noise insulation is outstanding, with wind and tire noise well controlled even at high speeds. Engine noise is not noticeable in Normal mode and only enters the cabin in Sport Plus mode, creating a sporty atmosphere. The seat comfort is also excellent, with soft padding and strong support, ensuring that long drives won’t result in back or waist pain. Moreover, the PDK transmission offers highly smooth gear shifts, with almost no sense of jerking in daily driving, balancing both performance and comfort.
Overall, the 2022 Porsche Macan S delivers outstanding performance in power, handling, and luxury quality. Compared with competitors like the BMW X3 M40i and the Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 AMG, the Macan S stands out with its more precise handling and a design that is more distinctive to the brand. Additionally, the reliability and shift speed of the PDK transmission are slightly superior. However, its rear space and trunk volume do not offer a significant advantage over competitors, and the high cost of optional features can increase the purchasing expense.
In conclusion, the Macan S is a great choice for those who pursue driving pleasure while also needing practicality for daily use. If you value brand image, enjoy a sporty style, and occasionally require a vehicle that meets family needs, the Macan S is definitely worth considering. It not only delivers ample excitement on the track but also provides comfort and convenience in daily life.
