In Malaysia's B-segment sedan market, fuel efficiency, practicality, and smart features have always been the core demands of family users. Hybrid models have gradually become the mainstream choice in this niche market in recent years due to their low fuel consumption and smooth performance. The 2023 Honda City 1.5L e:HEV RS, which is a core model in Honda's hybrid lineup, not only continues the space advantage of the City series but also garners attention with its e:HEV hybrid system, Level 2 driving assistance, and sporty appearance. In this test drive, we focused on verifying its fuel efficiency, daily driving smoothness, and whether its smart features meet the commuting and family needs of local users.

In terms of appearance, the City e:HEV RS adopts a sporty design approach. The front’s honeycomb-patterned black grille paired with the RS-exclusive badge has high recognition; the sharp-shaped LED headlights on both sides connect with the chrome trim at the top of the grille, enhancing the visual width. The body side lines are smooth, and the 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (with 185/55 R16 tires) are well-proportioned with the body. The chrome trim at the bottom of the doors adds a touch of refinement. At the rear, the LED tail lights are treated with a smoked design, which echoes the small spoiler on the trunk lid. The overall style is youthful but not overly ostentatious, aligning with the local family users' preference for "low-key practicality."

Inside the car, the interior features a black main color scheme with silver trim accents, giving a clean and organized layout. The center console is equipped with an 8-inch touch display that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with smooth operation meeting expectations. Physical buttons are retained below the screen, making it easier to adjust the air conditioning and volume while driving. The seats are made of fabric material, with manually adjustable front seats offering moderate support and comfort for long rides. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, further expanding storage space. Regarding space, the vehicle's wheelbase is 2600mm, providing about a fist and two fingers' worth of headroom in the front, and up to two fists of legroom in the rear. Even passengers with a height of 175cm can sit comfortably. The trunk has a capacity of 410L, easily accommodating two 28-inch suitcases, which is suitable for short family trips. Additionally, practical details such as the front center armrest box and door panel storage compartments are thoughtfully designed. The front seat is also equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, convenient for charging external devices.

The power system is the core highlight of the City e:HEV RS. It is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine (maximum horsepower of 98PS) and a front electric motor (maximum horsepower of 108PS, torque of 253N·m), paired with an E-CVT transmission. During daily driving, the vehicle starts in pure electric mode, delivering quick and smooth power response. Acceleration from 0-60km/h is brisk, suitable for congested urban conditions. When pressing the accelerator more deeply, the engine integration is smooth, with almost no noticeable jolting. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 9.9 seconds, sufficient for everyday overtaking needs. The driving modes include Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, throttle response is more sensitive, but the overall tuning still leans towards comfort.

The handling and chassis performance align with the positioning of a family car. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned to be soft, effectively filtering out small road bumps. When driving over speed bumps or uneven surfaces, the car exhibits minimal jolting, ensuring good comfort. During cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, providing a stable ride for passengers without significant swaying. The steering wheel is light to turn with a moderate amount of play, making daily driving agile and parking and maneuvering simple. For braking, the front ventilated discs and rear disc brakes are paired with an electric parking brake, offering a linear braking response and a braking distance comparable to vehicles in the same class.

In the fuel consumption testing session, we drove 100 km under mixed road conditions (30% urban congestion, 40% highway cruising, 30% suburban roads). The actual fuel consumption was approximately 3.8L/100km, which is close to the official comprehensive fuel consumption of 3.6L/100km, showing excellent performance. In terms of noise control, during low-speed city driving (below 60km/h), the main noise is from the electric motor, with a decibel level of about 55dB. At high speeds of 100km/h, wind and tire noise slightly increase but remain within acceptable limits, not affecting conversations inside the car.

Intelligent safety features are one of the strengths of the City e:HEV RS. It is equipped with the Honda Sensing safety system, which includes ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and lane change assist. In actual use, ACC performs stable car-following during highway cruising, the lane departure warning reacts promptly, and the autonomous emergency braking system effectively intervenes in simulated sudden braking situations of the vehicle in front, enhancing driving safety. Additionally, the car is equipped with six airbags, tire pressure monitoring, ISO FIX child seat anchors, and other comprehensive features to meet the safety needs of family users.

Overall, the 2023 Honda City 1.5L e:HEV RS’s key strengths lie in its low fuel consumption, smooth hybrid driving experience, spacious interior, and comprehensive intelligent safety features. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Vios Hybrid, the City e:HEV RS offers advantages in terms of power responsiveness and smart features. Meanwhile, its price (RM 111,900) is not significantly higher than that of the Vios Hybrid (approximately RM 105,000), making it stand out in terms of value for money.

This car is suitable for family users who prioritize fuel efficiency, practicality, and safety features, especially consumers with long daily commutes and frequent family outings. Its smooth driving experience and comprehensive safety features cater well to the needs of urban commuting and short family trips.

In summary, the 2023 Honda City 1.5L e:HEV RS is a "balanced and well-rounded" hybrid sedan for family use that focuses on fuel-saving, practicality, and safety. It accurately addresses the pain points of local family users and is one of the top choices worth considering in the B-segment hybrid market.

Pros
The fuel consumption of the hybrid system is extremely low, less than 5L/100km even in traffic jams/with air conditioning on/climbing scenarios
Rich safety features, including active braking, ABS, vehicle stability system, and 6 airbags to ensure driving safety
Excellent power performance, quick starts, stable overtaking, sufficient motor torque, and no sluggishness when climbing
Cons
185 narrow tires are prone to drifting on slippery slopes, affecting stability on wet roads
The trunk space is relatively small, and the fastback design sacrifices storage capacity
The interior feels slightly plasticky, and the texture needs improvement

Today it was a heavy rainstorm and traffic was jammed. Lightly stepping on the accelerator made it smooth, and the fuel gauge barely moved. This hybrid is really awesome!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing Rawang, there was a heavy rainstorm. Even with the wipers going crazy, it was hard to see the road. The City’s autonomous emergency braking system suddenly alerted me—it turned out the car in front had braked sharply! The ABS and vehicle stability system kicked in instantly, bringing the car to a steady stop without a rear-end collision. The sense of safety from the six airbags is truly remarkable. However, the 185 narrow tires felt a bit slippery on the wet and steep road, but the RS's sporty tuning held up well during cornering. Fuel consumption? With the air conditioning on the entire journey, it was only 4.2L/100km, even with traffic jams on the way back to KL, it didn’t exceed 5. However, the trunk could barely fit three cabin-sized suitcases, as the RS’s fastback design does sacrifice some space.

Everyday traffic jams during the commute, this hybrid car really didn't let me down! Quick start and stable overtaking, with the air conditioning fully on, the fuel consumption is only 3.6L. Three friends in the back row don't feel cramped. The only downside is the plastic feel of the interior, but with this price, having ACC and 6 airbags, it's worth it!

Previously driving the old Myvi, upgrading to the City e:HEV RS really feels like moving up to the "smart version"! The appearance with the RS kit is super eye-catching, every day parking at the LRT station attracts a few glances, definitely worth giving 5 stars. The safety features are top-notch. Last week during KL's morning rush hour, when the car in front braked suddenly, I didn’t react in time, but the autonomous emergency braking stopped me with a "thud," and the 6 airbags + full ADAS set make me feel assured. However, the lack of a 360-degree camera is a point deduction since my beginner friends complain about being scared of scratching the car when reversing. Fuel consumption is a pleasant surprise, commuting from PJ to Seri Kembangan, even when stuck in unbearable traffic, it’s only 4L/100km. On weekends, taking the family to Genting, the ACC cruise control frees my right foot, and the electric motor’s torque performs well on uphill climbs without feeling sluggish. The only minor downside: the rear air-conditioning is a bit weak, so in Malaysia’s 35-degree heat, sitting there for too long can feel stuffy. But at over RM110K, with a hybrid system and long warranty, it’s worth it!
