In recent years, competition in Malaysia's B-segment hatchback market has intensified. Consumers are pursuing both the affordability for daily commuting and the practicality of features, and many models have focused on these two aspects. The 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 S is one of the most popular contenders in this segment. Its balanced product strength and reliable brand reputation have attracted many family users and young consumers. In this test drive, we will specifically examine whether its static experience and dynamic performance can truly meet the core needs of local users.

In terms of exterior design, the City Hatchback 1.5 S continues Honda's youthful family styling. The front features a large honeycomb grille, paired with sharp halogen headlights on both sides (with LED daytime running lights), providing a good level of identification. The side profile lines are sleek, with a waistline running from the A-pillar to the rear, enhancing the sense of dimension. The 16-inch wheels have a moderate design but fit well with the overall proportion of the car. The rear design is a highlight, with a strip-type taillight assembly, which, although using halogen light sources, has an eye-catching effect when lit. Together with the small spoiler, it enhances the sporty feel of the hatchback. Compared to the top-tier models, however, it lacks LED headlights and larger wheels, making it visually less striking. But for an entry-level model, this design is already quite aesthetically pleasing.

Stepping inside, the interior layout is simple and practical. The dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials. Although most areas are made of hard plastic, the craftsmanship is relatively neat, and there’s no obvious sense of cheapness. The 8-inch touchscreen located at the top of the center console operates smoothly, supports the Sound Plus feature and Bluetooth connectivity, and delivers decent audio performance with its 8-speaker sound system, sufficient for everyday music listening needs. The instrument panel utilizes an Electroluminescent Analogue design, which displays information like RPM, speed, and fuel consumption clearly. In terms of features, it comes standard with keyless entry, single-zone automatic air conditioning, a multifunctional steering wheel, and a front-row 220V power outlet, which are all very practical for daily use. For example, the keyless entry allows you to unlock the doors without removing the key, which is very convenient for family users often carrying items. The rear is equipped with air-conditioning vents and ISOFIX child seat anchors, showcasing thoughtful attention to details.

The space performance is one of the advantages of the City Hatchback 1.5 S. Its body dimensions are 4345mm×1748mm×1488mm, with a wheelbase of 2600mm, which is at a mainstream level for B-segment hatchbacks. The front seats support manual adjustments. A passenger with a height of 175 cm can sit comfortably with ample headroom and legroom. The rear space is even more surprising; a passenger of the same height seated in the back has about two fists of legroom to spare, and their head won’t touch the ceiling. Even with three adults seated, it does not feel overly cramped. The trunk offers a capacity of 289L, which is enough to fit two 20-inch suitcases for daily use. If larger items need to be loaded, the rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, significantly expanding the space and providing excellent practicality.

The dynamic driving part is centered around a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with a maximum horsepower of 121PS and a maximum torque of 145N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. The power response during start-up is relatively smooth, without any sudden thrust. Upon pressing the accelerator, the power is delivered linearly, and the acceleration process is smooth. During low to medium speeds, the gearbox has an intelligent shift logic that keeps up with the accelerator's rhythm. When overtaking, as long as you press the accelerator down deeply, the engine speed increases above 4000rpm, and the torque gets unleashed, making overtaking fairly easy. However, during high-speed driving, such as when exceeding 100km/h, the power reserves for further acceleration become somewhat insufficient, so it’s necessary to reserve sufficient distance for overtaking in advance.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a moderate turning effort with decent accuracy. The car follows well when changing lanes or turning during daily use. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, which is tuned toward comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most of the fine vibrations, so there’s no noticeable bumpiness. However, the body leans considerably when negotiating sharp turns, as it’s ultimately a family car and handling is not its main focus. The fuel consumption is as expected, with an official combined fuel consumption of 5.6L/100km. During this test drive, which included urban traffic congestion and highways, the actual fuel consumption was about 6.2L/100km, which is quite economical for a 1.5L model.

In terms of driving comfort, the performance of City Hatchback 1.5 S is commendable. Noise control inside the cabin is good, with minimal tire and engine noise below 60km/h. When driving at speeds over 80km/h, wind noise gradually becomes noticeable but doesn’t interfere with normal conversations. The seat padding is relatively soft yet supportive, so long-distance journeys won’t feel tiring. The rear seat backrest has a moderate angle, and with ample space, long trips won’t cause fatigue.

In summary, the 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 S has clear core advantages: spacious interior, practical features, economical fuel consumption, and comprehensive safety configurations, such as six airbags, vehicle stability control, reverse sensors, and a reverse camera, ensuring safety. Compared to the Toyota Yaris in the same class, it offers more spacious rear seating and richer features. Compared to the Proton Persona Hatchback, the Honda City Hatchback is more recognized by consumers for its brand reputation and reliability.

This car is very suitable for families who value balanced performance—it has low fuel consumption for daily commuting and low maintenance costs. The large rear space is suitable for family outings, and the practical features are well-thought-out and detailed. For young buyers with a limited budget but seeking reliability and practicality, it is also a good option. If you’re looking for an economical and practical family hatchback, the City Hatchback 1.5 S is worth considering.

The Myvi I previously owned was used for five years. When it was time to replace it, I compared it with the Vios Hatchback and eventually chose the City Hatchback 1.5 S — the exterior design really hit the spot for me! The fastback lines grab quite a bit of attention on the streets of KL, absolutely flawless. I gave safety 4 stars due to the rear drum brakes, which are sufficient for daily use but give me a slight psychological concern during high-speed emergency braking. However, the six airbags and ESP make driving on highways in Malaysia's rainy weather reassuring. During the morning rush hour on the LDP, the CVT is very smooth, and the start-stop technology has saved me quite a bit of fuel. The combined fuel consumption is 5.8L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure but still acceptable. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting, the hill-start assist is considerate, ensuring no rollback. With the rear seats folded 60:40, there's no problem fitting a baby stroller and camping gear. A minor gripe is that the halogen headlights aren't bright enough on rural roads; I'm planning to upgrade them to LEDs later. Overall, at a price of RM78k, it's a great value for family use and commuting!

Previously drove the old Vios, its power was as sluggish as a "turtle crawling." After switching to the City Hatchback 1.5 S, it felt like a "rebirth"! During the Jalan Ampang traffic jam in the morning rush hour, the CVT is as smooth as if it were "coated with butter." Just a light tap on the accelerator and it follows the car ahead; with 121 horsepower, overtaking is effortless. Performance scores a solid 5/5. The exterior is more dynamic compared to the sedan version, and the hatchback tailgate is perfect for stocking up at the Pasar Malam on weekends. The only downside is the halogen headlights, which feel a bit dim on the East Coast Highway at night, so I deduct 1 point. After folding down the 60:40 split rear seats, it easily transported a surfboard to Desaru Beach last week. Fuel consumption is 5.6L/100km, and a configuration like this for RM78k – what more could you ask for?

Today it was raining, and I was in a hurry, so I overtook in the overtaking lane. The push-back feeling when I stepped on the gas shocked me—it was amazing!

Been driving the City Hatchback 1.5 S for half a year, super agile in city traffic, and effortless when following cars in jams. The rear seats comfortably fit three friends without feeling cramped, and the hatchback trunk can perfectly fit a stroller and backpack. Fuel consumption is an economical 5.6L, but the halogen lights are slightly lacking at night. Overall, it's very worth it!
