2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 V Review

In Malaysia's B-segment hatchback market, practicality and cost-effectiveness have always been the core concerns of consumers. The Honda City Hatchback, as a popular contender in this segment, has once again captured the attention of families and young groups with its upgraded features and balanced performance in the 2023 1.5 V model. During this test drive, we focused on evaluating its spatial practicality, daily performance, and whether its features truly suit local usage scenarios to see if it can maintain its advantage in this highly competitive market.
The exterior of the 2023 City Hatchback 1.5 V continues the family-style design, with an overall youthful and dynamic style. The chrome trim on the front connects the LED headlights on both sides, visually widening the front, while the honeycomb grille paired with front fog lights enhances its sporty feel. The side profile is smooth, with body lines stretching from the A-pillar to the rear, making the sides visually appealing. The car is equipped with 16-inch tires and multi-spoke wheels, aligning with the positioning of a B-segment vehicle. The rear LED taillights are treated with a smoked finish, echoing the rear spoiler and enhancing its distinctiveness. The chrome trim at the bottom of the tailgate and the dual decorative exhaust outlets elevate the refined feel as well. The lighting system is fully LED, with automatic headlights and daytime running lights, making daily use more convenient.
Inside, the interior features black as the main tone. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and adorned with silver trim, with a texture that is above average in the same class. The 8-inch touch infotainment screen at the top of the center console offers decent responsiveness and supports the Sound Plus function, while the 8-speaker sound system provides sufficiently clear audio for listening to music on a daily basis. The instrument panel uses a traditional backlit analog display, showing intuitive information like RPM and speed; while it doesn’t feature a fully digital cluster, it is practical enough. The seats are made of fabric material, with manual adjustments for the front seats providing adequate support, ensuring no significant discomfort during long hours of driving. The rear seats can fold down in a 60:40 split or have the seat bases flipped up, which expands the trunk space and caters nicely to cargo needs.
In terms of space, the dimensions are 4345mm in length, 1748mm in width, and 1488mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2600mm, placing it among mainstream levels in the B-segment. The front-row seating offers ample space; a 175cm tall passenger, after adjusting the seat, will have one fist of headroom remaining. The rear seating provides a pleasant surprise; a passenger of the same height has two fists of leg room and one fist of headroom, avoiding a cramped feeling. The floor in the middle of the rear row is not overly raised, making it more comfortable for the middle passenger's feet. For storage, the front door panels can fit two bottles of water, there’s a storage compartment under the center console for a phone, and the central armrest box has moderate depth. The standard trunk space is 289 liters, and when the rear seats are folded down, it can fit a baby stroller or a large suitcase, meeting the needs for daily family shopping or short trips.
In terms of power, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power output of 121PS at 6600rpm and a peak torque of 145N·m at 4300rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. In daily driving, the car starts off quite briskly, with a linear throttle response. It feels nimble in low-speed urban driving, and accelerating to 60-80km/h is smooth. When overtaking, stepping on the gas harder prompts the gearbox to simulate gear shifts. The power output isn’t particularly aggressive but satisfies daily commuting and highway cruising comfortably. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 10.7 seconds, which is an average performance for naturally aspirated models in this class and doesn’t feel sluggish. There are two driving modes: Normal and Eco. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly more subdued, making it a good option for fuel economy-focused users.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is light and easy to maneuver, making parking and U-turns in the city effortless. On highways, it becomes slightly heavier, enhancing stability. The front McPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, filtering out most bumps when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, avoiding any harsh impacts. When cornering, the body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, ensuring passenger comfort. The rear brake is a drum type, but the daily braking performance is stable, with a moderate pedal travel and linear braking force. As for fuel consumption, during the test drive combining both city and highway driving equally, the average fuel consumption was around 6.2L/100km, which is close to the official combined fuel consumption figure of 5.6L/100km. This makes it a fuel-efficient choice for family users.
Regarding ride comfort, noise control is well done. At speeds under 60km/h in the city, wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable. At highway speeds of 100km/h, wind noise becomes somewhat louder, but still within an acceptable range. The air conditioning system is a single-zone automatic climate control, which cools quickly. It performs well in Malaysia's hot weather, bringing the temperature down swiftly. The rear seats also have air conditioning vents, taking care of the rear passengers. Features like keyless entry and start, as well as electrically folding side mirrors, are convenient for daily use and enhance overall user experience.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 V lie in its balanced space performance, practical features, and reliable powertrain. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the Toyota Yaris, it offers a more spacious rear cabin and richer features (like 6 airbags and 8 speakers). When compared to the Proton Persona Hatchback, it benefits from better brand reputation and resale value. This car is suitable for family users who prioritize space utility, fuel efficiency, and brand reliability, or young professionals looking for a well-rounded city car for commuting.
In summary, the 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 V does not have any significant shortcomings. It is a well-rounded vehicle that meets the needs of most daily use scenarios. If your budget is around 90,000 MYR and you’re looking for a worry-free, practical hatchback, it’s a choice worth considering.
