In the Malaysian C-segment sedan market, consumers are increasingly demanding balance – requiring sufficient power and practical features, all without exceeding their budget. The 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L E, as a popular contender in this segment, has always been a top choice for many families with its class-leading wheelbase, abundant active safety features, and 1.5T turbocharged engine. This time, we've got a test drive vehicle, and our main purpose is to verify if its actual performance lives up to its market popularity, and whether it can meet the needs of most people in scenarios such as daily commuting and weekend family outings.

Let’s first look at the exterior. The design of the Civic 1.5L E continues the family’s sporty style, with smooth and low-slung overall lines. The waistline running from the front to the rear of the car makes the body appear longer. At the front, the large black honeycomb grille paired with sharp LED headlights ensures high recognition; the blackened elements inside the headlights and the styling of the daytime running lights further enhance its sporty character. On the sides, the 16-inch multi-spoke wheels, while not particularly large, pair visually well with the 215/55 R16 tires. The rear design is relatively simple, with L-shaped LED taillights treated with a blackened effect that becomes striking when lit. A small spoiler on the trunk lid adds a touch of sportiness.

Opening the door, the interior design is simple and organized, adopting a multi-layered dashboard layout with soft-touch materials on top, which feel nice to the touch. The 10.2-inch full LCD instrument panel paired with a 9-inch central touchscreen enhances the tech-savvy atmosphere of the interior. The central screen responds quickly and supports CarPlay and Android Auto, making daily use very convenient. In terms of configuration, the Civic 1.5L E stands out: the driver’s seat is equipped with 8-way electric adjustment, and the passenger seat has 4-way manual adjustment, offering good support and wrapping. The wireless charging pad in the front row and USB ports in the rear row meet the charging needs of multiple passengers. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system provides excellent cooling performance, and the rear row has independent air vents, catering to the comfort of rear-seat passengers.

In terms of space, the wheelbase of this car reaches 2735mm, ranking it among the top in its class. After adjusting the front row to a comfortable seating position, a passenger with a height of 175cm would still have more than a fist’s worth of headroom. The legroom in the rear exceeds two fists, and headroom is around one fist, making it comfortable even for three adults to sit together without feeling cramped. The trunk offers a volume of 410L, which can hold two 28-inch suitcases in its standard configuration. The rear seats support a 4/6 split-folding feature, allowing for expanded storage space when folded down, which is very practical for transporting larger items.

The powertrain is one of the highlights of the Civic 1.5L E. The equipped 1.5T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 134kW (182 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 240N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, the car starts up briskly, with responsive acceleration and smooth, robust power delivery at low and medium speeds, making overtaking in urban traffic easy. When switched to sport mode, the throttle sensitivity is further enhanced, the engine revs are maintained at a higher range, and power delivery becomes more immediate, making it perform well in highway acceleration. This powertrain system boasts excellent smoothness, and the CVT transmission shows virtually no noticeable jerkiness, making daily commuting very comfortable.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel of the Civic 1.5L E is precise, with minimal slack, and it feels very light to turn, making low-speed parking effortless. The chassis adopts a combination of front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned for comfort without losing firmness. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the fine vibrations, and the body doesn't exhibit obvious bouncing. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides good support, resulting in minimal body roll and instilling enough confidence. The braking performance is also relatively linear, providing decent braking force in the initial stage, and the braking distance is within the normal range for vehicles of the same class.

In terms of safety features, the Civic 1.5L E can be considered class-leading. It comes standard with the Honda Sensing safety+ system, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. These functions significantly reduce the driver's workload during highway driving. Additionally, the six safety airbags (driver, passenger, front side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags) and the vehicle stability control system provide comprehensive safety protection for passengers.

Regarding fuel consumption, we conducted a test under mixed driving conditions, with city roads accounting for about 60% and highways about 40%. The results showed an average fuel consumption of approximately 6.8L per 100km. This performance is considered above average among vehicles in the same class with 1.5T engines. It only requires 92-octane gasoline, keeping daily running costs low. In terms of noise control, the performance of this car is also commendable. During low-speed driving, the cabin remains very quiet. At high speeds, there is some tire and wind noise, but they are within acceptable levels and do not affect normal conversations.

Overall, the 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L E has very distinct advantages: powerful yet smooth performance, spacious interior, abundant features, especially safety features that surpass its class, and impressive fuel efficiency. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla 1.5L Hybrid and the Mazda 3 2.0L, the Civic 1.5L E stands out with better performance and more space, along with richer features. Priced at around RM 125,000, it offers great value for money. It is suitable for families seeking performance, space, and features, with a budget of RM 120,000-140,000. It is versatile for daily commuting and weekend family trips. If you are looking for a well-balanced C-segment sedan, the Civic 1.5L E is definitely a great choice.

Every morning and evening during rush hours, it weaves through traffic easily, the 1.5T turbo rushes ahead with just a tap, and overtaking is never sluggish! Three friends in the back don't feel cramped, and the hatchback trunk can fit a stroller and backpack with space to spare. But you'll have to bear with the air conditioning in the first minute, though once it cools down, it's super cold—overall, it's fantastic!

Morning rush hour overtaking is straightforward, three brothers in the back seat don't knock their knees against the front seat, and the HUD allows you to keep your eyes on the road without looking down. However, the interior feels a bit plasticky, but the eight speakers are powerful enough for Malay songs. Perfect for grocery shopping and picking up kids!

Previously, my old Myvi felt underpowered on highways, but switching to the Civic 1.5E is truly satisfying! During the morning rush hour in KL traffic, the ACC's adaptive cruise control is super convenient, no need to keep pressing the gas and brakes; on weekends, taking my family to Genting Highlands is effortless, with the 1.5T turbo delivering 240Nm of torque at just 1700rpm, making uphill drives a breeze. The rear-row space is also comfortable enough for my parents to sit. The safety features are top-notch, with 6 airbags + autonomous emergency braking. Last time I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the system braked for me just in time—gave me a scare but also peace of mind. The exterior is really sleek, and the fastback design catches a lot of attention. A small downside is that the 16-inch wheels look a bit small, and the tire noise is somewhat apparent at high speeds. However, with such features at just over 130,000 RM, what more could you ask for?

This interior feels really comfortable to touch, soft and cozy, and even after driving for a long time, it doesn't feel tiring. Worth it!
