The C-segment sedan market has always been the first choice for Malaysian family users and young office workers, as it needs to balance the economy of daily commuting while offering enough space and features to meet family needs. The 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L V, positioned as a mid-to-high-level variant in the lineup, has been a popular option in this segment, thanks to its 1.5T turbocharged powertrain, comprehensive safety features, and exceptional space performance. We got a real vehicle this time to focus on testing its daily driving experience, practical configurations, and spatial performance to see if it truly satisfies the dual demands for being "easy to drive" and "practical".

Starting with the exterior, the 2023 Civic 1.5L V maintains the signature fastback design of the series, with smooth overall lines that are not overstyled but still highly recognizable. The front features Honda's latest family design, with a large black grille paired with sleek LED headlights, giving it a refined look. The chrome accents on the lower front bumper and the black surround around the fog light area add a touch of sportiness. The side profile has character lines extending from the hood to the rear, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke wheels, resulting in well-proportioned side aesthetics. At the rear, the iconic C-shaped LED taillights are striking. The small spoiler on the trunk and the hidden exhaust design strike a balance between a practical family car and a slightly sporty vibe. The lighting system uses LED across the board, including daytime running lights and automatic headlights, making daily driving more convenient.

Stepping inside, the overall interior style leans towards simplicity and practicality. The dashboard is covered with soft materials, offering a pleasant tactile feel, and is decorated with silver trim accents, avoiding a cheap appearance. The 9-inch central control screen is positioned on top of the dashboard, with a clear interface and smooth operation. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making everyday phone connectivity convenient. The steering wheel has a multifunctional design, with media and phone controls on the left and ACC adaptive cruise control and safety assistance system controls on the right. The button layout is reasonable and allows for easy operation without looking. A head-up display (HUD) comes standard, showing speed, navigation, and safety warning information, so you don’t have to look down at the instrument panel, which improves driving safety.

In terms of features, this car performs quite well. The front seats are 8-way electrically adjustable, while the passenger seat is manually adjustable in 4 directions. The seat cushions are moderately firm, provide good support, and are comfortable for long drives. The rear space is an advantage of the Civic. With a wheelbase of 2735mm, a passenger of 175cm tall can sit with about two fists of legroom, and there is adequate headroom without feeling cramped. The rear comes with air conditioning vents and USB ports, and the middle floor's protrusion is not high, making it comfortable to accommodate three passengers. The trunk offers 497 liters of storage capacity, enough to fit two suitcases, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split, making it possible to occasionally carry larger items. Additionally, practical features like keyless entry, one-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are all available, making daily use very convenient.

For the powertrain, the 1.5T turbocharged engine has a maximum power output of 182PS and a peak torque of 240N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. The power response is brisk during takeoff, with no noticeable turbo lag; a light tap on the accelerator is enough to keep up with traffic. Mid- to high-speed acceleration is also decent; when overtaking, pressing the accelerator more deeply prompts the transmission to quickly adjust the gear ratio, resulting in smooth and continuous power delivery. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 8.4 seconds, which is more than sufficient for everyday family use. There are two driving modes, Normal and Sport, with the latter providing more sensitive throttle response for occasional spirited driving.

In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal play. The car's body remains stable during cornering. The suspension system features front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link setup, which is tuned for comfort without sacrificing support. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension can filter out most of the vibrations, ensuring minimal bumpiness and maintaining comfort for rear passengers. At high speeds, the vehicle's stability is excellent, and it doesn't feel floaty during 120km/h cruising. The braking system also performs well with linear deceleration, clear pedal feedback, and strong confidence during emergency stops.

In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted tests under mixed road conditions, including urban congestion and highway cruising. The fuel consumption was about 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers, which is close to the official figure of 6 liters. For a 1.5T engine model, this fuel efficiency is very economical. Noise control is also commendable, with minimal wind and tire noise at high speeds, ensuring that conversations inside the car are not affected.

Safety features are a highlight of this car. The Honda Sensing safety system comes as standard across all models, including lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane change assist, and ACC adaptive cruise control. During highway cruising, ACC can automatically follow other vehicles, and the lane-keeping system keeps the car centered in its lane, reducing long-distance driving fatigue. Six airbags and reminders for unfastened seat belts throughout the cabin provide comprehensive protection for passengers.

Overall, the 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L V has distinct advantages: spacious interior, practical configurations, smooth performance, economical fuel consumption, and comprehensive safety features. Compared to competitors like the Toyota Corolla Altis, the Civic offers stronger performance, more space, and richer features. Compared to the Mazda 3, the Civic is more practical and suitable for family use. This car is especially well-suited for families prioritizing space, features, and safety, or young professionals who need a vehicle for both commuting and family use. If you are looking for a reliable, user-friendly, and cost-effective C-segment sedan, the Civic 1.5L V is worth considering.

In summary, the 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L V is a highly balanced family sedan with no obvious weaknesses. It performs well in all aspects to meet daily driving needs. Whether for commuting or family trips, it handles both scenarios with ease, making it a highly recommended model in the C-segment car market.

Previously, I drove the old version of the City, and switching to the Civic V version feels like a real upgrade! During the morning rush hour crawling on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 1.5T turbo delivers 240 Nm at just 1700 rpm, making following traffic super smooth, and the CVT doesn't have the jerky feel of the old City anymore. Over the weekend, I took my family to the foothills of Genting Highlands, and the chassis felt very stable on corners, much more solid than my friend's Corolla Altis. The safety features are comprehensive, and the ACC on the highway makes following traffic very convenient. However, the slightly raised floor in the middle of the rear seat makes it a bit uncomfortable for a third passenger's feet. The fuel consumption is about 7L in the city, and it can go down to 5.5L on highways, which is satisfying considering the rising fuel prices in Malaysia. The coupe-like design is very stylish, and parking at Lalaport, it definitely gets a lot of attention!

Last week, while driving on the highway in heavy rain, the automatic braking system suddenly intervened and helped me stop — this sense of safety is even more timely than the co-pilot handing me water!

As the owner of a 2023 Civic 1.5V in Malaysia, I truly feel that the money spent was worth it! The old Vios I drove before had poor power performance. After switching to the Civic, driving during the morning rush hour on the LDP highway is a breeze. With the 1.5T engine and CVT, just tapping the accelerator makes it zoom forward, and overtaking is super satisfying. The ACC even lets me rest my right foot. On weekends, I take my family to Genting, and it tackles uphill climbs effortlessly. The rear space is spacious, providing comfort for my wife and kid. The safety features are fully loaded, with 6 airbags and autonomous braking. Once, I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the system automatically braked for me. It gave me a scare but also a great sense of security! As for the exterior, the fastback design has high curb appeal and looks way better than the Corolla Sport. The only minor complaint is some tire noise, so I have to play some music while on the highway, but it doesn’t really affect the overall driving experience. Highly recommended for friends looking to switch cars!
