A-segment hatchbacks have always been a popular choice in the Malaysian market. This category focuses on daily commuting and family transportation, with users placing a high emphasis on value-for-money, practicality, and safety features. The 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV, as the flagship version in this segment, not only continues the Axia series' advantage of high cost-performance but also offers upgraded safety features and intelligent technology — for example, six airbags and Level 2 driving assistance come as standard, which is uncommon in vehicles of a similar price range. This time, we got our hands on the actual car to test whether its features are genuinely practical, whether its space can meet family needs, and whether its performance and handling are suited for local road conditions.

Approaching the car, the exterior of the new Axia 1.0 AV looks sharper than the previous model. The front features Perodua's family-style "Dynamic Horizon" design language, with a large blacked-out grille complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides. The headlight units also integrate daytime running lights, giving the overall look high recognition. The side body lines are sleek, with 14-inch alloy wheels that are simple in design and well-proportioned to the vehicle. At the rear, the horizontal layout of the LED taillights creates a clear lighting effect when illuminated, while the black decorative strip on the lower bumper adds a touch of sportiness.

Entering the car, the interior design leans towards practicality. The dashboard is covered in soft-touch materials, which feel noticeably more refined compared to the previous model. The instrument panel is a 10.25-inch fully digital screen displaying extensive information, including speed, fuel consumption, driving assistance status, and more, with smooth responsiveness when switching interfaces. The central control screen is a 7-inch multifunctional digital display that supports Bluetooth connection and smartphone mirroring. Its operation is straightforward, making it easy for even beginners to get accustomed to. In terms of features, the HUD head-up display is a standout, providing real-time speed and navigation information to reduce the need for drivers to look down frequently. The front row is equipped with a digital controlled manual air-conditioning system with memory function, offering more precise temperature adjustments. The front row also includes a 220V power outlet, facilitating convenient charging for external devices.

Regarding space, the car measures 3760mm × 1665mm × 1505mm with a 2525mm wheelbase, which is standard for A-segment vehicles. The front seats provide ample space, with the driver’s seat offering 4-way adjustment. A 175cm passenger sitting in the front will have about a fist's worth of headroom and legroom to spare. The rear seat space is also adequate for adults, with similar passengers having about two fists' worth of legroom and one fist of headroom, ensuring they do not feel cramped. The trunk capacity is 265L, which can fit two 20-inch suitcases, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, creating more cargo space for transporting larger items when needed. For storage details, the front door pockets can fit two bottles of water, while the center console box and glovebox are spacious enough for daily essentials.

In the power department, the car is equipped with a 1.0L naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum power of 50kW (68PS) and a maximum torque of 91Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, the car responds quickly when starting off and is very agile when following traffic in congested urban areas. After accelerating to 60 km/h, the power output stabilizes, and overtaking requires deeper throttle input. However, the transmission downshifts promptly, and the revs climb to deliver the necessary power. There are two driving modes available: Eco and Normal. In Eco mode, throttle response is slightly dulled, resulting in better fuel efficiency, while Normal mode is better suited for daily commuting with more linear power delivery.

In terms of handling experience, the steering wheel is lightweight and precise, making daily parking or U-turns effortless; the suspension system features a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, it filters out most vibrations, and the body doesn't exhibit noticeable jolting; during cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, offering good stability. Fuel consumption meets expectations—we drove 50 km each in urban and highway conditions, and the combined fuel consumption was approximately 4.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official rating of 3.7L/100km, but considering real-world road conditions, this result is already excellent. In terms of braking performance, the combination of front ventilated disc and rear drum brakes responds promptly, and during emergency braking, the body remains stable without any deviation.

Safety features are one of the core advantages of this car. All models come standard with 6 airbags (including front and rear head curtain airbags), ABS, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, autonomous braking, and other L2-level driving assistance features. During our tests, we found the forward collision warning system to be very sensitive, issuing timely alerts when the distance with the vehicle ahead became too close; the lane departure warning system gives a reminder through steering wheel vibrations when the vehicle crosses lanes, improving driving safety.

As for driving comfort, noise control is well-executed. While driving in the city, tire noise and engine noise are relatively low. When driving on the highway at speeds up to 100km/h, wind noise increases slightly but does not affect conversation within the cabin. Seat padding is soft yet supportive, ensuring long-lasting comfort for passengers. The rear seats are equipped with air conditioning vents, which quickly regulate the rear temperature, enhancing comfort for rear passengers.

In summary, the 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV has clear core advantages: exceptional safety features, with all models equipped with 6 airbags and L2-level driving assistance, which is rarely seen in cars of the same price range; practicality and space, meeting the daily needs of a family; economical fuel consumption, leading to low long-term usage costs. Compared to models in the same class, such as the Proton Iriz 1.3L Executive, the Axia 1.0 AV offers more comprehensive safety features while being more budget-friendly, making it highly cost-effective.

This car is suited to a wide range of groups, such as families that prioritize safety and practicality, as it can handle both daily commutes and weekend outings. It is also suitable for young professionals who are just starting their careers, as its low fuel consumption and affordable maintenance costs alleviate economic pressure. Overall, it is a well-balanced A-segment model without significant shortcomings, meeting the daily needs of most users.

If you're looking for a safe, practical, and economical vehicle for everyday use, the 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV is worth considering. It offers premium features at an affordable price, making it a highly competitive model in the A-segment market.

Owner of 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV
As the owner of the 2023 Axia 1.0 AV for three months, I really want to praise its interior! When I used to ride in my friend’s old Axia, it always felt overly plastic. The new model is completely different—the dashboard uses soft materials that don’t feel cheap, and the fully digital instrument panel and HUD (head-up display) are super practical! During daily traffic jams in KL, I don’t need to lower my head to check the speed, and navigation info can also be projected onto the HUD, which is much easier on the eyes. Plus, the keyless entry and start system are so convenient; when I’m in the car park at the LRT station, I just press the door handle to unlock it, way better than digging out the keys. The 60:40 split of the rear seat is also very handy—last week I helped my mom move flower pots, managed to fit three large pots in easily with no issue, the space is super flexible! As for the exterior, I’d give it 4 out of 5 because it looks nice overall but lacks a bit of surprise. The LED headlights at the front are sharp, and the daytime running lights provide good recognition—very easy to spot in a Pasar Malam (night market). However, the side profile is a little plain; compared with other small cars in the same segment, it’s not as stunning. But considering the price (less than RM 50,000), with features like a sunroof and electric folding side mirrors, it’s more than sufficient. After all, practicality is what matters most, and as long as the look is decent, it’s good enough!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV, driving it in Malaysia for more than half a year, my overall experience has been quite satisfying! First, let's talk about performance. I'll give it 4 stars— the 1.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT runs smoothly in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic, and the start is quite responsive too. However, when overtaking on the North-South Expressway, pressing the accelerator deeply can feel a bit "sluggish", so you need to leave some room in advance. But for daily commutes, it's completely sufficient, and the fuel consumption of 3.7L/100km is really economical. With a full 36L fuel tank, you can drive almost 1,000 kilometers, which is perfect for Malaysia's fuel prices! The interior deserves a 5-star rating! The fully digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen scream high-tech, and the Head-Up Display remains clear even on brightly lit roads, so you don't have to look down to check your speed. The seats are fabric but have decent support. After folding the 60:40 split rear seats, you can easily carry large bags of vegetables and fruits my mom buys from the market— the attention to detail is really impressive. I'm most reassured by the safety features, giving it a full 5 stars— 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all standard. Once in George Town, Penang, a motorcycle suddenly darted out on a narrow road, and the emergency braking kicked in just in time. It scared me, but it avoided an accident. There are also front and rear sensors and a reversing camera, making parking even in crowded places like Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur super easy, even for new drivers. As for the exterior, I'll give it 4 stars. The overall design is much more youthful than its predecessor, and the LED headlights have a high degree of recognition when on during the day. The single sunroof is great for opening up during a weekend drive to Genting Highlands, enjoying the mountain breeze. However, the rear design is fairly standard— if it were sportier, it would be perfect! Overall, as an A-segment compact car, the configuration at this price point is truly valuable for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV, after driving it for more than half a year in Malaysia, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Considering the frequent traffic jams in Malaysian cities, like my daily commute on the LDP highway, there are times when the car in front stops suddenly. The Axia's autonomous emergency braking system has literally saved me once — I was momentarily distracted by the navigation, and the car beeped and braked automatically, stopping just in time before hitting the car ahead! It also has 6 airbags and a vehicle stability control system. Last time, when driving on a rural road in the rain (many Malaysian roads are bumpy and slippery), I took a turn a bit too quickly. The car swayed slightly but stabilized quickly without losing control. By the way, the lane departure warning was super useful during my long drive to Penang, preventing me from veering off the lane when feeling drowsy. For safety, I’d easily give it a 5-star rating — no complaints at all! As for the exterior, I’d rate it 4 stars. The overall design is much more refined compared to the older Axia model. The LED headlights look great during the day and are bright enough at night. However, to be honest, the large grille at the front tends to accumulate leaves and dust due to Malaysia's frequent rain, and I have to clean it carefully each time I wash the car. Also, while the side profile lines are more streamlined than the old model, the rear design feels a bit plain. When parked at the KLCC parking lot, it somehow doesn’t stand out as much as the Myvi next to it. But as an A-segment small car, the overall look is still pleasing enough and perfectly suitable for daily use!

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV, having driven in Malaysia for more than half a year, I want to share my thoughts about its performance and safety. I'll give 4 stars for performance. After all, with a 1.0L naturally aspirated engine, it handles traffic in Kuala Lumpur city smoothly, and the CVT transmission shifts without any jerks. On the LDP highway, it stays stable even at 110km/h, but overtaking requires you to accelerate in advance—like last time on the North-South Expressway when overtaking a large lorry, I had to step on the gas hard, and the power delivery was somewhat slow, so I had to ensure plenty of distance. However, as a daily commuter car, this performance is more than enough, and it’s exceptionally fuel-efficient. Even in city driving, the fuel consumption is only about 4L, and a full tank lasts a long time. For safety, it deserves full marks! Having 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking at this price point really exceeded my expectations. Last month in George Town, Penang, a motorcycle suddenly darted out of an alley, and the autonomous braking system kicked in and stopped me just in time. It gave me a fright—I would’ve probably ended up in a collision without this feature. Also, the lane departure warning alerts me whenever I slightly drift across the line while on long drives, which is incredibly useful since I frequently travel on highways. In summary, as an A-segment compact car, the Axia 1.0 AV is sufficient in terms of performance and reliable in safety for Malaysian road conditions, fully meeting the needs for daily commutes and occasional short-distance trips.

Owner of 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Axia 1.0 AV, after driving in Malaysia for more than half a year, the overall experience has been quite satisfying! Let’s talk about the performance first, I’ll rate it 4 stars. For daily commuting in Kuala Lumpur, traffic jams are a common occurrence. The 1.0L engine paired with the CVT gearbox provides smooth starts and low-speed follow-ups without any jerky feeling. However, when it comes to overtaking on the North-South Expressway, you need to accelerate in advance, as the power delivery is more linear and doesn’t give an immediate surge. The fuel consumption is really surprising; the official figure is 3.7L/100km, but my actual usage is about 4L, which saves me quite a bit of money with Malaysia’s rising fuel prices. The chassis tuning leans towards comfort, and it absorbs speed bumps and potholes pretty well without being too bumpy. In terms of exterior design, I’ll rate it 4 stars as well. The design of the new-generation Axia looks much younger than the old model. The LED headlights and daytime running lights are very sharp, and the body lines are more streamlined. I chose the white color, and paired with the 14-inch alloy wheels, it looks quite stylish. The rear design is also very full and has high recognition. It’s just that the color options for the body feel a bit limited—if there were more vibrant color choices, it would be even better. Overall, as an A-segment small car, the Axia 1.0 AV performs quite competently on Malaysian roads, suitable for daily commuting and short trips.
