In Malaysia's B-segment sedan market, family users and young professionals have always been the main consumer groups. They need vehicles that offer economic efficiency for daily commuting, practical interior space, and basic smart features, while also being highly price-sensitive. The 2023 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT, positioned as a popular model in this segment, highlights its "balanced features + affordable pricing" as core selling points. Can it truly satisfy the diverse needs of its target users? This article will provide a comprehensive analysis of this car's performance through a static showcase and dynamic test drive.

Approaching the 2023 Persona 1.6 Executive, the overall exterior design adheres to Proton's family design language, with clean and sharp lines. The front grille features a large blacked-out design, complemented by horizontal chrome strips connected to halogen headlamps on both sides, enhancing its visual width. The through-type lower air intake on the front bumper further adds a sporty touch, while the integrated front sensors maintain the overall harmony. Looking at the side profile, the dual waistline design extends from the front fender to the rear, paired with 16-inch multi-spoke wheels, making the 4366mm body length appear more elongated. The 2555mm wheelbase ranks slightly above average in its class, ensuring adequate interior space. At the rear, the smoked taillights adopt a horizontal layout, echoing the chrome strip on the rear bumper. A hidden exhaust design emphasizes the sedan's stable, family-oriented style. As for the lighting system, the standard halogen headlights are bright enough for typical urban driving, while the addition of daytime running lights improves daytime recognition.

Stepping inside, the interior predominantly features black tones, with soft-touch materials on the dashboard and silver trim accents, presenting a commendable overall texture for its price segment. The central control area is clearly laid out, with an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle that supports Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring, offering operational smoothness sufficient for daily use. Below the screen are physical buttons, allowing for convenience when adjusting the air conditioning or volume during driving. Standard features include keyless entry/start, a multifunction steering wheel, and rear air-conditioning vents, all of which provide strong practicality. The instrument cluster is a backlit analog design that intuitively displays information on RPM, speed, fuel level, etc., but lacks the technological appeal of a fully digital display. The seats are made of fabric material, with manual adjustments for the front seats. The cushions and backrests offer moderate support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, paired with a trunk capacity of 510L, which can easily accommodate strollers or large luggage, catering to family storage needs.

In terms of power, the car is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine producing a maximum power of 80kW (109PS) and a peak torque of 150N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During initial acceleration, the power delivery is smooth, and throttle response is linear, making it suitable for city traffic conditions. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the transmission simulates gear shifts, and while the acceleration is not particularly brisk, it is sufficient for overtaking. There are two driving modes: Normal and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity slightly increases, but overall performance remains focused on smoothness. The chassis employs a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension system, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs most road bumps when passing speed bumps or uneven surfaces, keeping the vehicle stable. At high speeds, the chassis feels solid and avoids excessive float, although there is noticeable body roll during cornering, ideal for a more composed driving style. Fuel efficiency meets expectations, consuming approximately 6.5-7L per 100km in urban conditions, which can drop to around 5.5L per 100km on highways, offering decent economy for family users.

In terms of noise control, the interior is relatively quiet at speeds below 60km/h, with wind noise and tire noise not being obvious; as the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise gradually increases but remains within an acceptable range. The braking system features a combination of front ventilated disc brakes and rear drum brakes, with a moderate brake pedal stroke and linear braking power release, providing sufficient braking confidence for daily driving. For safety features, 4 airbags, vehicle stability control, and hill-start assist are all standard, meeting basic safety requirements.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 Proton Persona 1.6 Executive CVT lies in its balance — with a price of 53,300 MYR, spacious interior, practical configurations, and reliable powertrain, it offers high cost-performance within its class. Compared with competitors like the Perodua Bezza, it boasts a larger trunk capacity and more comprehensive safety features; compared with the Honda City, it has a significant price advantage. This car is suitable for families focusing on practicality and affordability, or for young professionals with a limited budget who need a reliable commuting car. If you prioritize a smooth driving experience, sufficient space, and an affordable price, this car is worth considering.

Cons
The comfort is poor when going over speed bumps with the rear suspension, with noticeable bouncing issues
The interior has a high proportion of plastic materials, resulting in average texture

As a Malaysian car owner, having driven the Persona Executive CVT for half a year, I truly feel it's worth the RM53k! I used to drive an old model Myvi, and compared it to the Vios when switching cars — the price difference is over 20k, and the Persona offers significantly more space; the 510L trunk is sufficient for packing goods after family trips to Genting on weekends. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, the CVT is so smooth it feels like there are no gear shifts, and the 1.6NA engine isn't sluggish for city overtaking either; last week I drove to Penang on the highway, stable at 120km/h, though the rear suspension feels a bit bouncy when going over speed bumps (minor complaint). The interior has a lot of plastic but the build quality is solid, the 8-inch screen with CarPlay is very convenient, and the keyless entry is super practical during KL's rainy days. Safety features include 4 airbags and ESC, which is reassuring when family members are riding along. The only regret is the lack of automatic air conditioning, but I've gotten used to manual adjustments.
