Specs

The competition in the B-segment SUV market in Malaysia has always been intense. Consumers want vehicles that are well-sized for urban cruising while having high demands for features and practicality. As a flagship model of the brand, the 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive has undergone minor updates for this facelift, mainly focusing on slight adjustments to its features and power calibration. The purpose of our test drive is to verify whether it still maintains its value-for-money position for daily use.

Starting with the exterior, the car measures 4330×1800×1609mm with a wheelbase of 2600mm, displaying typical compact SUV proportions. The front adopts the family design language with a large grille complemented by black trim. LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard, offering good recognition when lit. The side profile is simple, with 17-inch tires well-proportioned to the body size. Black protective strips along the door enhance practicality. At the rear, the smoked LED taillights, along with a silver skid plate below the rear bumper, add a touch of ruggedness. The overall style aligns with the youthful preferences of the target audience.

Inside the car, the interior adopts a predominantly dark tone with a clear layout for the center console. An 8-inch touchscreen is centrally positioned, offering smooth operation and supporting basic multimedia functions. The instrument panel features an Electroluminescent Analogue display, presenting essential information like RPM and speed in a clear and straightforward manner. As for materials, the upper part of the center console is made of hard plastic, but the door armrests and seats are wrapped in leather, providing a pleasant tactile feel. In terms of features, the front driver's seat supports electric adjustment, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding the rear trunk capacity from 330L to accommodate larger items, meeting cargo needs. Notably, the front air conditioning is equipped with an N95 cabin filter, and there are separate air vents for the rear seats, complemented by a 220V/230V power outlet for added practicality.

For performance, the 1.5T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 150PS, with peak torque output available between 1500-4000rpm, paired with a DCT transmission. During daily driving, the car responds crisply when starting, and the low-to-mid-speed acceleration is sufficient for city roads. When overtaking, a deeper throttle push prompts the transmission to downshift promptly, and power delivery remains smooth. The suspension system consists of MacPherson struts in the front and a torsion beam in the rear, tuned for comfort. It absorbs most bumps and vibrations over speed bumps or uneven roads, keeping body movement within reasonable limits. On highways, the steering wheel provides good precision, ensuring stability when changing lanes. However, there’s mild body roll during sharp turns, which is typical for family-oriented SUVs. The official combined fuel consumption stands at 6.5L/100km, while on test drives, city conditions yielded approximately 7.2L/100km, and highway conditions returned around 5.8L/100km, meeting expectations.

In terms of ride comfort, noise insulation is average, as tire and wind noise become noticeable at high speeds, though they do not affect normal conversations. The seats provide moderate cushioning, making long journeys comfortable without causing fatigue. The braking system performs reliably, with a linear pedal feel and braking distances meeting segment standards. The cruise control system is a basic variant without adaptive functionality but is sufficient for maintaining a steady speed on highways. The combination of front and rear sensors with a reversing camera makes parking easy and is user-friendly for beginners.

In summary, the core advantage of the 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive lies in its well-balanced features. Configurations such as 6 airbags, electric seats, and an N95 air-conditioning filter are highly competitive among vehicles in the same price range. Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross, it offers a lower price and more features, delivering excellent value for money. Its overall performance makes it suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and budget, whether for daily commuting or short weekend trips. If you are looking for a compact SUV with sufficient features and a friendly price, the X50 Executive is still a worthy choice to consider.

Pros
The interior configuration is practical, with an electrically adjustable driver's seat, 8-inch touchscreen, and smooth CarPlay, enhancing driving convenience.
Comprehensive safety configuration, including 6 airbags, standard body stability system, timely intervention of ABS and ESP ensuring driving safety.
1.5T engine delivers strong power, with early turbo involvement, making hill climbing and overtaking easy, and the DCT transmission shifts smoothly.
Cons
The rear air conditioning airflow is small or the vents are positioned too low, leading to a poor experience for middle passengers, and fabric seats are stuffy in summer.

Owner of 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive
As the owner of a 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive in Malaysia for three months, I am quite satisfied with the interior and safety features. Let me start with the interior. I chose the Executive version mainly because of its features — the electrically adjustable driver’s seat is really practical, making it more comfortable for me during daily traffic jams. The 8-inch touchscreen on the center console is also responsive; using CarPlay for navigation to KLCC or the Johor Bahru checkpoint is very convenient. However, although the rear air conditioning is available, the airflow is not very strong, and the fabric seats feel a bit stuffy in the summer after sitting for a long time. If they could be replaced with leather seats, it would be perfect. Overall, I’d rate it a 4, as it's much better than the basic version but still has room for minor improvements. Next, let’s talk about safety, which is really important when driving in Malaysia! In KL city, motorbikes often suddenly cut in, and on highways, there are occasional sudden brakes. The 6 airbags (including front and rear curtain airbags) and the vehicle stability system in the X50 give me great peace of mind. Once, on the North-South Expressway, I was following a car too closely, and the truck in front suddenly braked. When I stepped on the brakes, the ABS engaged promptly, avoiding a rear-end collision. Another time, when turning in rainy conditions, the ESP kicked in quickly to stabilize the car. However, if it could include active braking, it would be even better since there are too many motorbikes in Malaysia, and sometimes it's hard to react quickly enough. With the current safety features, it’s sufficient for daily needs, so I’d give it a solid 4. It’s completely reliable for family use.

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive, I have been driving it in Malaysia for more than half a year and I am overall quite satisfied! Talking about the exterior first, the design of the X50 is very striking among the local B-segment SUVs. The large blacked-out grille paired with Proton's new badge on the front, when parked at KLCC parking lot or strolling around Jalan Bukit Bintang, I’ve been asked several times by passersby if it’s an imported car. The body lines are also very neat, especially the side waistline and the 17-inch wheels. When driving along Penang's coastal roads, they look particularly textured under the sunlight. However, I would give it a 4-star rating because the rear through-type taillights have average recognition during the day. They only look good when lit up at night. It would be perfect if they were more prominent during the day. Speaking of performance, the 1.5T engine's power is absolutely enough for road conditions in Malaysia. During the usual traffic jams commuting in Kuala Lumpur, the DCT transmission shifts relatively smoothly without obvious jerks. Once on the North-South Expressway, with the RPM reaching 1500 and the turbo kicking in, overtaking becomes especially easy — the last time I carried the whole family to Genting Highlands, the power didn’t feel underwhelming even when climbing slopes. With the air-conditioning running at full power in N95 filter mode, the vehicle didn’t feel sluggish. However, I’ll give it 4 stars because when speeding over 120 km/h on highways, wind noise becomes slightly noticeable, especially on bridge segments of the North-South Expressway, though turning up the music easily masks it. Overall, for a vehicle at this price point to deliver such performance, it really stands out in the local segment!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive, I have been driving it in Malaysia for more than half a year, and the overall experience has been very satisfying! Let me talk about the performance first. This 1.5T turbocharged engine is really powerful. On the congested roads during the morning and evening rush hours in Kuala Lumpur, it achieves maximum torque at just 1500 rpm, making it very agile for following or overtaking cars, without any sluggishness typical of small-displacement cars. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the power output while climbing was also very smooth. The DCT transmission shifts quickly, with no lag at all. Performance gets a solid 5 out of 5! As for the interior, the 8-inch touchscreen on the center console responds quite quickly, and the air conditioning comes with an N95 filter, which is very practical in Malaysia's occasionally hazy weather. However, there’s a bit too much plastic used, especially on the lower part of the door panels, which feels average in texture. If softer materials could be added, it would be even better. So, I’ll give it 4 out of 5. I’m also quite satisfied with the safety features. Six airbags plus a vehicle stability system—during an emergency brake on slippery roads in Penang recently, the ABS and ESP intervened promptly, bringing the car to a steady stop. However, the seatbelt reminder is only available for the front row, and adding one for the rear rows would make it even more considerate. So, safety also gets a 4 out of 5. Overall, being able to buy such a car at this price point, the value for money is truly excellent!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive, after driving it for over half a year in Malaysia, I genuinely feel that this car is very suitable for local road conditions! First of all, let's talk about safety. I give it 4 stars because its features are indeed practical—6 airbags, vehicle stability control are all standard features. With the frequent rainy days in Kuala Lumpur, the last time I encountered water pooling suddenly on the LDP highway, the car stayed very stable without skidding. However, adding active braking would make it perfect. After all, there are a lot of motorbikes in Malaysia, and it can get a bit nerve-wracking when they suddenly dart out. I give the interior a full score! Once you step inside, it feels worth every penny. The leather seats feel very comfortable to the touch, the central control screen is responsive, and even CarPlay works very smoothly. The most surprising feature is the N95 air conditioner filter. On hazy days in Malaysia or during traffic jams, closing the windows and turning on the air conditioning doesn’t make it feel stuffy. This is especially friendly for families with kids. Performance deserves a full 5 stars! The 1.5T power is completely sufficient for local use—whether it's climbing the hilly roads of Genting or maneuvering through the narrow alleys in Penang, just step on the gas and it delivers the power. The transmission shifts very smoothly, almost no jerks during stop-and-go traffic jams, and the fuel consumption is only around 7L per 100km, much more economical compared to my old car. Overall, this car is truly well-suited for family use in Malaysia, and its value for money is exceptionally high!

Owner of 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive
As the owner of a 2023 Proton X50 1.5T Executive for nearly half a year in Malaysia, the most satisfying aspect is the safety features, and giving it 4 stars feels really reasonable. For instance, my family lives in Selangor, and I commute daily on the LDP highway. During rush hour, the traffic is incredibly heavy; there were several instances where I almost rear-ended the car in front due to close following, but the autonomous emergency braking system intervened in time to prevent any accidents—this feature is truly a lifesaver in Malaysia's "road hogging" traffic conditions! Moreover, features like six airbags and vehicle stability control are all standard. Last time, while taking a rain-soaked curve, the car started to skid slightly, but the ESP immediately stabilized it. That moment made my palms sweat, but I felt reassured afterwards. However, the reminder for rear seat belts is only available for the front row. If you're carrying elderly family members or children and occasionally forget to remind them to buckle up, it can be a bit of a drawback. Otherwise, I would have given it five stars. The interior also deserves a 4-star rating and is very comfortable for daily use. Speaking of materials, the dashboard is mostly made of soft-touch plastic, which doesn't feel cheap, unlike some other cars at the same price point that are made entirely of hard plastic. My favorite feature is the N95 cabin filter. With Malaysia's year-round haze, especially during the dry season, I don't need to worry about inhaling dust even when using the external air circulation. This is a huge relief for someone like me who has rhinitis! However, there are minor shortcomings: for instance, the central screen is only 8 inches, which feels slightly inadequate when using navigation, and the infotainment system occasionally lags. Additionally, although the rear air-conditioning vents are standard, their design is a bit low, so the airflow isn’t very noticeable for someone sitting in the middle. That said, features like electronically adjustable seats and keyless entry are already impressive for this price point, making it fully sufficient for daily family use.
