The Malaysia C-segment SUV market has always been highly competitive among family users and young consumers. Models that strike a balance between practicality, features, and price tend to be more popular. The 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD returns as one of the hot contenders in this segment, featuring optimized configurations and a mature powertrain. Our main goal during the test drive was to verify whether it could continue its previous reputation while meeting current users' higher demands for intelligent safety and driving comfort.

From the exterior, the new X70 Executive AWD continues the family-style design, showcasing a steady and atmospheric tone with youthful elements in the details. The large front grille, coupled with chrome trim, stands out with high recognition; the sharp design of the LED headlights on both sides, integrated with the grille, visually extends its width. The side of the car features smooth lines, and the 18-inch wheels are just the right size to match the vehicle's proportions without appearing too small. At the rear, the through-type taillights have a striking effect when lit, while the silver rear bumper skid plate adds a hint of rugged SUV styling. As for the lighting system, LED automatic headlights and daytime running lights come as standard, providing convenient daily use, while the addition of front fog lights improves visibility during rainy or foggy weather conditions.

Stepping inside the car, the interior layout is simple and practical, with soft-touch materials as the main theme. Most touchpoints are covered in leather, with the overall texture ranking above average for its price range. The centrally positioned 8-inch touchscreen has a moderate height and operates smoothly. Although it doesn't come with branded speakers, the nine-speaker system offers enough sound quality for daily music listening. There are plenty of standout features: the fully digital instrument cluster is clear and can switch between different driving information interfaces; the front seats support electric adjustment and ventilation functions, and the front passenger seat even has a shoulder adjustment switch, making it convenient for rear passengers to help adjust. The rear seat is equipped with air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, catering to the needs of backseat passengers. In terms of space performance, the vehicle's wheelbase is 2670mm. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, there are about two fists of legroom left in the rear, and the headroom does not feel cramped either. Even passengers around 180cm tall can sit comfortably. The trunk capacity is 515L, with the rear seats supporting a 60:40 split fold and recline. When folded down, the cargo space expands significantly, making it easy to store strollers or suitcases.

In the power segment, this car is equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged engine that delivers its maximum power at 5500rpm, paired with a DCT gearbox. During actual driving, the power response at start-up is relatively prompt without any obvious lag. During acceleration, the turbocharged thrust is sufficient for everyday overtaking, and when the accelerator is pressed firmly, the gearbox shifts quickly. However, during low-speed crawling, the transmission occasionally produces slight jerks, which does not significantly impact the overall driving experience. There are three driving modes available: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Switching to Sport mode increases the throttle's sensitivity, suitable for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal dead zones. During cornering, the vehicle's body roll is well-controlled, with no noticeable swaying. The suspension uses a front MacPherson and rear multi-link setup, which effectively absorbs minor road vibrations and cushions well over larger potholes, balancing comfort and stability. As an AWD model, although we did not conduct extreme off-road tests, the all-wheel-drive system provided better traction on slippery roads, enhancing the sense of security.

We conducted an actual test on fuel consumption, and the fuel consumption under combined road conditions is about 7.8L per 100 kilometers. On highways, it can drop to 6.5L, which is a mediocre result for a 1.5T SUV. In terms of safety configuration, 6 airbags, ACC adaptive cruise control, lane assist, autonomous emergency braking, and other features are standard. These configurations have a competitive advantage among vehicles in the same price range and can greatly enhance daily driving safety. As for driving comfort, the ventilated front seats are very practical in Malaysia's hot weather, as they can quickly cool down; noise control is well done, and both wind noise and tire noise at high speeds are not significant, so they won't affect conversations inside the car.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD lie in its balanced configuration and practical space. Compared to other models in the same class, its safety configuration is more comprehensive, and its interior texture and space performance are also competitive. Moreover, with a price controlled at RM 116,800, it offers great value for money. This car is very suitable for users who value family practicality, whether for daily commuting or weekend family trips. At the same time, its intelligent configuration and comfort can also meet the needs of young consumers. If you are looking for a well-equipped, spacious, and reasonably priced C-Segment SUV, the 2023 Proton X70 Executive AWD is worth considering.

Pros
The interior feels premium, front ventilated seats are practical, rear independent air conditioning is thoughtful, and the central control screen is easy to operate.
Comprehensive safety features, including ACC cruise control, active braking, and 6 airbags, enhance driving safety.
The AWD system is stable, providing strong grip on slopes, rainy mountain roads, and muddy roads, suitable for Malaysian road conditions.
Cons
The paint is relatively thin, and small scratches easily expose the primer or leave marks
Acceleration in full load or high-speed situations is somewhat sluggish, requiring deep throttle for overtaking
Some plastic parts have noticeable assembly gaps, with room for improvement in detailed craftsmanship

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD, after driving in Malaysia for almost half a year, the overall experience has been pretty good! Speaking of performance, I'll give it 4 stars because it's totally sufficient for daily use, but when you occasionally want to "have a little fun," it does feel like it's missing just a bit of power. On Malaysia's highways, such as the North-South Expressway, stepping on the accelerator to overtake, the turbo kicks in and the power comes in relatively quickly, and cruising at 120km/h is stable. However, when tackling hilly roads on the East Coast with a full load of 5 people and luggage, the acceleration feels a bit sluggish, and you have to step hard on the gas pedal to get it going uphill. The DCT gearbox occasionally has slight jerks in city traffic jams, but it doesn’t affect the overall experience. After all, a 1.5T engine paired with this powertrain performs well under Malaysian road conditions. As for the exterior, I’ll also give it 4 stars. Proton’s design is becoming increasingly international! The "Infinite Weave" front grille is very distinctive, and the LED headlights are particularly bright on rainy nights in Kuala Lumpur. Walking on busier streets like Jalan Bukit Bintang, it attracts quite a lot of attention. The body lines are sleek, and the 225/60 R18 wheels match the body proportions perfectly, not making it look too exaggerated. However, I wish the car's paint could be a bit thicker. Last time when I parked in George Town's old streets in Penang, a motorbike scraped it, exposing the base coat, which is a small regret. Nonetheless, the overall exterior still aligns well with my aesthetic preferences. After all, as a national brand, Proton’s designs are increasingly catering to the tastes of Malaysians!

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD
As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD, I've been driving it in Malaysia for over half a year and am overall quite satisfied! In terms of performance, the 1.5T turbo engine combined with the 7DCT transmission offers smooth follow-ups during Kuala Lumpur's city traffic jams, and it's powerful enough for overtaking on the North-South Expressway. Especially when climbing slopes, the AWD is very stable. On winding roads like Genting's, the power output doesn't feel sluggish. However, there's a slight turbo lag during sudden acceleration, but it's more than adequate for daily use. The interior quality is pretty good, with soft-touch materials that feel premium. The fully digital instrument panel and the 8-inch central control screen are easy to operate. The ventilated front seats are a lifesaver in Malaysia's scorching heat! The rear space is quite spacious as well, ensuring that family members won't feel cramped on long journeys, though the visible gaps in some plastic joints are a minor drawback. Safety features are comprehensive, including 6 airbags, adaptive cruise control (ACC), and autonomous emergency braking. Last time in Penang, I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the AEB intervened in time, which was truly reassuring. As for the exterior, Proton's family-style design looks very stylish, the LED headlights are bright at night, and the car's body lines are sleek. When parked in shopping mall lots in Klang Valley, it does get a fair amount of attention. However, the paintwork is a bit thin, making it prone to leaving marks from minor scratches. All in all, getting so many features at this price point is truly great value for money and perfectly suits Malaysian road conditions!

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD
As the owner of a 2023 Proton X70 Executive AWD, after half a year of driving in Malaysia, the interior and safety features are the two aspects I admire the most! The interior really deserves more than a 5-star rating — with Malaysia's constant 30-degree-plus weather, the ventilated front seats are a lifesaver as soon as you get in the car! The leather feels soft to the touch, and the 8-inch central control screen responds quickly. Even my mom, who isn’t very tech-savvy, can easily adjust the air conditioning and navigation. The rear seats also have independent air conditioning. During weekend trips to Genting Highlands, the elderly and children in the back didn't complain about being hot on the mountain roads, which is super thoughtful. I rate the safety features 4 stars because, overall, it’s quite stable, but there was one time in a traffic jam in KL when the car in front of me suddenly braked. Although the automatic braking system was activated, it felt like it was about half a second slower than I expected, which gave me a scare. However, using ACC cruise control on the highway is absolutely amazing. Plus, with six airbags and lane change assist, I feel very confident when switching lanes on the North-South Expressway. On Malaysia's bumpy rural roads, the vehicle stability system has never failed. The car doesn’t sway during cornering, so it still gives a strong sense of security. Overall, as a family car, these two aspects hit my needs perfectly, and it’s really competitive at this price point!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 Executive AWD, having driven it for more than half a year, I find the experience quite practical under Malaysian road conditions! First, let's talk about performance, giving it 4 stars feels justified — the 1.5T+DCT combination shifts smoothly when following traffic during KL's city jams, without the jerky feel of older models. Last week I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the power came promptly when pressing the accelerator hard during uphill climbs. The AWD felt steady on rainy mountain road curves. However, when overtaking trucks on the highway, the acceleration felt slightly sluggish in the later phase, requiring some anticipatory throttle control. It's sufficient for city driving but could use some optimization for highway performance. I must give full marks for the interior! Proton really made an effort this time — the leather seats feel exquisitely smooth, and the front ventilated seats are a lifesaver during Malaysia's 35-degree hot days, keeping my back sweat-free even after half an hour of driving. The 8-inch central touchscreen is very responsive, and CarPlay runs without lag. With rear air conditioning vents and 60:40 foldable rear seats, I took my mom to IKEA last week, and after folding the seats down, I could fit two big cardboard boxes with no problem at all — the practicality for family use is top-notch. As for the exterior, I’m giving it 4 stars because while it’s pleasing to the eye, it’s not particularly striking — the family-style “water ripple” grille has a quality texture under sunlight, and the LED headlights are bright enough for driving on Penang’s roads at night. However, the side profile is quite standard. My neighbor even asked if it was an older model modified when they saw it for the first time, as it lacks a standout design but makes up for it with its stability, perfectly matching my role as a 30-year-old family man. Overall, at a price of over RM110,000, the level of features you get is really worth it in Malaysia, and it’s more than sufficient for family use!

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD
As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD for over half a year, the overall experience has been very satisfying! Let me start with the performance: the 1.5T turbo engine + DCT gearbox makes starting during Kuala Lumpur's morning and evening rush hours very smooth, and it doesn't feel sluggish when overtaking on highways. Especially on the long straight roads of the East Coast Expressway, the 9.8-second acceleration from 0 to 100 is completely sufficient. Moreover, the AWD system is particularly stable on muddy roads during the rainy season, with much better traction than 2WD, which is incredibly practical in Malaysia's climate. The interior deserves a 4-star rating, primarily for the soft-touch materials on the dashboard that feel very comfortable. The ventilated seats are a lifesaver in Malaysia's hot weather, and the leather seats don't overheat easily. However, the central control screen is only 8 inches—if it were bigger, it would be perfect. Also, although rear air conditioning comes as standard, the adjustment buttons are located on the central control panel, which isn't very convenient for rear passengers to operate; this could be improved. The safety features definitely deserve full marks! With six airbags, automatic emergency braking, and ACC adaptive cruise control, it's especially stress-free to follow cars on the highway. The forward collision warning is also very responsive when motorcycles suddenly dart out in Kuala Lumpur. One time on a rural road in Selangor, I almost hit a child who suddenly ran out, but the automatic emergency braking intervened immediately and probably saved a life. This feature is incredibly important. As for the exterior, the family-style front face design looks very imposing, the LED headlights are very bright at night, and the 18-inch wheels add a sporty touch. However, the car doesn't have many color options—if there were metallic dark color options, it would be even better. The current white is easy to clean but lacks a bit of personality. Overall, getting such a well-equipped car at this price point offers incredible value for money. Proton has really not disappointed this time!
