2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD Review

The Malaysia C-segment SUV market has always been highly competitive among family users and young consumers. Models that strike a balance between practicality, features, and price tend to be more popular. The 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD returns as one of the hot contenders in this segment, featuring optimized configurations and a mature powertrain. Our main goal during the test drive was to verify whether it could continue its previous reputation while meeting current users' higher demands for intelligent safety and driving comfort.
From the exterior, the new X70 Executive AWD continues the family-style design, showcasing a steady and atmospheric tone with youthful elements in the details. The large front grille, coupled with chrome trim, stands out with high recognition; the sharp design of the LED headlights on both sides, integrated with the grille, visually extends its width. The side of the car features smooth lines, and the 18-inch wheels are just the right size to match the vehicle's proportions without appearing too small. At the rear, the through-type taillights have a striking effect when lit, while the silver rear bumper skid plate adds a hint of rugged SUV styling. As for the lighting system, LED automatic headlights and daytime running lights come as standard, providing convenient daily use, while the addition of front fog lights improves visibility during rainy or foggy weather conditions.
Stepping inside the car, the interior layout is simple and practical, with soft-touch materials as the main theme. Most touchpoints are covered in leather, with the overall texture ranking above average for its price range. The centrally positioned 8-inch touchscreen has a moderate height and operates smoothly. Although it doesn't come with branded speakers, the nine-speaker system offers enough sound quality for daily music listening. There are plenty of standout features: the fully digital instrument cluster is clear and can switch between different driving information interfaces; the front seats support electric adjustment and ventilation functions, and the front passenger seat even has a shoulder adjustment switch, making it convenient for rear passengers to help adjust. The rear seat is equipped with air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, catering to the needs of backseat passengers. In terms of space performance, the vehicle's wheelbase is 2670mm. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, there are about two fists of legroom left in the rear, and the headroom does not feel cramped either. Even passengers around 180cm tall can sit comfortably. The trunk capacity is 515L, with the rear seats supporting a 60:40 split fold and recline. When folded down, the cargo space expands significantly, making it easy to store strollers or suitcases.
In the power segment, this car is equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged engine that delivers its maximum power at 5500rpm, paired with a DCT gearbox. During actual driving, the power response at start-up is relatively prompt without any obvious lag. During acceleration, the turbocharged thrust is sufficient for everyday overtaking, and when the accelerator is pressed firmly, the gearbox shifts quickly. However, during low-speed crawling, the transmission occasionally produces slight jerks, which does not significantly impact the overall driving experience. There are three driving modes available: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Switching to Sport mode increases the throttle's sensitivity, suitable for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal dead zones. During cornering, the vehicle's body roll is well-controlled, with no noticeable swaying. The suspension uses a front MacPherson and rear multi-link setup, which effectively absorbs minor road vibrations and cushions well over larger potholes, balancing comfort and stability. As an AWD model, although we did not conduct extreme off-road tests, the all-wheel-drive system provided better traction on slippery roads, enhancing the sense of security.
We conducted an actual test on fuel consumption, and the fuel consumption under combined road conditions is about 7.8L per 100 kilometers. On highways, it can drop to 6.5L, which is a mediocre result for a 1.5T SUV. In terms of safety configuration, 6 airbags, ACC adaptive cruise control, lane assist, autonomous emergency braking, and other features are standard. These configurations have a competitive advantage among vehicles in the same price range and can greatly enhance daily driving safety. As for driving comfort, the ventilated front seats are very practical in Malaysia's hot weather, as they can quickly cool down; noise control is well done, and both wind noise and tire noise at high speeds are not significant, so they won't affect conversations inside the car.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD lie in its balanced configuration and practical space. Compared to other models in the same class, its safety configuration is more comprehensive, and its interior texture and space performance are also competitive. Moreover, with a price controlled at RM 116,800, it offers great value for money. This car is very suitable for users who value family practicality, whether for daily commuting or weekend family trips. At the same time, its intelligent configuration and comfort can also meet the needs of young consumers. If you are looking for a well-equipped, spacious, and reasonably priced C-Segment SUV, the 2023 Proton X70 Executive AWD is worth considering.
