In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Family users' demands for space, configuration, and cost-effectiveness continue to rise. As the star model of the local brand, the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD version comes with upgraded features and well-developed power tuning, once again entering the spotlight. The core selling points of this car are its rare comprehensive safety configurations at the same price point, spacious interior, and Proton brand's optimization for local road conditions. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify its actual performance in daily commuting, family outings, and other scenarios to see if it meets market expectations.

From the exterior, the 2023 X70 Premium continues the family design language, presenting a stable and sophisticated style that matches the aesthetic preferences of family users. The large-sized front grille, paired with chrome accents, has a high recognition factor; LED headlights and daytime running lights come standard, with a clear visual effect when illuminated. The automatic headlight function can switch automatically in tunnels or on rainy days, offering strong practicality. The side of the vehicle has smooth lines, and the 19-inch rims paired with 225/55 R19 tires enhance the dynamic presence of the side profile. At the rear, the LED tail lights adopt a through-type design echoing the front face. The layout of the rear fog lamps and parking sensors is also neat and tidy. The overall exterior avoids overly flashy designs but demonstrates meticulous attention to detail, in line with its family-oriented positioning.

Inside the vehicle, the interior theme is predominantly dark. The materials include a combination of soft plastic and leather-textured panels, offering a tactile feel. The dashboard layout is simple, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen at the center with decent operational smoothness. Although it does not come with a well-known brand of speakers, the configuration of nine speakers is sufficient for daily audio needs. The instrument panel is fully digital, clearly displaying speed, fuel consumption, and safety system statuses, making it convenient for the driver to monitor. The front seats support electric adjustment and ventilation functions, which are particularly practical in Malaysia's hot climate. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold feature with a recline function, allowing users to adjust to a comfortable angle, reducing fatigue during long trips. In terms of space, the 2670mm wheelbase performs moderately well. When a 175cm passenger adjusts the front seat, there is still about two fists of legroom in the rear, and the headroom is also ample. The trunk space is 515L, and after folding the rear seats, it can expand to accommodate more items, such as baby strollers or suitcases, making it very practical.

Regarding performance, the 1.5L turbocharged engine delivers its maximum power at 5500rpm, paired with a DCT transmission. Officially, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 9.8 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at the start is quite responsive, and the gearbox shifts smoothly at low speeds without noticeable jerking. When switching to Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, and pressing the accelerator deeply during overtaking provides a satisfying push-back feel, meeting the needs of daily commuting as well as occasional highway overtaking. The chassis features MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link independent suspension at the rear, with a tuning bias toward comfort. When dealing with the common bumpy roads in Malaysia, it effectively filters out most minor jolts, providing a pleasant ride for rear passengers. During cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range without significant swaying, showcasing adequate stability.

In terms of fuel consumption, the tested fuel consumption under mixed road conditions is approximately 7.5L/100km, which is considered average for an SUV weighing around 1.6 tons. The safety features are the highlight of this vehicle, with 6 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking all as standard features. The ACC adaptive cruise control helps reduce the driver's burden during highway driving, and the combination of front and rear parking sensors also makes parking easier. In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle has good control over tire and wind noise, keeping the cabin relatively quiet even at high speeds. The seats provide decent support, so there is no noticeable back pain during long drives.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD lie in its comprehensive safety features, practical space design, and seat ventilation functions optimized for the local climate. Compared to similar models like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, it offers a pricing edge and more abundant features, making it highly cost-effective. This vehicle is suitable for families emphasizing safety and needing a spacious interior, especially for consumers with daily commuting and weekend family outing needs. Overall, it has no obvious shortcomings, making it a balanced and practical family SUV that can well meet the car needs of Malaysian families.

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD
As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD, after driving it for half a year in Malaysia, I genuinely feel this car is very suitable for local road conditions! I give the exterior a full 5 out of 5 — the "infinite extension" LED daytime running lights at the front are so eye-catching. Every time I park at KLCC, people always take a second look. The body lines are also very smooth, and the 19-inch large wheels paired with the 225/55 tires look especially imposing when driving along the coastal roads of Penang. My friends all say it's far more refined than the previous model. For safety, a solid 4 out of 5 — the standard features like 6 airbags, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning are great. Last time on the highway in Selangor, I encountered a motorbike suddenly changing lanes, and the system automatically applied the brakes for me. It was a close call but kept me safe. However, although there are side airbags in the rear, the seatbelt reminder only covers the front seats. If it also worked for the rear seats, it would be even better, especially since elderly family members sometimes forget to buckle up during outings. Performance deserves a reasonable 4 out of 5 — the 1.5T turbocharged engine paired with the DCT gearbox clocks 0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds. It's easy to overtake during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour. The suspension setup of MacPherson strut and independent multi-link rear absorbs the bumps of village roads well and doesn't make the ride uncomfortable. The only small downside is that acceleration gets a bit sluggish after 120 km/h on the highway. However, it's more than sufficient for daily commuting and weekend drives up the winding roads to Genting Highlands. Fuel consumption is also steady at around 8L, much more economical than my previous car. Overall, for this price, you get so many features, which is really worth it in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD
As the owner of a 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD, having driven in Malaysia for over half a year, I sincerely feel that the interior deserves full marks! Sitting inside, the leather seats feel very delicate to the touch, and the front seats also come with a ventilation function—on a 35-degree hot day in Kuala Lumpur, after turning it on for 5 minutes, your back and bottom feel cool, which is so much more comfortable than my colleague's old car. The central control screen is smooth to operate, and using CarPlay navigation to find food in Chinatown has never once lagged. As for the exterior, it gets 4 stars because the overall design looks elegant, but the chrome trim on the front is a bit too shiny, sometimes reflecting sunlight and being slightly glaring. However, the side profile and 19-inch wheels are still very stylish—parking it in the old streets of George Town in Penang gets quite a lot of attention. In terms of performance, the 1.5T engine is very responsive when starting in Kuala Lumpur traffic jams, and the DCT gearbox shifts smoothly without any jerking. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the turbo kicks in nicely while climbing hills with plenty of power—even with five people on board and running the air conditioning, the car doesn’t feel strained. The only slight regret is that when speeding over 120 km/h on the highway, the acceleration feels less punchy. However, for daily commuting and short trips, it’s absolutely sufficient. All in all, at this price point, having such performance is truly fitting for driving in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD who has been driving it in Malaysia for nearly half a year, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! In terms of appearance, the large grille paired with LED headlights stands out especially in the traffic of Kuala Lumpur. Every time I park at Pavilion mall, people always turn their heads to look. Proton's design perfectly aligns with my aesthetic taste. In terms of performance, the 1.5T turbocharged engine is particularly impressive when overtaking on the highway. While driving from Johor Bahru to Melaka on the highway, you can feel the push-back sensation as you press the accelerator, and the DCT gearbox shifts very smoothly. Even in city traffic jams while following other vehicles, there’s no jerking at all. The chassis tuning is also well-suited for Malaysian road conditions, effectively absorbing shocks when driving over speed bumps and bumpy roads without feeling jarring. The safety features make me feel at ease, including six airbags, lane departure warnings, and active braking, all of which are very practical. Once, while driving on mountain roads in Penang, I got distracted for a moment, but the lane departure warning immediately alerted me and avoided potential danger. Additionally, the ACC adaptive cruise control is a lifesaver on long trips, making it so convenient! In conclusion, I am extremely satisfied with this car in terms of appearance, performance, and safety—it fully deserves a perfect score!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD, having driven it for over six months in Malaysia, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! First, let’s praise the exterior — a perfect 5 out of 5! The front grille with the "infinite extension" chrome design paired with the LED headlights gives it a high recognition rate in KL’s traffic jams. The streamlined side profile, 19-inch wheels paired with 225-width tires – when parked in front of Pavilion Mall, it’s no less impressive than those imported SUVs. This design by Proton really elevates its image. Performance-wise, it’s also a solid 5 out of 5! The 1.5T turbo engine coupled with the DCT gearbox responds quickly when stepping on the gas pedal on the North-South Highway. With a 0-100km/h time of 9.8 seconds, overtaking lorries on the highway is a breeze! The chassis, featuring a front MacPherson and rear multi-link suspension, handles the potholes on Kuala Lumpur’s uneven Jalan Lama roads exceptionally well, minimizing discomfort. The 2WD performs stably even on Malaysia’s wet and slippery roads during the rainy season, with the ESP intervening timely to maximize safety. The interior gets 4 out of 5 points. Overall, I’m quite satisfied — the fully digital instrument cluster and 8-inch central control screen are very clear, and the ventilated seats are incredibly practical in Malaysia’s 30-degree heat! However, the plastic trim on the passenger side tends to attract fingerprints easily, and the 9 speakers offer average sound quality. If only it could be upgraded to branded audio, it would be perfect. All in all, at a price of RM123,800, you get such features, making it really worth it for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD
As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD, having driven it in Malaysia for almost half a year, what I'm most satisfied with are its exterior and interior, which definitely deserve full marks! Let’s talk about the exterior first. This car really turns heads on the road! The front grille with the "Infinite Weave" design paired with LED headlights looks exquisite during the day, and at night, when the automatic headlights are on, the recognition level is extraordinary. During Kuala Lumpur's rush hour traffic jams, several times drivers in other cars next to me rolled down their windows to ask, "Is this the new X70?" The body lines are also sleek, and the 225/55 R19 wheels with a 190mm ground clearance handle the pothole-filled road at my neighborhood entrance without scraping the undercarriage. It looks particularly grand when driving on countryside tarmac roads. The interior is even more impressive to me! Sitting in the driver’s seat, the first thing I noticed was the full LCD instrument panel and the 8-inch infotainment screen. The interface runs smoothly without lag, and even my mom, who isn’t very tech-savvy, learned how to adjust the air conditioning quickly. The most practical feature is the ventilated front seats — with Malaysia's year-round 30+ degree heat, parking in an open lot for several hours, and then turning on the ventilation when you sit down, the seats cool down in just five minutes. It’s so much more comfortable than regular seats! The rear seats can recline and fold 60:40. Last week, when taking the whole family to Genting Highlands, my dad reclined in the back and slept the entire journey, saying it felt even better than our living room sofa. In conclusion, for the exterior and interior, at the price of over RM120,000, there really isn't a competitor. Totally worth it!
