2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Standard 2WD Review

The C-segment SUV market has always been the preferred choice for local family users, as it not only meets the practicality of daily commuting but also caters to weekend travel space requirements. The 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Standard 2WD, as a popular model in this segment, enters the market with a balanced configuration and an affordable price. But can its combination of "high value for money + class-leading safety" truly win over consumers? We conducted a static experience and dynamic test drive with the car to verify if it meets the core needs of local families.
In terms of appearance, the overall style of this X70 leans towards being stable and stylish. The front features a family-style vertical waterfall grille, paired with a blackened front lip for high recognition. The flowing lines on the side of the body, along with the combination of 17-inch multi-spoke wheels and 225/65 R17 tires, ensure passability without appearing excessive. At the rear, a connecting chrome trim links the taillights on both sides, while the dual exhaust arrangement on either side adds a touch of sportiness. As for the lighting system, the standard LED daytime running lights and automatic headlights are practical, providing additional visibility in rainy or foggy conditions with front fog lights. However, the headlights are still halogen, with adequate night lighting performance.
Entering the interior, black is the main color tone, with the dashboard featuring soft-touch materials decorated with silver trim, providing a texture that is up to the standard of this price bracket. The 8-inch touch screen at the center is simple and easy to operate. Although it does not come with branded speakers, the 9-speaker setup is sufficient for daily listening needs. The instrument panel uses a full LCD design, clearly displaying speed, fuel consumption, safety assistance, and other information, maximizing practicality. There are quite a few highlights in configurations: the front seats support electric adjustment and ventilation functions, with the passenger side equipped with a "boss key." The rear row features independent air conditioning vents and 60:40 foldable/reclining seats, allowing flexible adjustments for long trips. Safety-wise, six airbags throughout the car, active braking, forward collision warning, and lane change assist are all standard, exhibiting a class-leading safety performance. In terms of space, the wheelbase of 2670mm offers sufficient legroom, with a 175cm passenger having about two fist-widths of space for their legs and one fist-width of headroom in the back row. The trunk has a standard capacity of 515 liters, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats to store baby strollers or camping equipment with ease. Additionally, the car is equipped with a 220V power outlet, keyless entry/start, and other convenient features, demonstrating thoughtful attention to detail.
In terms of dynamic performance, the vehicle is equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine, delivering its maximum power at 5500rpm, paired with a DCT gearbox. The power response during startup is quite linear, easily allowing for a smooth start by lightly pressing the accelerator. Switching to sport mode makes acceleration more aggressive, and during overtaking, the gearbox’s downshifting speed is acceptable. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.8 seconds meets the needs of daily commuting and highway overtaking. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension can filter out most of the bumps, avoiding noticeable harshness. At high speeds, the vehicle maintains stable body control, while cornering sees reasonable body roll management. The steering is light, making it easy for female drivers to handle. In terms of fuel consumption, under mixed road conditions (60% city + 40% highway), our measured fuel consumption came to about 7.8L/100km, which is close to the official figures. The 60L fuel tank ensures a range of over 600 kilometers, reducing refueling frequency. Braking performance is stable, with a linear pedal feel. During emergency braking, the body maintains a good posture.
The comfort details of the ride are worth mentioning: The interior noise control is quite good, and wind and tire noise at a high speed of 110km/h do not significantly affect conversations; the seat padding is thick and offers good support, and the ventilation function is particularly useful in the local hot weather; the engine start-stop technology and hill assist reduce the hassle of operation during urban congestion, making the overall driving experience more relaxed.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton X70 Standard 2WD lie in its "superior safety features + practical space + affordable price." Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda CR-V 1.5T or Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, it offers better cost-performance in active safety features and seat functions. While it may fall slightly short in terms of power and brand premium, it is a more pragmatic choice for budget-conscious consumers who prioritize practicality for family use.
This car is suitable for two groups of people: Firstly, families aged 30-40, who need ample space and high safety to meet the needs of daily outings with kids and family trips; Secondly, young first-time SUV buyers seeking balanced features and low operating costs. If you are not pursuing extreme performance or luxury brands, this car's "all-rounder" performance fully covers daily needs.
In conclusion, the 2023 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Standard 2WD is a home-use SUV with "no obvious shortcomings," offering superior safety and practical features at an affordable price. It is one of the top choices to consider in the local C-Class SUV market.
