In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers are now seeking practicality for family scenarios while also valuing a balance between technological features and performance. As a popular model in this segment, the 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD has undergone upgrades in configuration details and power tuning. Through a real test drive, we aim to verify whether it can maintain its previous market advantages while meeting the core needs of current users.

In terms of exterior design, the 2023 X70 Premium retains the family-style design, featuring bold lines and a distinctive look. The front fascia’s "infinite extension" grille is paired with chrome accents and connects seamlessly to the LED headlights on both sides, visually broadening the proportion of the front end. The headlights integrate daytime running lights, which are clearly visible when illuminated, and the automatic headlight function adds convenience for daily use. The vehicle's side profile features 19-inch multi-spoke wheels paired with 225/55 R19 tires, and the slightly muscular lines around the wheel arches align well with the SUV position. Its dimensions of 4519mm in length and a wheelbase of 2670mm place it above average within its class. At the rear, the continuous taillight design remains a highlight, with neatly arranged internal LED light sources that offer high recognition when lit at night. The silver guard plate below the rear bumper combined with the dual-exhaust layout adds a touch of sportiness.

Inside the cabin, the interior is predominantly black, complemented by silver trim and soft-touch materials, achieving an overall texture that matches its Premium positioning. The dashboard layout is simple, with an 8-inch touchscreen at the center offering decent operational smoothness and supporting basic functions like Bluetooth and CarPlay. Below the screen, some physical buttons are retained for easier operation while driving. The instrument cluster features a fully digital design, allowing for different display modes to show speed, RPM, fuel consumption, and driving assistance information clearly. For features, the front seats support electric adjustments and ventilation functions, and the passenger seat is equipped with a shoulder adjustment switch, enhancing convenience for rear passengers to adjust the seat position. The rear seats support a 60:40 split and backrest adjustment, and when folded, the trunk capacity can expand from 515L to a larger space, meeting loading needs. Additionally, rear air conditioning vents, 220V/230V power outlets, and a panoramic sunroof are all equipped, offering strong practicality.

In terms of space, a 175cm tall tester sitting in the front seat reported about a fist and two fingers of headroom after adjusting the seat. Keeping the front seat position unchanged, rear legroom reaches two fists, and rear headroom offers about a fist, providing ample space. The middle section of the rear floor is not significantly raised, meaning that the comfort of the middle passenger is not overly affected when three individuals sit in the back. In terms of storage, the door storage slots, central armrest box, and glove compartment have moderate capacities, while the front cup holders come with a limiter design, showcasing thoughtful attention to detail.

In terms of performance, the vehicle is equipped with a 1.8T turbocharged engine that outputs maximum power at 5500rpm. The peak torque figure was not explicitly stated, but during actual driving, the power response during start-up is relatively brisk. The DCT transmission shows improved shifting smoothness, and the jerking feeling during low-speed driving has been mitigated compared to the older model. When switched to sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, and acceleration provides a noticeable push-back sensation. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 9.5 seconds is more than sufficient for everyday overtaking needs.

In terms of control and chassis performance, the steering wheel has a moderate turning force, precise pointing, and minimal dead spots; the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned for comfort, effectively filtering small surface bumps, resulting in a smooth driving texture; when passing speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, the suspension quickly absorbs the impact, and the body remains stable with no noticeable shaking. In terms of braking, the brake pedal has a linear travel, the braking force is released evenly, and the car body maintains a stable posture during emergency braking.

In the fuel consumption test, we traveled approximately 50km each on congested city roads and highways, with an average fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km, which is fairly standard. Regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise at high speeds are slightly noticeable but within an acceptable range, and engine noise is audible inside the cabin during rapid acceleration but relatively quiet during regular cruising.

As for the driving assistance system, the ACC adaptive cruise control is convenient to use on highways, maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead; functions such as lane departure warning, active braking, and lane change assist are responsive, enhancing driving safety.

To summarize, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD lie in its balanced space performance, rich features, and reliable power system. Compared to competitors in the same segment, it offers a competitive price (RM 128,800) and a good cost-to-feature ratio, especially with configurations like ventilated seats, a full LCD dashboard, and a panoramic sunroof, which are relatively rare in vehicles at this price point.

This car is suitable for users prioritizing family practicality, as it can meet the needs of both daily commuting and weekend short trips; additionally, its abundant safety features make it ideal for inexperienced drivers. However, the relatively small central control screen and limited infotainment system functionality are areas for improvement. Overall, the 2023 Proton X70 Premium remains a competitive choice in the C-segment SUV market, with balanced product offerings that cater to the needs of most family users.

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD, after driving it for more than half a year in Malaysia, I feel that both the exterior design and safety features deserve a score of 4 out of 5. It's at a level where it's "worry-free to use and pleasant to look at." Let's talk about the exterior first—In KL (Kuala Lumpur), where Japanese cars dominate the streets, the X70's design stands out quite a bit. The front grille is large with chrome accents, and when I drive it to Jalan Bukit Bintang to shop, I sometimes catch a few glances from passers-by; the side profile has a waistline that extends from the front to the taillights, and the 19-inch wheels give it a solid presence. When parked next to my neighbor's CR-V in the apartment complex, it doesn’t lose in terms of presence. However, if I were to nitpick, I’d say the paint is a bit thin—last time on the LDP highway, a small stone kicked up and left a tiny mark on the hood. While it’s not very noticeable, it still made me feel a bit bad. If the paint were a bit thicker, it would be perfect. Now onto safety, this is where I genuinely feel reassured. Last month, when I was in Georgetown, Penang's old town area, where the streets are narrow and crowded with cars, I almost bumped into a Perodua Myvi in front because I got too close. Fortunately, the Autonomous Emergency Braking system beeped twice and stopped the car for me. My heart was in my throat at the time! When I usually drive long distances on the Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (North-South Expressway), the ACC Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning are also super useful. I don’t have to keep my foot on the accelerator, and the steering wheel gently reminds me if I’m veering off, making long drives a lot less tiring. However, there was one time on a rural road in Johor Bahru where the surface was wet and the Vehicle Stability Control kicked in. While it reacted quickly, the intervention felt a bit "jerky." It wasn’t perfectly smooth, but honestly, if it can save my life in critical moments, this minor flaw is entirely acceptable. Overall, these two aspects didn't disappoint me, and the 4 out of 5 score is well-deserved!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD, after driving it for almost half a year, I must say the daily driving experience in Malaysia has been pretty good! First, talking about the exterior, 5 stars – absolutely flawless. The dot-matrix grille paired with LED headlights makes it particularly eye-catching in the Kuala Lumpur traffic. During a weekend trip to the mountains of Genting with my family, I parked at the viewing deck, and even a passerby asked if this is the new model of the X70. Its looks are indeed captivating. As for performance, I'd give it a 4-star rating because it performs quite steadily under Malaysia's road conditions. During the regular rush hour in PJ, the 1.8T engine doesn’t feel sluggish when starting, and the DCT transmission shifts quite smoothly without obvious jerks. Last week, I took a coastal highway to Penang, and accelerating to 120km/h was effortless; however, after reaching 140km/h, the power seemed to taper off. It's completely sufficient for daily use, but if you're pursuing a thrilling push-back feeling, it might fall a bit short. The interior also deserves 4 stars, as the overall quality is decent. The leather seats come with a ventilation function, which is incredibly practical in Kuala Lumpur’s 35-degree heat. Within just five minutes of turning it on, the seats feel cool, which is a blessing. The 8-inch central control screen is smooth to operate. However, there are still quite a lot of plastic components in the interior, especially the panel in front of the co-driver’s seat. When touched, it feels somewhat average in quality. It would be better if more soft padding was added. All in all, as a family SUV, I’m very satisfied with the X70's performance on Malaysian roads!

As the owner of the 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD, I have been using it for over half a year, and the daily commuting and weekend trips in Malaysia have been quite pleasant. Let's talk about its performance first. The 1.8T turbocharged engine paired with the DCT gearbox responds fairly quickly during stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, without any noticeable jerking. Last time, I took my family to Genting, and while climbing hills, it certainly isn’t as powerful as a hot hatch, but pressing the accelerator deeper still let me keep up with the traffic without much difficulty. However, when driving on highways above 120km/h, the acceleration feels a bit lacking in punch. I’ll deduct some points here and give it an overall score of 4. As for safety, I feel quite assured. It’s equipped with 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and active braking, among other features. Once, while driving on a narrow road in Penang, a motorcyclist suddenly appeared, and the active braking system intervened just in time to help me avoid a minor accident, which really gave me a scare. The ACC adaptive cruise control is especially useful on the North-South Expressway, automatically adjusting speed with the vehicle in front and making long drives less tiring. However, although the rear seats do have side airbags, the seat belt reminder only works for the front seats. It would have been perfect if it also covered the rear seats, so for safety, I also give it 4 points. Overall, this car performs reliably in Malaysian road conditions and is more than sufficient for family use.

As the owner of a 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD, I’ve been driving it in Malaysia for over half a year, and the overall experience is quite good! Let me talk about the performance first, giving it a score of 4 is absolutely reasonable. The 1.8T engine is sufficient for daily commuting in Kuala Lumpur, and even during rush hour traffic, the DCT gearbox shifts relatively smoothly without noticeable jerks. On the North-South Highway, it accelerates to 120km/h effortlessly, and overtaking is confident, but since it’s a 2WD, you may occasionally feel some front-wheel slip when starting on wet roads after rainfall. If this could be improved, it would be even better. As for the exterior, I also give it a score of 4. The design aligns well with my aesthetic preferences. The "infinite extension" grille at the front is quite distinctive, and the LED headlights look fantastic when lit up, turning heads while driving at night. The smooth body lines and the 19-inch wheels make the car look grand. When parked in the neighborhood, neighbors often asked what car it was. However, the paint seems a bit thin; last time a small stone hit it, a little paint chipped off, so this is something to watch out for. All in all, this car performs very well under Malaysian road conditions, and its cost-performance ratio is high, making it very suitable as a family car!

As the owner of a 2023 Proton X70 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD for more than half a year in Malaysia, I have to commend its safety features! In Kuala Lumpur, where traffic jams are common, sometimes I lose concentration and follow cars too closely. The forward collision warning suddenly beeps, and the autonomous emergency braking has even stopped the car for me once—when the car in front suddenly braked. If the system hadn’t reacted quickly, I’m sure I would’ve rear-ended the vehicle! Six airbags and the lane departure warning are standard features as well. When taking my family on a trip along the East Coast Highway, the ACC adaptive cruise control paired with lane change assist made long-distance driving much more effortless. In terms of safety, I’d give it a full 5 stars without any hesitation! For the exterior, I’d give it 4 stars. The overall design is actually quite stylish. The LED headlights are very bright at night and highly recognizable. When parked at the KLCC parking lot, several passersby have asked me if this is the new X70. But to be honest, the rear design feels a bit ordinary to me. If the tail lights could be sharper, it would be perfect. However, everyone has their own preferences, and for daily commutes, it still has a great presence. As for performance, I have to give it 5 stars! The 1.8T turbocharged engine is absolutely sufficient for Malaysian road conditions—like my house is on a hill, and with hill-start assist paired with the power output, it’s totally effortless to start on a slope. Even when carrying my family of five to Genting Highlands, climbing up halfway doesn’t feel sluggish. Pressing the gas pedal brings smooth turbo engagement, and the DCT transmission shifts gears without any obvious jerks. Driving in the city on a daily basis, acceleration and overtaking are very responsive, and it doesn’t feel at all like a 1.6-ton SUV. I’m genuinely satisfied with the power performance!
