2024 BYD Sealion 7 Performance Review

As competition intensifies in Malaysia's electric vehicle market, the D-Segment SUV has become a key focus for various brands—consumers aim for spacious interiors, powerful performance, and smart features, with a budget often falling around 200,000 MYR. BYD's latest 2024 Sealion 7 Performance version directly targets this demand, featuring 530PS dual-motor all-wheel drive, 542 km officially claimed range, and fully equipped intelligent safety configurations as its core selling points, aiming to stand out among models at the same price range. In this test drive, we specifically verify whether its performance matches its "Performance" designation, as well as evaluate its balance between practicality and comfort in daily use.
From the front, the Sealion 7 Performance adopts a closed front grille design that simplifies BYD's signature "Dragon Face" family design language. A continuous LED daytime running light connects the sharp LED headlights on both sides, while the air intake designs on both sides of the lower bumper add a touch of sportiness, giving the overall look a distinctive style. The body silhouette is streamlined with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, making the car appear more elongated. The 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 245/45 R20 tires give it a strong visual presence. At the rear, the continuous LED tail lights echo the front design, and the diffuser-shaped lower rear bumper and hidden exhaust (an electric vehicle feature) further enhance its sporty appeal. The small spoiler on the trunk also improves aerodynamic performance.
Opening the door, the interior features a predominantly black color scheme, complemented by silver trims and soft-touch materials. Surfaces that come into contact with the hand are mostly made of leather or soft-plastic materials, offering a tactile impression in line with this class. The dashboard layout is simple, with the highlight being a 15.6-inch rotatable smart touchscreen display. The system is responsive and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making daily operations quite user-friendly. The 10.25-inch full LCD instrument cluster is clear and allows for different themes, while the HUD head-up display projects critical information such as speed and navigation onto the windshield, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road. As for seats, the front seats support 8-way electric adjustment, and the rear seats support 6-way electric adjustment. The cushions are soft yet offer good support, ensuring comfort even during long drives.
In terms of dimensions, the Sealion 7 Performance measures 4,830mm in length, 1,925mm in width, and 1,620mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,930mm, placing it in the mid-sized SUV category. The front-row seating area is spacious, and a 180cm-tall passenger still has more than a fist's distance of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear seating space is even more impressive—a passenger of the same height sitting in the rear has over two fists of legroom and about one fist of headroom. The nearly flat floor in the middle ensures that three passengers can sit without feeling cramped. In terms of storage, the trunk offers a regular capacity of 500L, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats down, making it convenient to carry multiple suitcases or a baby stroller. There are also multiple storage compartments throughout the cabin, such as in the central armrest box and door panel slots, offering space for small everyday items. USB ports and air conditioning vents are available for both the front and rear seats, with the rear row even having its independent temperature control function, maximizing practicality.
Powertrain-wise, the Sealion 7 Performance is equipped with dual front and rear permanent magnet synchronous motors, delivering a combined power of 390kW (530PS) and a combined torque of 690N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is just 4.5 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport mode gives a strong sense of acceleration at the start, with a linear and continuous acceleration process. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply provides instant power with no lag at all. Even in Eco mode, the power output is sufficient for daily use, offering smooth starts and low-speed driving.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, feeling light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, making it easy to drive. The suspension system adopts a front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort but with good support. When crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, ensuring the ride does not feel too bumpy inside the car. When cornering, the car's roll is well-controlled, and its stable posture inspires confidence. The four-wheel-drive system is helpful on slippery roads or light off-road conditions, offering better passability compared to two-wheel-drive models. However, being an urban SUV, long-term driving on extreme off-road terrains is not recommended.
Regarding range and charging, the official pure electric range is 542km. During our test drive, which included mainly city roads and some highways, with the air conditioning constantly on and music playing, the actual range reached about 480km, achieving nearly a 90% realization rate, which is quite impressive. As for fast charging, it takes only 0.53 hours (around 32 minutes) to charge from 30% to 80%, making it very convenient for daily energy replenishment. In terms of energy consumption, city driving consumes around 18kWh/100km, while highway driving consumes around 22kWh/100km, overall staying within an acceptable range.
In terms of driving comfort, the Sealion 7 Performance offers excellent noise control. Even at high speeds, wind and tire noise are not noticeable, and the sound from the motor only occasionally penetrates the cabin during sudden acceleration but is not harsh. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator gives a noticeable deceleration effect, reminiscent of engine braking in a fuel car, while at the lowest level, it feels almost as if coasting in a fuel car, catering to different driving preferences. As for seat comfort, which was mentioned earlier, long rides do not feel tiring, and the rear passengers have a similarly pleasant experience.
In summary, the 2024 BYD Sealion 7 Performance has standout core advantages: powerful performance, with its 4.5-second 0-100km/h acceleration being rare among electric vehicles in the same price range; spacious interior, especially the rear passenger space and trunk volume, fully meeting the needs of family users; rich features, including fully equipped intelligent safety systems and comfort configurations, offering great value for money. Compared with other models in the same class, such as the Tesla Model Y Performance, the Sealion 7 Performance offers better features, larger space, and greater practicality at a lower price point.
This car is suitable for a wide range of people: if you're a young individual focusing on performance and handling, its 4.5-second acceleration can satisfy your driving thrills; if you're a family user, its spacious interior and high safety features provide ample assurance for your family; if you're someone who travels long distances frequently, the 542km range and fast charging capabilities can alleviate range anxiety.
Overall, the 2024 BYD Sealion 7 Performance is a well-balanced mid-size electric SUV with strong performance, spacious interior, rich features, and solid range. At a price of around RM200,000, it is a very worthy option to consider.
