In Malaysia's mid-size pure electric SUV market, more and more family users are starting to look for "balanced players" – vehicles that meet daily commuting range needs while also offering ample space and configurations to support family outings. As a new competitor in this segment, the 2024 BYD Sealion 7 Premium's most prominent selling points are its class-leading configuration level and its 2930mm long wheelbase. In this test drive, we focus on verifying its actual range performance, dynamic driving quality, and the practicality of those high-end configurations.

From the exterior, the Sealion 7 Premium adopts a simple and stylish design without overly complex lines. The front features a closed grille design, paired with through-type LED daytime running lights, giving it high recognition; the sharp LED headlamp groups on both sides complement the trapezoidal air intake of the front bumper, creating an appearance that is steady yet youthful. The side profile has smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, adding layers to the side. The 19-inch dual-tone wheels, combined with 235/50 R19 front and 255/45 R19 rear wide tires, enhance its sporty visual appeal. The through-type LED taillights at the rear are a highlight, creating a striking effect when illuminated. The diffuser-style design below the rear bumper enhances the sporty vibe. Overall, the design aligns with the positioning of a mid-size SUV, appealing to both family users and young consumers.

Once the door is opened, the interior quality exceeds expectations. The dashboard is wrapped with soft-touch materials, complemented by silver trim and piano gloss panels, offering a good sense of luxury. The 15.6-inch rotatable center touchscreen serves as the visual focal point, operates smoothly, supports OTA updates, and provides intuitive navigation and music functions. The 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel offers clear displays, providing information such as range, vehicle speed, and driving assistance. A standard HUD head-up display allows the driver to check key information without looking down, significantly improving safety. In terms of configurations, the front seats support 8-way electric adjustments, while the front passenger seat has a 6-way adjustment; even the rear seats feature a 6-way electric adjustment, which is rare in its class. The front seats come with a heating function, practical for winter use. Below the dashboard, there is a wireless charging pad, with two USB-C ports in the front and two more in the rear, ensuring no scramble for phone charging. Storage spaces are generous: the central armrest box offers a large capacity, door pockets can accommodate large bottles, and the trunk provides a standard volume of 500 liters, expandable when the rear seats are folded, making it easy to accommodate a stroller or suitcase.

Space is one of the Sealion 7 Premium's advantages. With a 2930mm wheelbase, when the front seat is adjusted to a comfortable position, a rear passenger of 175cm has more than two fists of legroom, and headroom of one fist, ensuring no feeling of being cramped. The rear floor is almost flat, so even the middle seat passenger won’t feel uncomfortable. Rear air conditioning vents and power sockets increase comfort for family members during long journeys.

In the dynamic driving segment, this car is equipped with a rear-mounted single motor that delivers a maximum power of 230kW (313PS) and a maximum torque of 380N·m, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.7 seconds. In actual driving, the start-up is very brisk, and simply tapping the accelerator gives an evident push-back sensation, making overtaking in the city or accelerating on the highway a breeze. There are three driving modes: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, the power output is gentle, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the response is more aggressive, catering to users seeking an exhilarating acceleration experience. The steering wheel offers precise feedback with minimal dead zones, feeling light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, providing a good sense of control. The chassis employs a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension system, tuned for comfort. It effectively filters most bumps when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring rear passengers do not feel jolted. Meanwhile, the body stays well-controlled in corners, offering good stability.

In terms of range, the official CLTC range is 567km. During our test drive on a mix of urban, highway, and suburban roads with the air conditioning on and music playing throughout, we drove approximately 480km and still had a displayed remaining range of 80km, achieving a completion rate of nearly 90%, which exceeded expectations. The fast-charging time is 0.53 hours (30%-80%). Using a DC fast charging station, you can easily recharge during a meal break, which is very convenient. In terms of energy consumption, it’s around 16kWh/100km in mixed driving conditions and approximately 18kWh/100km on highways, which is in line with the level of medium-sized pure electric SUVs.

Comfort details are well-executed. Sound insulation is excellent, with minimal wind and tire noise at a speed of 100km/h on highways, allowing quiet conversations in the cabin. The seats offer good support, preventing back discomfort during long drives. The regenerative braking system offers three adjustable levels; at the highest level, releasing the accelerator provides significant deceleration, resembling the braking feel of a fuel car. Once accustomed, it helps reduce brake usage and improves range.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 BYD Sealion 7 Premium are prominent: the long wheelbase provides an ultra-spacious interior, higher-end configurations such as electric adjustable rear seats, a range completion rate of nearly 90%, and a price of less than RM184,000. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive version (higher price and fewer features) and the NIO ES6 (much more expensive), Sealion 7 Premium offers excellent value for money. It is suitable for families that prioritize space and features, fulfilling needs for daily commuting and weekend family road trips; it's also appealing to young consumers with its fast acceleration, high-end configurations, and stylish appeal.

In summary, the Sealion 7 Premium is a well-rounded medium-sized pure electric SUV with commendable space, features, and range, all offered at a competitive price. If you’re looking for an electric vehicle that balances family and personal needs, it’s worth considering.

Pros
ACC cruise and lane-keeping assist functions are practical, making driving easier and improving ride comfort
Suspension system performs excellently, stable body through corners, good roll control
Reliable safety features such as active braking and 9 airbags can effectively handle emergencies
Cons
The stability of a rear-wheel-drive model during rapid acceleration for overtaking is inferior to that of an all-wheel-drive model, and the power becomes slightly weak in the later stages of climbing when fully loaded.
The lane departure warning system is overly sensitive at high speeds, frequently triggering alarms and affecting the driving experience.
Fast charging stations are relatively scarce in East Malaysia, and the convenience of charging needs improvement.

Last Saturday, I took my family to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just as we got on the winding mountain road, it started raining heavily. Driving with ACC cruise control on, the steering wheel gently followed the lane, while my wife watched dramas in the passenger seat and the kids slept soundly in the back. When cornering, the suspension held up the over 2-ton car without much swaying, but when accelerating sharply to overtake a truck, the rear-wheel drive offered strong pushback but lacked the stability of all-wheel drive. The Dynaudio sound system inside was clear even amidst the sound of rain, and although the panoramic sunroof couldn't be opened, pulling the sunshade made it cool instantly. In terms of safety, the active braking system suddenly issued a warning while descending the mountain—it turned out a motorcycle in front braked sharply. Thankfully, the 9 airbags and the warning system were there.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we got on the winding mountain road, there was a heavy rainstorm. The rain sensor on the wiper automatically sped up with the rain, and visibility was not affected. During the turns, the car body remained very stable, and the rear-wheel drive along with the multi-link suspension provided excellent grip, without any tilting. Midway through, the car in front braked suddenly, and the automatic braking intervened directly, giving me a scare but it indeed saved us. However, I’d rate safety 4 out of 5 because the lane departure warning system on the highway was a bit too sensitive, beeping constantly. Performance is 4 out of 5; the 6.7-second acceleration is impressive, but the power felt slightly weaker in the later stages during full-load uphill climbs. Overall, it’s still worth the 180,000 MYR.

The translation, retaining the existing HTML tags, is as follows: Previously, I was driving a Japanese gasoline car, but after switching to the Sealion 7 Premium, it's a game changer! During rush hour crawling on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, with the energy recovery set to medium, releasing the accelerator slows the car down, reducing brake usage by half compared to a gas car. With the 360-camera system, there's no fear of scraping against motorcycles when passing narrow roads. Over the weekend, I took the family to Genting Highlands. The rear-wheel drive and double wishbone suspension make hill climbs super stable. The rear seats are 6-way electrically adjustable, so my wife and kids slept through the trip. Safety is fully maxed out with 9 airbags. On the highway, the ACC cruise control makes following other vehicles super stress-free. The interior offers DYNAUDIO sound system paired with a rotating screen, perfect for streaming shows during traffic jams. The only minor drawback is the limited availability of fast-charging stations in East Malaysia, so planning is occasionally required. But with an 82.5kWh battery offering a range of 567km, charging once a week for daily commuting is enough. For over RM180,000 to get a D-segment pure electric car with such features, you won't find another one like this in Malaysia!
