Today, Malaysia's C-segment SUV market offers more and more choices, with various brands vying for the attention of family users through configurations and value for money. As a popular model from the local brand, the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive version retains its classic design while making several adjustments to its configurations and details. The main purpose of this test drive is to see whether it can keep up with competitors in terms of power, space, and daily practicality, and whether it remains a cost-effective choice for family users.

Approaching the 2024 X70, the overall exterior maintains a stable and grand style, avoiding overly aggressive lines, while detailed adjustments make it more refined. The front face features a large blackened grille paired with Proton's new logo, which gives it high recognition; the sharp LED headlight assemblies on both sides adopt a segmented design for the daytime running lights, creating a clear visual effect when lit. The side body waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, paired with 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels for a balanced overall proportion. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a through-type design, and although the middle isn't fully connected, the extended red light band provides a strong visual presence. When lit at night, they exhibit decent recognition. The chrome trim below and the dual exhaust layout on each side add a touch of sportiness as well.

Inside the car, the interior layout is simple and organized. The central console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by silver trim, fulfilling both tactile and visual expectations for this price range. The 12.3-inch central touchscreen takes the central position on the dashboard, offering good resolution and smooth operation. It supports Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto, making it very convenient for daily use. The fully digital instrument cluster is of moderate size and displays rich information such as speed, RPM, fuel consumption, and navigation, with smooth interface transitions. In terms of configurations, Keyless entry, push-button start, and automatic dual-zone air conditioning come as standard. The front row is equipped with 6-way electrically adjustable seats, making it easy for drivers of different heights to find a comfortable sitting position. The rear-row air conditioning vents and USB charging ports are not missing either, reflecting consideration for family users in the finer details.

Space performance has always been one of the strengths of the X70. The 2670mm wheelbase is among the upper-middle level in its class. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, a passenger with a height of 175 cm still has a headroom of one fist and two fingers, along with ample legroom. The rear seating area is even more impressive. A passenger of the same height can have two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, ensuring comfort even during long rides. In terms of storage space, the center armrest box and door storage compartments at the front row provide ample capacity for small items. The trunk offers a regular capacity of 512 liters, which can be expanded to about 1,100 liters with the rear seats folded down, easily meeting the storage needs for daily family shopping or short trips.

The 1.5 TGDi engine used in this test drive delivers a maximum power of 130 kW (177 PS) and a maximum torque of 255 Nm, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The power output is tuned for smoothness, and there’s no noticeable jerking during starts, making it suitable for daily commuting. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the transmission downshifts quickly, and the power response is fairly positive. On urban roads, overtaking feels smooth, and once the engine revs climb above 2,000 rpm, you can clearly feel the pronounced torque output. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 9.8 seconds, which is not particularly fast but is more than adequate for family users.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate steering effort and precise directionality, with no obvious looseness, offering a pleasant feel during daily driving. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, which is calibrated for comfort. It absorbs minor road bumps effectively, and when crossing speed bumps, the suspension rebounds crisply without excessive swaying. At high speeds, the vehicle maintains excellent stability, and even when encountering crosswinds, there is no noticeable floating sensation. When cornering, the suspension provides good body support, with body roll kept at an acceptable level, which enhances driving confidence.

Regarding fuel consumption, this test drive was primarily on urban roads, with occasional highway segments. The combined fuel consumption was about 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.3L/100km. However, considering the traffic congestion in urban conditions, this result is still quite reasonable. The braking performance is stable, with the brake pedal offering a linear feel and balanced braking force. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains a stable posture without significant forward pitching.

In terms of ride comfort, the X70 performs commendably. Noise isolation in the cabin is well-executed, and at high speeds, wind noise and tire noise remain within acceptable levels, not interfering with conversations between passengers. The seat cushioning is relatively soft and offers good support, ensuring that long-duration rides are not fatiguing. The air conditioning system cools down quickly, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning caters to the different needs of front and rear passengers, with sufficient airflow from the rear vents.

Overall, the comprehensive performance of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive remains well-balanced. Compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, it offers a significant price advantage and richer configurations, such as a 360-degree panoramic camera, a fully digital instrument panel, and electric seats, which are rarely seen in vehicles of the same price range from joint-venture brands. The space and comfort also meet the needs of family users, while the power output is smooth, and fuel consumption is relatively economical.

This car is most suitable for family users who prioritize cost-effectiveness and space. It does not feature an overly aggressive design or particularly outstanding performance, but it is well-balanced in terms of space, configuration, and practicality. It is suitable for daily commuting and family outings. If you are looking for an SUV that is reasonably priced, well-equipped, and spacious, the 2024 X70 Executive version would be a good choice.

Pros
1.5T engine performs excellently in congested and highway conditions, 255N·m torque at 1500 RPM, flexible for overtaking
7DCT gearbox shifts smoothly, almost no jerking during low-speed following, suitable for urban stop-and-go traffic
Fuel efficiency is economical, approximately 7.3-7.5L/100km, 60L fuel tank provides 800+ km range, reducing refueling frequency
Cons
The co-pilot and rear seats are manually adjustable, not equipped with electric adjustment, affecting convenience.
Some areas of the interior use hard plastic materials, lacking soft wrapping, and feel less premium.
The paint is relatively thin, prone to small scratches, affecting the overall appearance.

As the owner of a 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive, having driven it for three months, I truly feel that this money was well spent! First, let's praise the performance, even giving it 5 stars feels insufficient! Malaysia has endless traffic jams, but the 1.5T turbo engine delivers 255N·m of torque at just 1500 RPM, allowing the car to accelerate smoothly with just a light tap on the gas when following other vehicles. It’s not sluggish for overtaking on the highway either. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds is considered fast for a C-class SUV. The 7DCT transmission ensures smooth gear shifting; driving in stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur shows almost no jerkiness. With a fuel consumption of 7.3L/100km, running on RON95 petrol isn’t expensive either. The 60L fuel tank allows for a range of over 800 km, reducing the need for frequent visits to the gas station. For the interior, I’d give it 4 stars. The 12.3-inch infotainment screen is large enough, the CarPlay connection is smooth, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning cools quickly. The rear seats even have independent air vents, so it's not cramped even with 5 people onboard. However, the front passenger and rear seats are still manually adjustable. If they could be upgraded to electric adjustments, it would be perfect. In terms of safety, it comes with 6 airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, and a vehicle stability system. One time while cornering on a mountain road in Penang, I almost skidded, but the ESP system intervened promptly, giving me quite a scare. A 4-star rating here is very reasonable. As for the exterior, the LED headlights and taillights have high recognition, and the 225/65 R18 tires paired with the 18-inch wheels can handle rough rural roads without worrying about scraping the undercarriage. However, the paint is a bit thin. I noticed some minor scratches during a car wash, so I’d deduct one star for this. In summary, being able to buy such an all-around vehicle for 110,000 MYR, Proton has truly put in a lot of effort this time!

Owner of 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive
As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive, having driven it for nearly two months, the daily use experience in Malaysia has been truly great! Firstly, I must give full marks for the exterior! The newly redesigned front looks sharper than the previous model, and the LED headlights and continuous taillights have incredibly high recognition at night in KL. Every time I park near Pavilion, it always catches some extra attention. Proton's design this time really matches my aesthetic. For performance, I’d rate it a 4 out of 5. The 1.5T engine is more than sufficient for KL’s traffic jams, especially with torque kicking in at 1500 RPM, making it very agile for following traffic or quick lane changes. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands; while it doesn’t feel as powerful as a larger displacement engine during uphill drives, stepping on the gas pedal harder still manages to maintain speed steadily. The 9.8-second acceleration gives confidence for overtaking on highways, though the DCT does have minor jerks at low speeds when following traffic. However, it doesn’t really affect daily driving much. As for the interior, I’d also rate it a 4 out of 5. The 12.3-inch central display is very clear, and the dual-screen design enhances the tech vibe. The dual-zone air conditioning cools down incredibly fast, which is great for Malaysia’s hot weather. The leather seats feel high-quality, and the 6-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat is very convenient, though the passenger’s seat is still manually adjustable, which could be an area for improvement. The rear space is quite generous, and my family didn’t complain about feeling cramped during a long trip to Penang. The overall craftsmanship is much more refined than the previous model, but if the plastic parts on the dashboard were replaced with soft-touch materials, it would feel even more premium. Overall, being able to get such features and experience at this price point is really worth it in Malaysia!

Owner of 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive
As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive and having driven it in Malaysia for three months, the most surprising aspect is the interior! Sitting inside the car, the 12.3-inch central control screen and the fully digital instrument cluster look particularly premium, completely different from other cars in the same price range in terms of texture. The weather in Malaysia is hot, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is so practical—I like 22 degrees, my wife prefers 25 degrees, and we can adjust our own settings without arguing. The rear air vents are also strong enough; when taking my parents to Genting on weekends, the rear seat was not stuffy, and they praised how comfortable it was. The seats are leather, soft and cozy to the touch, and the 6-way electric adjustment is very friendly for someone like me who often goes on long drives, allowing for maximum comfort in any position. In terms of performance, the 1.5T engine is fully sufficient for road conditions in Malaysia. During Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic jams, the 7-speed DCT gearbox shifts very smoothly without any jerking. On the North-South Highway, overtaking is also effortless, especially since the maximum torque can be output at 1500 rpm—step on the accelerator, and you can feel the acceleration instantly, making overtaking quite easy. However, since it’s a 1.5T three-cylinder engine, you can still hear a bit of engine noise during sudden acceleration, but for daily driving, it’s absolutely fine. The fuel consumption is about 7.5L/100km, which is close to the official figure of 7.3L. A full tank can run for over 800 kilometers, making it pretty fuel-efficient. Overall, I would give the interior a full 5 stars without hesitation, and a 4-star rating for performance is reasonable. After all, with a price of just RM110,800, its performance has already exceeded my expectations!

Owner of 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive
As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Executive, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two months, here are a few points I really want to praise! Firstly, the interior deserves full marks! The first feeling when sitting inside is premium. The 12.3-inch central control screen combined with the full LCD instrument panel provides ultra-clear navigation—after all, Jalan Ampang in KL (Kuala Lumpur) often turns into a parking lot due to traffic jams, and the large screen makes checking real-time traffic so convenient. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is also very practical. I’m afraid of the cold, while my wife is afraid of the heat, so we can each set our preferred temperature without arguing. The rear air conditioning vent wasn’t omitted either—when taking my parents to Genting Highlands, they didn’t feel stuffy sitting in the back. The seats are leather, soft to the touch, and the 6-way electrically adjustable seats allow me to find the most comfortable position with one touch every time I get in the car, so even long drives won’t cause backache. In terms of safety, I’m completely at ease—full marks! Last week, a motorbike suddenly came out of nowhere at the Subang Jaya roundabout, almost grazing the car. The vehicle stability control kicked in immediately, and with a light turn of the steering wheel, I was back on track. It gave me a fright, but we were all safe. On regular days, when looking for parking in Petaling Jaya, the 360-degree surround view camera is a huge help—Malaysia’s roadside parking spaces are narrow, and with both the front and rear radar beeping, it’s almost impossible to scrape the car next to you. The configuration is comprehensive, including six airbags and ISO FIX mounts, which makes installing a child safety seat much more reassuring when traveling with kids. As for the exterior, I’d give it 4 stars. The overall design is actually quite grand, and the LED headlights and taillights have high recognizability when illuminated at night. When I drove to Malacca for a trip, someone even asked me about the car model. However, I think the front grille could be a bit more refined—if it had a chrome trim, it might look more luxurious. But honestly, for this price point, the aesthetics are already impressive. After all, Proton cars are generally quite pleasing to the eye in Malaysia. All in all, this car is really suitable for use in Malaysia. The interior is comfortable, the safety is reliable, and the exterior is decent enough. The value for money is unbeatable!
