In 2024, competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market remains intensely fierce, as family users increasingly demand "spacious interior + high configurations + balanced fuel efficiency." Launched this August, the Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, as a mid-cycle facelift of the brand's flagship SUV, not only maximizes intelligent safety configurations but also maintains a budget-friendly price, sparking curiosity among potential buyers: Can it continue its reputation as the "national SUV"? This test drive focuses on three core aspects: detailed upgrades after the facelift, dynamic driving quality, and practicality in daily use, to provide you with the most authentic experience.

In terms of appearance, the 2024 X70 Premium continues the family-style "Infinite Weave" design language, but detailed adjustments enhance its recognizability. The large front grille features a blacked-out vertical slat design paired with silver trim, creating a more stable visual focal point; the internal structure of the LED headlights on both sides has been optimized, and the daytime running lights adopt a segmented design, giving off a more technological feel when lit. The side profile of the body is smooth, with 19-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels (225/55 R19 specification) filling the gaps in the wheel arches. Coupled with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, the overall proportions are well-balanced. The most noticeable change at the rear is the through-type LED taillight, embedded with the "PROTON" lettering in the middle, offering maximum recognizability when illuminated at night. Chrome dual-exhaust embellishers on both sides enhance its sporty appeal.

Stepping inside, the interior feels more luxurious compared to the previous model. The dashboard uses soft-touch materials combined with imitation wood trim, boasting a delicate texture. A 12.3-inch floating central control screen replaces the previous 8-inch screen, offering higher resolution and smoother operation, supporting Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto. The fully digital instrument cluster provides clear display, with three theme modes to switch between, and can display real-time fuel consumption, tire pressure, and driving assistance status. In terms of configuration, the front row features a 6-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and a 4-way electrically adjustable passenger seat, with soft cushioning and decent support. The rear row has independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, with an almost flat floor. A passenger of 175cm height will still have two fists' worth of legroom. Storage performance is impressive: door storage compartments can hold two 500ml water bottles, the center armrest box is deep enough to fit a long wallet, and the trunk offers a standard capacity of 400L, expandable to 1141L by folding the rear seats, easily accommodating a baby stroller and two suitcases.

In terms of power, the new car is equipped with a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 130kW (177PS) and a maximum torque of 255N·m, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. In actual driving, the power response is quick during start-up, with no obvious turbo lag. When the accelerator is pressed deeply, the transmission shifts gears actively, and the official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 9.8 seconds, which is sufficient for daily overtaking or highway cruising. When switched to Sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, the RPM is maintained above 2000rpm, and power delivery becomes more direct. Handling performance is moderate: The steering wheel feels light with accurate feedback, aligning with the positioning of a family SUV. The front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned towards comfort, filtering out most bumps when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads. Rear passengers will not feel significant shaking. However, when cornering at high speeds, the body tilt is somewhat prominent, which is a common trait among SUV models.

In the fuel consumption test, we simulated daily commuting scenarios (30% urban congestion + 70% highway), with air conditioning and ACC adaptive cruise control activated throughout the journey. The final combined fuel consumption was 7.5L per 100km, slightly higher than the official 7.3L. Considering the vehicle weight of 1605kg, this result is middle-range among similar models. Safety features are a highlight: standard 6 airbags, ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, 360-degree panoramic camera, and blind-spot assist. Among these, the autonomous emergency braking system effectively detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead during testing, responding promptly. Noise control performs well, with minimal tire and wind noise at speeds below 80km/h; above 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but does not interfere with in-car conversations.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium lie in its "balanced features + practical space + affordable price." Compared to similar models like the Honda CR-V 1.5T or Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8L, it offers richer intelligent safety features while being approximately RM 20,000 cheaper, making it highly cost-effective. However, the issue of vibration with the three-cylinder engine is still slightly noticeable at idle, which might require some adaptation for consumers sensitive to cylinder counts.

This car is most suitable for family users who value cost-effectiveness—it offers ample space to meet daily commuting and short-trip travel needs, comprehensive safety features to ensure family safety, and balanced fuel consumption that won't significantly increase car maintenance costs. If your budget is around RM 120,000 and you're looking for a "well-rounded" family SUV, the 2024 Proton X70 Premium is worth considering in your shortlist.

Pros
The safety configuration is rich and practical, with autonomous braking and 6 airbags effectively ensuring driving safety under local road conditions.
The power performance is excellent, the 1.5T turbo engages early, providing smooth low-speed following and responsive high-speed overtaking, with economical fuel consumption.
The exterior design is striking, with LED headlights and 19-inch wheels enhancing recognition and attracting attention.
Cons
The rear through-type taillight design is ordinary and lacks novelty, with little difference from the previous model.
The rear middle floor bulge is relatively high, providing limited foot space for the middle passenger.
The three-cylinder engine produces considerable noise after continuous uphill driving, and the active braking at high speed is occasionally overly sensitive.

As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, I have been driving in Malaysia for almost three months now and have been falling more in love with it! There’s no worry about safety at all. Last time on KL's LDP highway, I was almost sideswiped by a car suddenly changing lanes, but the active braking system beeped and stopped the car automatically. With six airbags and lane departure warning, these features are especially useful on wet, slippery local roads, making it reassuring for family members to ride along. The exterior has an exceptional wow factor, and the LED headlights are particularly excellent at night on Jalan Bukit Bintang, giving the car a spirited look. The 19-inch rims and sleek body lines make it a head-turner; parked outside a coffee shop in SS2, passersby often ask if it’s a new car. As for performance, the 1.5T turbo offers torque at just 1500 RPM, making it effortless during stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur's peak hours. It conquers Genting’s hilly roads with ease while overtaking, and its 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.8 seconds is outstanding among local C-segment SUVs. With a combined fuel consumption of 7.3L and not increasing much even in traffic jams, it truly offers great value for money!

As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 Premium in Malaysia and having driven it for three months, what impresses me the most is its safety features! With so many motorcycles on Malaysian roads and unpredictable pedestrians suddenly appearing, this car's autonomous emergency braking system has saved me twice—once during a traffic jam on Jalan Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, when the car in front suddenly braked, and the system stopped my car automatically before I could even react; the second time was in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, when a motorcyclist suddenly dashed out. Both the lane departure warning and forward collision warning went off simultaneously, which startled me into steering away in time. Thinking back now, it still gives me chills. With 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera (super helpful for spotting motorcycles while parallel parking), and ACC adaptive cruise control, driving long distances on the North-South Expressway has become so much easier for my feet. The sense of safety is unparalleled, and I give it a full 5 stars—absolutely no complaints! As for the exterior, it’s more refined compared to the previous model. The LED headlights are especially bright when driving on the highway at night, and the body lines are sturdier than those of the CR-V in the same class. However, I do think the design of the rear end with the connected tail light is a bit plain—if it had a dynamic flowing effect like the new Saga, it would look much more impressive. So I’m giving it 4 stars overall. It’s still pretty stylish, and it catches quite a few glances when parked in the neighborhood!

As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 Premium for nearly three months, I genuinely feel that this car is very convenient to use in Malaysia! Starting with the exterior, I must give it a full score of 5! The newly designed front face is tougher than the old model, the LED headlights are particularly bright during rainy days in KL, and the 19-inch wheels are perfectly proportioned to the body. Every time I park at the Lalaport parking lot, people turn their heads to look. For a local brand to achieve this level of quality, Proton has indeed made great progress. I give the interior 4 points. Overall, I’m quite satisfied — the 12.3-inch infotainment screen responds quickly, the dual-zone air conditioning system cools down super fast in KL's 35-degree weather, and the leather seats remain comfortable even after long periods of sitting. However, the bulge in the middle of the rear row is a bit high. When I took three friends to Genting, the one sitting in the middle said their feet felt a bit cramped. If it could be made flat, it would be perfect. In terms of performance, also 4 points. The 1.5T engine is completely sufficient for urban use, especially on the congested roads of Jalan Ampang. The 7DCT transmission shifts gears very smoothly without any jerking. When overtaking trucks on the North-South Expressway, pressing the accelerator deeply allows you to clearly feel the turbo kicking in, which gives a sense of confidence when overtaking. However, when driving uphill on Genting’s winding roads, the engine becomes a bit loud after continuous climbing. After all, it’s a three-cylinder engine, so it's understandable. Overall, for this price range, getting so many features that also suit local road conditions, I think it’s worth it!

As the owner of the 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium for almost two months now, I sincerely feel that this car is perfect for Malaysia's road conditions! In terms of performance, giving it full marks is no exaggeration—the 1.5T turbo kicks in early, delivering 255N·m of torque at 1500 rpm. When following traffic during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, just a light press on the accelerator gets it moving, and overtaking on the North-South Expressway is smooth and effortless. The 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.8 seconds makes overtaking trucks on the highway a breeze. Additionally, the 7.3L comprehensive fuel consumption means even with air conditioning running and city traffic jams, it only consumes around 8L, much more fuel-efficient than my previous car. The interior is even more surprising. The 12.3-inch infotainment screen has ultra-high clarity, and even CarPlay runs smoothly. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning can lower the cabin temperature within 5 minutes in Malaysia's 35-degree weather. The front electric seats come with lumbar support, making long journeys to Penang more comfortable, and the rear row has enough space for three adults to sit without feeling cramped. My family says it’s even more comfortable than our neighbor's CR-V. As for the exterior, there's nothing more to add—it speaks for itself. The LED headlights and full-width taillights have extremely high visibility at night, and the 19-inch wheels with 225mm tires make it a head-turner in the neighborhood. Proton's design this time is really in line with my aesthetics. Regarding safety, I'll deduct one point because, although it comes standard with 6 airbags, ACC adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera, the automatic braking can occasionally be a bit sensitive when following on the highway. However, overall, it's still very reassuring, especially with all the fundamental safety features being so complete. In conclusion, with a price of just over RM120,000, you won't find another SUV in Malaysia with these features. Highly recommended for friends looking to switch to an SUV!

As the owner of a 2024 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium in Malaysia for almost two months, what I appreciate the most is its interior! The first glance upon entering the car already makes it feel worth every penny — the 12.3-inch central control screen boasts ultra-high clarity, even my mom with her presbyopia can easily read the navigation. Coupled with the 6 speakers, listening to music while stuck in traffic on the LDP highway every day makes the frustration much more bearable. I often take my colleagues to the factory in Penang, and the rear space is spacious enough, they all say it doesn't feel cramped even during long rides. The most practical feature is the dual-zone automatic air conditioning. I can set mine to 18°C because I can't tolerate heat, while my colleague in the passenger seat can set theirs to 24°C if they're afraid of the cold — it's comfortable for both of us without having to compromise. Proton really put effort into the interior this time, every touchpoint uses soft materials, and it completely feels like it's in a higher price range, giving 5 stars is absolutely not an exaggeration! As for the exterior, I'd give it 4 stars. The "Infinite Weave" LED headlights on the front have great recognition, and they stand out especially in the traffic at Jalan Bukit Bintang at night. However, the design of the transverse tail lights at the rear doesn't feel much different from the previous model, lacking a bit of surprise. Overall, it still looks grand, and when parked downstairs at the apartment, neighbors often ask what car it is. I just hope the designers can add a bit more novelty to the rear design next time~
