In recent years, the B-segment SUV market in Malaysia has become increasingly competitive, with many family users and young consumers looking for a model that balances features, performance, and value for money. The 2025 Proton X50 Flagship, as a popular contender in this segment, has garnered much attention this time with upgraded smart features and more powerful performance parameters. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to verify whether its static experience meets the flagship positioning and whether its dynamic performance satisfies the needs of daily commuting and occasional travel.

From the exterior, the 2025 X50 Flagship continues the family-style design language, with smooth overall lines and a slightly sporty vibe. The front features a large grille paired with blacked-out trims, offering high recognizability; the sharp LED headlights on both sides are integrated with the grille, visually extending the width. The side profile is defined by a waistline running from the front to the rear, while 18-inch multi-spoke wheels add a touch of ruggedness. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt the currently trendy through-type design, creating a striking effect when lit; the diffuser-style detail and dual exhaust outlets on either side further enhance the sporty atmosphere. As for the lighting system, the full LED configuration, combined with the automatic headlight function, ensures sufficient convenience for daily use.

Sitting inside the car, the overall interior layout is simple yet exudes technological sophistication. The upper part of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, offering a relatively refined feel, complemented by silver trim to enhance its luxury compared to older models. The most striking feature is the 14.6-inch central touchscreen, which is considered large among vehicles in the same segment, with smooth operation and excellent resolution; the 8.88-inch fully digital instrument cluster provides clear displays and can switch between different themes to show information such as speed and fuel consumption intuitively. In terms of features, the flagship version comes standard with keyless entry, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and rear air vents – all of which are highly practical for daily use. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding the trunk capacity from its 330L base to accommodate larger items like strollers or suitcases. Additionally, the combination of a fixed panoramic sunroof and sunshade enhances interior lighting and improves the comfort of rear passengers.

In terms of space, the 2600mm wheelbase is considered standard for a B-segment SUV. With the front seats adjusted to a suitable position, a passenger with a height of 175cm has a headroom clearance of one fist and two fingers; in the rear, there are approximately two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. Even with three adults seated in the back, it doesn’t feel overly crowded. Storage space is reasonably designed, with a generous front center armrest box and storage compartments on the door panels. The rear also features cup holders and storage slots, making it convenient for storing small items like phones or water bottles during daily use.

As for the powertrain, the 1.5T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 181PS and a peak torque of 290N·m, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quite active at startup, and pressing lightly on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation; mid-range and high-speed acceleration also remain robust. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator harder triggers quick downshifts from the gearbox, providing sustained power output. Switching to Sport mode increases throttle sensitivity, keeps the RPMs in a higher range, and delivers a more aggressive performance. In Eco mode, the power output is relatively smoother, suitable for daily commuting, and helps achieve better fuel efficiency.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam semi-independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When dealing with minor bumps on city roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, ensuring passengers inside the car do not feel significant jolts; when encountering speed bumps or larger potholes, the rigidity of the rear suspension is sufficient, avoiding any sense of looseness. The steering wheel offers good precision with minimal play, is light at low speeds, and becomes steady at high speeds, making everyday driving easy to get used to. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and with the aid of the stability control system, overall stability is reassuring.

Regarding fuel consumption, our test drive was mostly on city roads, with occasional highway stretches. The combined fuel consumption was about 7.2L/100km, which is slightly above average among the same class of 1.5T vehicles. Considering its 45L fuel tank capacity, the range is roughly 600km, which is sufficient for a week's daily commuting without issues. The braking performance is stable, with the brake pedal having a moderate travel distance and a linear release of braking force. During emergency braking, the car body maintains a good posture.

In terms of ride comfort, noise control is well-executed. Wind noise and tire noise at high speeds are within acceptable limits and do not affect conversations among passengers. The seats offer excellent support and wrap-around comfort, ensuring that even during long drives, fatigue is minimized; the rear seat angle is moderate, and the seat cushion is sufficiently long, providing adequate leg support. Additionally, the automatic parking assist and 360-degree panoramic camera features are very friendly for novice drivers, reducing the risk of scratches during parking.

Safety features are a significant highlight of the 2025 X50 Flagship. With 6 airbags, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot assist, and ACC adaptive cruise control as standard, its safety configuration is relatively comprehensive among similar vehicles, providing ample peace of mind for both driver and passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Proton X50 Flagship lie in its rich features, robust performance, and commendable spatial layout. Compared to similar models like the Honda HR-V or Toyota Corolla Cross, its price is more affordable (RM 113,300) while offering more comprehensive features, presenting excellent value for money. It is well-suited for young families prioritizing features and performance, as well as office workers in need of a well-balanced commuter vehicle. If you’re looking for an SUV that drives well in urban settings with sufficient features and comfortable space, the 2025 X50 Flagship is worth considering.

As the owner of the 2025 Proton X50 Flagship for three months, I’m liking it more and more! The exterior deserves full marks. The blacked-out front grille combined with the LED daytime running lights makes it highly noticeable in KL traffic, and the recognition of the rear lights when lit at night is top-notch. My friends all say it’s much more refined than the old model. The interior is even more surprising – the 14.6-inch central control screen is bigger than a tablet and operates smoothly. Together with the panoramic sunroof, it’s perfect for weekend family trips to Genting Highlands. The rear seat has enough space for three adults without feeling crowded. The leather seats feel comfortable to the touch, and the electrically adjustable driver’s seat makes it especially enjoyable to recline during long drives. In terms of performance, I’d rate it 4 out of 5. The 1.5T turbo engine kicks in quickly, making overtaking on Penang’s mountain roads smooth and effortless. The 7DCT gear shifting is also seamless, although there’s a slight lag occasionally at low-speed following situations. That said, considering the traffic congestion in Malaysia, it’s already quite good. The safety features are comprehensive, with six airbags and ACC adaptive cruise control. Last time on the North-South Expressway, when the car in front suddenly braked, the active safety system automatically slowed me down. It gave me a scare but also made me feel very reassured. I just wish the lane-keeping assist was a bit more sensitive as it sometimes reacts a bit late to minor lane departures. Overall, getting so many features at this price point is truly impressive locally. Whether for daily commutes or weekend trips, it’s always worry-free and convenient!

As the owner of the 2025 Proton X50 Flagship for almost three months, I really have to praise its interior! The first glance when stepping into the car, I was immediately attracted by the 14.6-inch central control screen. It’s much bigger than the one in my previous car, and it’s very clear for navigation and adjusting the air conditioning, plus it responds very quickly. There’s also the panoramic sunroof—on weekends, when taking my family to Genting Highlands, opening the sunshade to let the sunlight in, the view is especially wide, and the kids in the back seat kept saying “so beautiful.” The seats are electrically adjustable; adjusting my sitting position before heading to work every day is very convenient, and the leather feels comfortable. Even during Kuala Lumpur traffic jams and sitting for long periods, it doesn’t feel tiring. As for performance, it’s also pretty good. The 1.5T turbo engine performs very well in busy areas like Jalan Tun Razak in KL. It’s quick to accelerate when starting or overtaking—7.6 seconds for acceleration isn’t just a boast. However, sometimes when driving slowly in traffic, the DCT gearbox can feel a little jerky, but it doesn’t affect daily driving. Last time, I drove my friends to Penang and used ACC cruise control on the highway. The power reserve was more than enough, and acceleration for overtaking was very responsive, with the car remaining stable. But the rear suspension uses a torsion beam, so when driving on bumpy roads such as rural roads in Selangor, the rear seats can feel a bit bumpy. Still, overall, I’m very satisfied. In conclusion, for this price point, having such interior quality and performance is truly worth it!

As the owner of a 2025 Proton X50 Flagship, after driving it for three months, I like it more and more! Let me first praise its performance. The 1.5T turbocharged engine + 7DCT gearbox is perfect for Malaysian road conditions — during the morning rush hour near KLCC, the gear shifts are so smooth that there's almost no jerking; on weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 290 Nm of torque that bursts out at 2000 rpm makes climbing hills, overtaking, and following other cars effortless. The official 7.6-second 0-100 km/h is no exaggeration. On the highway, overtaking trucks is smooth with just a push on the pedal, not sluggish at all. I give full marks for the exterior! The LED headlights and through-type taillights have remarkable recognition, especially at night when parked in Pavilion's parking lot — it gets much more attention compared to the Japanese cars parked nearby. The 18-inch wheels paired with the sporty body lines make it look awesome; friends all say it doesn't look like a car just over RM100,000. I deduct one point for the interior because the rear seats are a bit hard. When I took my parents to Penang on a long trip for three hours, they said their lower back felt a bit sore. However, the electric adjustment for the front seats is very convenient, the 14.6-inch central control screen operates smoothly, and CarPlay connectivity is also stable. Overall, the build quality is still very solid and much more refined compared to the older X50 model. In conclusion, the configuration and performance you get at this price point make it really worth it in Malaysia!
