In Malaysia's B-Segment SUV market, consumers are becoming increasingly clear about their demand for high specifications, strong performance, and balanced practicality—after all, users in this segment need to meet daily commuting needs while accommodating family weekend outings. As one of Proton's most popular models, the 2025 X50 Premium has gone all out this time with features like a 14.6-inch central control screen and Level 2 driving assistance, all at a starting price controlled at RM 101,800. This “more features without a price hike” adjustment has made many curious: can its actual performance live up to this level of configuration? In this test drive, we focus on its static experience, power response, and daily practicality to provide prospective buyers with a solid reference.

The exterior of the 2025 X50 Premium hasn’t undergone major changes, but detailed adjustments make it more recognizable. The front still features the family-style shield grille, but the vertical chrome strips inside have been replaced with a thicker design. Combined with the sharply angled LED headlight groups on both sides, the front end looks more robust. The side profile retains the compact SUV posture, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, paired with 18-inch multi-spoke wheels, giving it a sleek visual appearance. The rear LED taillight assembly uses a through-type design, with the Proton lettering in the middle now illuminated, making it highly recognizable at night. The silver skid plate under the rear bumper and the dual exhaust layout on each side also retain a hint of sportiness.

Entering the cabin, the first thing you notice is the 14.6-inch central control screen—its size is almost unmatched in its class, boasting high resolution and smooth operation. The overall interior adopts a dark color scheme, with the dashboard covered in soft-touch materials and the inner door panels wrapped in leather, offering a decent tactile quality. The instrument panel is an 8.88-inch full LCD display, capable of showing navigation, tire pressure, driving modes, and other information with a clear and readable interface. In terms of features, the front seats are electrically adjustable, offering decent support and cushioning. The rear seats can be split 60:40 and folded down, expanding the trunk space from 330L to accommodate strollers or suitcases with ease. The rear row is equipped with independent air-conditioning vents and USB charging ports, catering to the needs of rear passengers.

In terms of power, the 2025 X50 Premium continues to be equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum of 181 PS and a peak torque of 290 N·m, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. During actual driving, the power response in the initial acceleration phase is very enthusiastic; a light tap on the accelerator produces a noticeable push-back feeling. Mid-range and higher-end acceleration doesn’t feel weak either; during overtakes, stepping harder on the accelerator triggers swift downshifts from the transmission, with power delivered directly. There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity is higher, and the transmission shifts later, catering to users who occasionally seek excitement.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel feels rather light, making daily city parking and U-turns very easy; at highway speeds, the steering wheel becomes heavier, providing good stability. The suspension employs a front MacPherson strut and a rear torsion beam setup. When dealing with speed bumps or uneven roads commonly seen in urban areas, the suspension filters out most of the bumps, avoiding overly harsh impacts. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled, with no noticeable swaying. The brake pedal feels linear, and the braking distance ranks above average in its class, inspiring confidence in daily driving.

In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 100km each in urban congested areas and highways, with an average fuel consumption of about 7.2L/100km. If it's purely for urban commuting, the fuel consumption might rise to around 8L/100km, while on highways, it can drop to about 6.5L/100km. This performance is quite reasonable for a 1.5T SUV. Noise control is also commendable. At speeds below 80km/h, wind and tire noise are not noticeable; after surpassing 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect conversations inside the car.

The safety features are a highlight of the 2025 X50 Premium: 6 safety airbags, L2-level driver assistance systems (including ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic braking), 360-degree panoramic cameras, and front and rear parking sensors are all equipped. In actual use, the ACC adaptive cruise control is very convenient on highways, as it can automatically follow the car ahead and maintain distance. The automatic braking system responds quickly when following cars in city traffic, intervening rapidly in unexpected situations, making it very friendly for new drivers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 X50 Premium are clear: the largest central control screen in its class, comprehensive safety features, decent power output, and a price of RM 101,800, which is much cheaper than competitors like the Honda HR-V or Toyota Corolla Cross, making its value for money stand out. Compared to its competitors, its features are richer than those of the HR-V, while being nearly RM 15,000 cheaper. It offers stronger performance than the Corolla Cross, and its space utilization is comparable.

The target audience for this car is very clear: SUV users with a budget of around RM 100,000, looking for a vehicle that's well-equipped, powerful enough, and suitable for family use. Whether for daily commuting, weekend family outings, or occasional short road trips, it can meet all these needs. If you don't require extreme off-road capabilities and just need a balanced and practical urban SUV, the 2025 X50 Premium is indeed a good choice.

In conclusion, the 2025 Proton X50 Premium has established a solid position in the B-Segment SUV market with its combination of "high configuration + strong power + affordable price". It has no significant shortcomings and is a well-rounded model, suitable for most ordinary family users.

As a 2025 Proton X50 Premium owner, after driving in Malaysia for almost three months, the overall experience has been quite good! Let me talk about the performance first. The 1.5T turbo engine paired with the 7DCT gearbox feels very smooth during starts and following traffic in the congested rush hour roads of Kuala Lumpur, with almost no jerky feeling. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the power is more than sufficient when climbing slopes. The acceleration time of 7.6 seconds is no exaggeration—when overtaking, a push on the gas pedal immediately gives you a sense of thrust, making it effortless. However, when driving on the highway at speeds over 120km/h, the acceleration starts feeling a bit lacking, which might be due to a drop in turbo performance, but it's definitely adequate for daily use. Giving it a 4-star rating is fair. Regarding the interior, the 14.6-inch central control screen and the 8.88-inch fully digital dashboard exude a strong sense of technology, and the operation is also very smooth. Especially the CarPlay connection is quite fast, which is very convenient in a place like Malaysia where traffic jams are so common—whether for listening to music or using navigation. The seats are leather, with good support, and the electric adjustment feature is also practical, making it easy to find a comfortable posture during long-distance driving. However, the center floor of the rear row is a bit raised, so if three people are sitting, the middle passenger might feel a bit uncomfortable. Additionally, the interior still has a bit of a plastic feel, especially the panel in front of the passenger seat, which doesn't feel very premium to the touch. If more soft materials were used, it would have been even better. So, I would give the interior 4 stars as well. Overall, this car performs quite well on Malaysian roads, meeting both urban commuting and weekend travel needs, with a high value for money!

As the owner of a 2025 Proton X50 Premium, having driven it in Malaysia for almost three months, I most want to talk about the exterior design and safety features. The exterior gets a very fair 4-star rating – the front grille's large size paired with the LED daytime running lights make it highly recognizable in KL's morning rush traffic, and every time I park near Pavilion, I notice people turning their heads to take another look. However, the rear's full-width taillight, although bright, has a slightly conservative design. If it could include a small spoiler or a more sporty diffuser, I think it would appeal more to young people. Safety deserves a full score! Last month, while driving on the North-South Expressway, I encountered a sudden situation where the car in front braked abruptly. My X50 immediately activated the autonomous emergency braking, helping me avoid a rear-end collision – my heart nearly stopped at that moment and I still feel terrified looking back. Moreover, Malaysia's rainy season sees frequent water accumulation on highways, and the stability control system intervenes promptly. The steering wheel never feels loose. The most thoughtful feature is the 360-degree camera system. When parking in the narrow, older streets of Penang, even the motorcycles on the roadside can be seen clearly, making it effortless for new drivers to handle. In conclusion, these two points truly haven't let me down with the X50 Premium, making it incredibly reassuring to drive in the local context!

As the owner of a 2025 Proton X50 Premium, I've been driving it for three months, and it's been truly impressive! Performance deserves a perfect 5-star rating with no complaints at all—thanks to the 1.5T turbo engine and 7DCT transmission. During the rush hour traffic on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, acceleration and stop-and-go traffic handling are exceptionally smooth, and you can feel the push-back sensation when you step on the gas pedal. Last week, I went to Genting Highlands, and the power was still very strong during uphill climbs, overtaking felt decisive, and the official 0-100km/h timing of 7.6 seconds is no exaggeration! I’d give the interior a score of 4 because while the overall quality is good, there’s room for improvement in details. The 14.6-inch large screen remains clear under Malaysia's sunlight and operates smoothly. The electric seat adjustment is super practical for someone like me, who often drives long distances. However, it’s a bit disappointing that the passenger seat is still manually adjustable. Although the rear seats can be folded 60:40, the material is somewhat hard, which can get uncomfortable for long periods of sitting. Overall, to get such features at this price point, I’m already very satisfied!

As the owner of a 2025 Proton X50 Premium, having driven it for almost three months, I sincerely feel that this exterior design suits my taste perfectly! Every time I park near the KLCC parking lot, people can't help but glance at it— the LED headlights look like sharp eagle eyes, and the car's body lines are both smooth and sporty. Particularly the fastback design makes it stand out among the myriad of family cars in Malaysia. Last week, I took my family to Penang, and while resting at a service area, a gentleman in the car next to me asked, "Is this the new X50? It looks much more vibrant than the old model!" I felt a little proud at that moment. I'm also quite reassured when it comes to safety. After all, driving on the Malaysian highways, you occasionally encounter cars that suddenly change lanes. The lane departure warning will "beep" to alert me, and the automatic emergency braking was triggered once— the car in front of me suddenly slowed down, and before I could react, my vehicle braked itself. It gave me a scare, but I was grateful for the feature. However, I have to deduct a point because there was once when I was driving on a bumpy village road, the vehicle stability system intervened a bit too sensitively. Even a slight bump would trigger the warning light, and though I understand it's for safety, it felt somewhat like "making a mountain out of a molehill." Overall, the safety features are still adequate. After all, six airbags and a 360-degree camera system come as standard, making it much easier to park in the narrow alleys of Kuala Lumpur.

As the owner of the 2025 Proton X50 Premium, after driving it for three months, let’s talk about the interior and exterior~ First, let’s talk about the exterior, I think a 4-star rating is very reasonable! The large blacked-out front grille paired with the LED headlights looks particularly impressive under the scorching Malaysian sun. Every time I park it in front of a Lotus mall, it catches a few extra glances. The body lines are more fluid than the old model, especially with the coupe-styled side design and the 18-inch blacked-out wheels. Driving on the highways of Kuala Lumpur truly turns heads. But I wish the car paint could be thicker. Last time on Jalan Ampang, a pebble hit the car, and it lightly chipped the paint. That took away a few points for me. As for the interior, I’m also satisfied with a 4-star rating. The 14.6-inch central control screen is amazing, and it works super smoothly for watching YouTube while stuck in Penang traffic. The resolution is high too. The electric seats are very convenient to adjust, so it’s easy to find a comfortable position for long drives. However, there’s a small drawback: the plastic part next to the front cup holder feels a bit hard. Last time, I accidentally bumped my phone there. While it didn’t break, the hand feel isn’t that great. But overall, the materials used are very solid, with lots of soft upholstery—way better than Japanese cars in the same price range~ Overall, both aspects exceeded my expectations. Proton really put a lot of thought into this facelift!
