In 2025, the selection of mid-to-large SUVs in the Malaysian market is becoming increasingly diverse, with family users and outdoor enthusiasts leaning toward models that balance comfort, performance, and practicality. As a new hybrid option in the rugged SUV lineup, the TANK 500 HEV offers a combined 346PS of horsepower, a maximum torque of 648N·m, along with standard features such as a four-wheel drive system and a panoramic sunroof, making it a highly discussed model in this niche market. Over a week-long urban commuting and short-distance outdoor test drive, we focused on its powertrain transition, space utility, and feature performance to see if it fulfills local consumers' expectations of an "all-around SUV."

In terms of appearance, the TANK 500 HEV continues the brand's iconic rugged style with a large chrome front grille paired with square LED headlights, giving it a highly recognizable look. The body lines are kept straight, while the roof rack and 20-inch multi-spoke wheels enhance its off-road vibe. The LED tail lights at the rear echo the front design, and the chrome accents under the rear bumper add a touch of refinement. For the lighting system, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, and front fog lights come as standard, providing sufficient illumination at night.

Stepping inside, the interior mainly uses black soft-touch materials, coupled with wood grain panels and silver trim, creating a generally stable and composed atmosphere. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and 14.6-inch central touchscreen deliver a strong sense of technology. The central screen operates smoothly, with practical features such as built-in navigation, Bluetooth, and smartphone connectivity. In terms of configuration, HUD head-up display, wireless charging, and an Infinity 12-speaker audio system are standard, while the front seats offer 8-way electric adjustment, and the passenger seat has 6-way electric adjustment. The seat padding is soft, making long rides comfortable.

The spaciousness is one of the strengths of the TANK 500 HEV. With a 2850mm wheelbase, the rear legroom is quite ample—when a passenger of 175cm sits in the back, there’s over two fists of space between the knees and the front seatback. The second row supports a 60:40 split fold, while the third row offers a 50:50 split fold. The trunk has a default capacity of 98L, which can be expanded to 776L when the third row is folded, and up to 1489L when all rows are folded down—easily accommodating a baby stroller or camping gear. The cabin also has plenty of storage compartments; the front and rear door panels can hold two bottles of water, while the central armrest box and glove compartment are spacious enough for daily use. The second row even features independent air-conditioning vents and a USB charging port.

In terms of performance, the combination of the 2.0T turbocharged engine and permanent magnet synchronous motor delivers a combined output of 346PS and a total torque of 648N·m, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. During daily city commutes, the motor's intervention makes for a brisk start, and the accelerator response is very smooth. The power delivery is seamless under speeds of 60km/h. In Sport mode, the throttle becomes more sensitive, and pressing the accelerator deeply engages both the engine and the motor simultaneously, providing impressive acceleration from 80km/h to 120km/h, making overtaking easy and confident. The transmission shifts gears with clear logic, and both upshifts and downshifts are proactive, with virtually no noticeable jerking. During the test drive, fuel consumption averaged about 9.5L/100km in city conditions and 8.2L/100km on highways. For a mid-to-large SUV, this fuel efficiency is considered average.

In terms of handling, the combination of front double wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When driving on asphalt roads daily, the suspension can filter out most small vibrations, and the shock from speed bumps is handled relatively smoothly. The steering wheel has moderate steering effort, is fairly precise, and has minimal play. At higher speeds, the steering wheel becomes steadier, enhancing stability. Over the weekend, I took a drive on an unpaved road. The minimum ground clearance of 224mm allowed it to easily traverse small dirt hills and uneven road sections, and the four-wheel-drive system engaged promptly without any slippage. However, being an urban SUV, extreme off-road capability is not its strong suit.

In terms of noise control, the performance of the TANK 500 HEV is commendable. At speeds below 80km/h, wind noise and tire noise inside the car are minimal. Only at 120km/h on the highway does wind noise become slightly noticeable, but it does not interfere with normal conversation. The seats provide good wrapping and sufficient lumbar support, ensuring long drives are not excessively tiring.

In terms of safety features, the TANK 500 HEV excels. Standard features include six airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and vehicle stability control. The active safety systems comprise lane departure warning, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, and the ACC adaptive cruise control, which is very convenient on highways as it automatically follows and maintains distance with the car ahead. The 360-degree panoramic camera and automatic parking assist function reduce parking difficulty and are especially friendly for novice drivers.

Overall, the core advantages of the TANK 500 HEV lie in its smooth powertrain, spacious interior, and abundant features. Compared to competitors in the same segment such as the Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest, its hybrid system offers better fuel efficiency and power response, and its features are more comprehensive. Yet, its price is about 30,000 Malaysian Ringgit lower than similarly equipped competitors, making it a standout in terms of value for money.

In terms of target audience, the TANK 500 HEV is more suitable for family users who value practical space and features, especially families who frequently travel with elderly and young children. Its comfort and safety features meet these needs well. Additionally, users who enjoy weekend camping trips can also consider it, as the spacious trunk and four-wheel-drive system can handle light off-road scenarios.

All in all, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV is a mid-to-large SUV with "no obvious shortcomings." Its hybrid powertrain strikes a balance between performance and fuel efficiency, and its space and features meet the needs of most families. If you’re looking for an "all-rounder" SUV, it’s worth adding to your list of considerations.

Pros
The active safety system performs excellently and can effectively handle dangerous scenarios like sudden lane changes.
The 2.0T hybrid system delivers strong power, making climbing and overtaking easy, suitable for various road conditions.
The interior texture is good, with comfortable leather seats, and the center control touchscreen is responsive.
Cons
The plastic feel of the second-row cup holder is heavy, which does not match the overall interior texture
The car body is relatively long, making parking in mechanical parking spaces not flexible enough
There is occasional motor switching jolt in congested urban areas

Owner of 2025 TANK 500 HEV
As the owner of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two months, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Not long ago on the North-South Highway, I encountered a car that suddenly changed lanes, and the automatic braking system intervened directly, bringing the car to a steady stop—on Malaysian highways, sudden "maneuver actions" like lane changes are quite common, and this active safety system is truly life-saving! Usually, when taking the whole family to Genting Highlands, with its many winding mountain roads, the lane departure warning provides timely alerts. Combined with the 360-degree camera, I'm not worried about scraping against nearby motorcycles on narrow roads. Oh, even the third row has side airbags, so when traveling with the whole family, I feel secure sitting in the last row. In terms of safety, it deserves a 5-star rating with no complaints at all! As for the interior, the overall quality feels quite good. The leather seats feel soft to the touch, and the central control large screen responds quickly. While stuck in traffic in KL, browsing a playlist works seamlessly. However, there’s a minor detail: the second-row cup holders feel a bit plasticky, which doesn't quite match the overall wood-grain decor. If they were replaced with metallic materials, it would look even more refined. But overall, it deserves a 4-star rating since the space is generous, and its 7-seat configuration doesn't feel cramped when taking friends to the East Coast beaches. The air conditioning cools rapidly and handles Malaysia’s hot climate perfectly!

Owner of 2025 TANK 500 HEV
As the owner of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV, after driving in Malaysia for almost two months, the two topics I want to talk about the most are safety and performance. Let’s talk about safety first. I would give it 4 points because its overall performance is indeed stable, but there are still minor issues in the details. On Malaysian highways, cars suddenly changing lanes is quite common. Its automatic braking and lane departure warning react very promptly. Once on the North-South Highway, I was nearly grazed by an MPV abruptly cutting in front of me, but the system immediately applied the brakes for me. It gave me a scare but ensured safety. However, there was an incident in Kuala Lumpur’s city traffic where the forward collision warning gave a false alert. At that time, the following distance was actually sufficient, but it suddenly beeped, which did cause a bit of panic—if only the sensitivity could be adjusted to better suit local traffic conditions, then it would be perfect. Now, let’s praise the performance. I must give it 5 points! The 2.0T hybrid power is truly strong. Especially when climbing the Genting Highlands route, fully loaded with 7 people and luggage in the trunk, stepping on the accelerator still felt very smooth, without any sense of being "underpowered." Previously, when I drove my friend's fuel-powered SUV to Genting, I had to downshift and rev the engine several times during the climb. This hybrid version was smooth throughout the entire journey, and even my wife praised how comfortable it was. Moreover, rural roads in Malaysia often have potholes, but its four-wheel drive system coupled with high ground clearance made navigating these bumpy roads completely effortless. Last week, I took my family to a fruit orchard in Pahang; the last few kilometers of muddy roads were easily handled—it really has no shortcomings in terms of performance. Overall, its safety is reassuring, and its performance is truly impressive. As a family 7-seater SUV, driving it in Malaysian road conditions is indeed worry-free!

As the owner of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV, I've been driving it in Malaysia for nearly three months. I think it's fair to give 4 stars for both appearance and performance. Let’s talk about appearance first. The boxy design of this car truly stands out on the roads in KL, especially with that large grille and round headlights, giving it a very rugged SUV vibe. However, when parking in mechanical parking spaces at malls like Pavilion, the length of over 5 meters does feel a bit cumbersome. If it could be a bit more agile, that would be perfect. As for performance, the 2.0T hybrid system is impressive for overtaking on the highway. The system's combined torque of 648 N·m is no joke. Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on the highway, the ACC adaptive cruise control combined with the power output made the journey very effortless. However, in congested city traffic, there's an occasional slight jolt when switching between the motor, which doesn’t affect driving but hopefully can be optimized in the future. Additionally, on the winding roads of Genting Highlands, the all-wheel drive system performed well, and the vehicle stability during cornering was great. The only downside is that the fuel consumption was slightly higher than on the highway, about 10 liters per 100 km. Overall, the car's performance on Malaysian roads is quite satisfying. If the finer details can be improved a bit, it would be perfect.

As the owner of a 2025 TANK 500 HEV, after driving in Malaysia for three months, I’m truly falling more in love with it the more I drive! Its performance has far exceeded my expectations. During Kuala Lumpur's peak hour traffic, the hybrid system switches seamlessly, and starting off isn’t sluggish at all. On weekends, taking the family for a drive to Genting Highlands or the East Coast, the power reserve of the 2.0T engine combined with the motor is more than sufficient for climbing slopes, and overtaking on mountain roads feels very confident. The AWD system also feels stable on slippery highways during rainy days. The interior quality is impeccable; the leather seats feel very comfortable to the touch. The 7-seat layout is highly practical; when the third row is folded down, there’s plenty of space for a baby stroller and camping gear, and the second-row space is spacious enough that my parents still feel comfortable even on long trips. The Infinity sound system is amazing for playing music on the highway with excellent sound quality. The safety features give me peace of mind; for instance, last time in Penang, a car suddenly switched lanes and almost grazed me, but the autonomous braking system kicked in right away. The 360-degree camera is also super convenient when parking in narrow streets near the Twin Towers. As for the exterior, it goes without saying—it’s rugged and stylish. Every time I park in a shopping mall lot, someone asks me what car this is, and it definitely turns heads!
