In recent years, the mid- to large-size SUV market in Malaysia has been heating up, with growing family demand for 7-seat layouts, strong power, and high-end configurations. The 2025 TANK 500 HEV is aimed precisely at this niche market. As the brand's first hybrid model introduced locally, it not only continues its rugged exterior design but also highlights "346 PS combined horsepower + 648 N·m combined torque" and abundant smart configurations as its core selling points, drawing attention from many consumers. This test drive focuses on examining its hybrid system performance, the practicality of the 7-seat space, and its daily driving balance to provide reference for potential buyers.

From a distance, the rugged design of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV is very distinct. Its length of 5078mm coupled with a width of 1934mm creates a stable and commanding presence. The front fascia features a large trapezoidal grille filled with chrome accents, while the sharp LED headlights on both sides connect to the grille, enhancing the visual width. The raised contour lines on the hood add a sense of power. The side profile of the vehicle has straight lines, with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels paired with 265/50 R20 tires that strike a balance between off-road aesthetics and on-road stability. The roof is equipped with a panoramic sunroof extending from the A-pillar to the backseat, improving interior transparency. At the rear, LED taillights are vertically aligned and connected by a chrome strip, while the silver skid plate under the rear bumper complements the rugged positioning, giving the overall design a high level of recognizability.

Inside the cabin, the interior features a brown and black color scheme. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials with wood grain accents, giving it a refined texture. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster is connected to the 14.6-inch central touchscreen display. The screen resolution is clear, and the operation is smooth. The standard HUD system can display information such as speed and navigation, enhancing driving convenience. In terms of configurations, the front seats support 8-way electric adjustments (driver's seat) and 6-way electric adjustments (passenger seat), both equipped with heating functions. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split-folding, while the third row features a 50:50 split-folding, expanding the trunk capacity from 98L to 1489L to meet various storage needs. Additionally, the Infinity 12-speaker sound system, three-zone automatic climate control, and rear independent air conditioning vents are all standard features, aligning with the positioning of a D-segment SUV.

In terms of space performance, the 2850mm wheelbase provides a foundation for the 7-seat layout. A 175cm tall occupant seated in the front row, after adjusting the seat, has about a fist and two fingers of headroom. When the second-row seat is adjusted to its farthest forward position, legroom measures two fists, and when adjusted fully backward, legroom remains approximately one fist, with headroom still about one fist. The third row is more suitable for children or short-distance use; for adult passengers, the leg space can feel a bit cramped, though headroom remains acceptable. Regarding storage, the door panel compartments, central armrest box, front cup holders, and other spaces are relatively ample, ensuring daily usability.

In terms of the power system, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a total system power of 346 PS and a combined torque of 648 N·m. It is paired with a 9AT transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. During initial acceleration, the electric motor ensures a very quick power response; a light press on the accelerator delivers a noticeable sense of push. In mid-to-high-speed acceleration, the engine and electric motor work together to deliver a smooth overtaking experience, even when fully loaded with seven passengers, without apparent power shortage. The drive modes include Economic, Standard, and Sport. In Economic mode, power output is relatively smooth, suitable for daily commuting, while Sport mode delays gear shifting for greater power reserves, ideal for high-speed driving.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the front double-wishbone independent suspension combined with the rear multi-link independent suspension offers good filtering effects when handling urban road bumps, and minor road vibrations are barely transmitted into the cabin. When passing speed bumps, the suspension rebounds crisply without extra swaying. The steering feel leans towards being solid and steady, with relatively high precision in directional control. The steering wheel maintains good stability during high-speed driving, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering, avoiding any "floaty" sensation. With a minimum ground clearance of 224mm and a full-time all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle performs well in terms of passability and escape ability on light off-road terrains (such as muddy or gravel roads) but is more suitable for urban and highway driving.

In terms of fuel consumption, this test drive primarily involved urban roads with occasional highway sections, and the air conditioning was on for the entire trip. The displayed fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km, showing a clear advantage compared to traditional fuel-powered models of the same class. Noise control is well-handled, and at speeds below 60km/h, there is almost no noticeable wind or tire noise inside the cabin. At speeds exceeding 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but remains within an acceptable range. The seats offer good support and cushioning, ensuring that even extended drives are not tiring.

In summary, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV's core strengths lie in its powerful performance, fuel efficiency, comprehensive configurations, and practicality with its 7-seat space. Compared to competitors in its class, such as the Toyota Prado (petrol version), its hybrid system is more fuel-efficient, and the configurations are more comprehensive. Compared to the Ford Everest, its interior refinement and intelligent features stand out. Overall, this car is well-suited for families who prioritize performance and need 7-seat space or consumers who often go on long drives.

Overall, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV delivers strong performance in terms of power, configurations, and space. Notably, the inclusion of the hybrid system strikes a balance between power and fuel economy. While the third-row space is somewhat average, it’s still sufficient for most family users. If you are looking for a well-balanced mid-to-large SUV, this vehicle is worth considering.

Pros
The rugged and aggressive appearance, square-shaped design paired with a large chrome grille, offers high head-turning rate
Practical safety features, functions like active braking and 360-degree panoramic imaging ensure travel safety
Excellent hybrid performance, smooth and fuel-efficient in urban areas, powerful for highway overtaking, and strong climbing power
Cons
The material of the third-row seats is relatively hard, making it uncomfortable for long-term sitting and prone to buttocks discomfort
The trunk has gaps, making it easy for small items to fall out when the third row is folded
The large vehicle body makes turning around on narrow roads inconvenient, and the wheels are prone to mud spots that are difficult to clean

Owner of 2025 TANK 500 HEV
As the owner of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV for almost three months, I truly feel that this car is a perfect match for Malaysia! First, let's praise the exterior – 5 stars, no less! The boxy, rugged design combined with the large chrome grille makes it a real head-turner in Kuala Lumpur traffic! On weekends, when I take my family to Genting Highlands, we park at the foot of the mountain, and several people have asked, "What car is this? So impressive!" Even my kids boast to their classmates, "My dad's car looks like a Transformer," which definitely boosts my ego~ As for the interior, I'd give it 4 stars. The overall quality is great, the genuine leather seats feel nice and soft, and the 14.6-inch central control screen works perfectly for navigating to George Town in Penang. However, the material of the third-row seats is a bit harder compared to the first two rows. Last time, when I drove my parents and three nephews to Malacca, the kids in the rear mentioned that their seats were a bit uncomfortable after sitting for two hours. It would be even better if this could be improved. In terms of safety, I'd rate it 4 stars as well. Safety is the most important thing when traveling with family! Last time, on the North-South Expressway, a car suddenly changed lanes, and the automatic braking system gave a “beep-beep” warning before braking for me. It scared me enough to make my palms sweat but also made me feel relieved. Furthermore, the 360-degree panoramic camera is incredibly useful when parking in the narrow alleys near the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Even my wife, who's a beginner driver, can park with ease. Though, if there were rear side airbags, it would provide even more peace of mind for the kids. Overall, this car is very reliable on Malaysia’s roads, has an imposing exterior, and its safety features are reassuring. If the interior details could be further improved, it would be absolutely perfect!

As a Malaysian car owner, I’ve been driving the 2025 TANK 500 HEV for almost a month. I would give both the exterior and interior 4 stars, and overall I’m quite satisfied! In terms of appearance, the large body size stands out prominently in Kuala Lumpur traffic. The rugged lines combined with the LED headlights make it highly eye-catching when driving at night on bustling streets like Jalan Ampang. However, the rear design feels a bit bulky, and it would be perfect if the taillights were more refined. As for the interior, the 14.6-inch central control screen and Infinity sound system are very practical during long drives to Genting Highlands, and the leather seats remain comfortable even after prolonged sitting. However, when the third-row seats are folded down, the gap in the trunk is a bit large, making it easy for small items to fall through. Overall, I think it’s great value for this price range!

As the owner of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV, I've been driving it for nearly two months, and my experience in Malaysia has been quite delightful! Let me start with the performance: I’d give it 4 out of 5 because though the hybrid system's smoothness in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic is impeccable — starting and following other cars feels very seamless — last week while climbing the slopes of Genting Highlands, the power from the 2.0T + motor combo was sufficient, but at higher RPMs, the engine noise was slightly louder than I expected. However, its burst of power for highway overtaking is definitely adequate, so overall, I'm quite satisfied. Safety deserves a full score! Malaysia sees frequent rainy days, and last time on the North-South Expressway when I encountered sudden rainfall, the stability control system responded extremely quickly, making the car feel very stable. Plus, the 360-degree camera was super handy when parking on the narrow old streets of Penang. With additional features like full-seat seatbelt reminders and active braking, I feel especially at ease when traveling with my family. As for the exterior, there's no need to say more — a solid 5 out of 5! The square, boxy design turns heads big time on Sabah’s coastal highways, and the LED headlights are very prominent even during the day. Every time I park at a shopping mall, there are always people coming up to ask about this car. It’s truly a source of pride that a domestic car can have such an amazing presence!

As the owner of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two months, the safety and performance are what I appreciate the most! First, let's talk about safety, which truly gives a great sense of security. On Malaysian highways where traffic is heavy, sometimes cars suddenly cut into lanes, and its active braking and forward collision warning react super fast. There was a time on the North-South Highway where I almost rear-ended another car, but the system braked for me immediately. It was a scary moment, but I was thoroughly impressed after that. Additionally, the 360-degree camera is a lifesaver when parking in narrow alleys and old parking lots in Kuala Lumpur. You can even see curbs and bollards very clearly, so no more getting out of the car repeatedly to check positions. Taking the whole family out in this 7-seater vehicle is also reassuring thanks to features like the full car seatbelt reminder and ISO FIX interfaces. As for performance, it’s even more surprising. The 2.0T hybrid engine’s power is more than enough for Malaysia's road conditions! When stuck in city traffic, the electric motor ensures very smooth starts without the jerks that gasoline cars often have; on the highway, when overtaking, the hybrid system delivers power together with a strong pushback feel, making overtaking those big trucks effortless. Recently, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the car had no problem with uphill climbs—its power felt ample. Moreover, the four-wheel-drive system was very stable on rainy mountain roads, with excellent car body control during turns. In conclusion, these aspects have truly impressed me, making the 300,000+ MYR absolutely worth it!

Owner of 2025 TANK 500 HEV
As a car owner who has lived in Kuala Lumpur for nearly ten years, after driving the 2025 TANK 500 HEV for almost two months, the most surprising aspect is its interior! I chose the brown leather seats, which feel soft to the touch. The 7-seater layout is incredibly family-friendly for someone like me who often takes my parents and two kids out — the second row is quite spacious, so my parents don’t complain about backaches even after sitting for a long time. When the third row is folded, the trunk can fit two carry-on suitcases and my kid’s scooter, which is completely adequate. The 14.6-inch large screen on the central console is quite responsive, and even CarPlay runs smoothly. When stuck in Kuala Lumpur traffic, playing some music on the Infinity sound system offers superb quality — far better than my previous car. The interior gets a solid 5-star rating without any issues! As for performance, I’d give it 4 stars. I usually drive in hybrid mode in the city, where it accelerates quickly and isn’t sluggish in stop-and-go traffic. Fuel consumption is around 10L/100km, which is significantly more efficient than petrol-only SUVs in the same class. Last weekend, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and while the climbing power was sufficient, accelerating beyond 120 km/h didn’t feel as responsive as in the city, possibly due to the vehicle's weight. But thinking back, after all, it’s a family SUV rather than a sports car. This performance is already more than adequate. Driving on the highway with ACC turned on is also very stable. Overall, I’m very satisfied!
