TANK 500 2025 Review

In recent years, the mid- to large-size SUV market in Malaysia has been heating up, with growing family demand for 7-seat layouts, strong power, and high-end configurations. The 2025 TANK 500 HEV is aimed precisely at this niche market. As the brand's first hybrid model introduced locally, it not only continues its rugged exterior design but also highlights "346 PS combined horsepower + 648 N·m combined torque" and abundant smart configurations as its core selling points, drawing attention from many consumers. This test drive focuses on examining its hybrid system performance, the practicality of the 7-seat space, and its daily driving balance to provide reference for potential buyers.
From a distance, the rugged design of the 2025 TANK 500 HEV is very distinct. Its length of 5078mm coupled with a width of 1934mm creates a stable and commanding presence. The front fascia features a large trapezoidal grille filled with chrome accents, while the sharp LED headlights on both sides connect to the grille, enhancing the visual width. The raised contour lines on the hood add a sense of power. The side profile of the vehicle has straight lines, with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels paired with 265/50 R20 tires that strike a balance between off-road aesthetics and on-road stability. The roof is equipped with a panoramic sunroof extending from the A-pillar to the backseat, improving interior transparency. At the rear, LED taillights are vertically aligned and connected by a chrome strip, while the silver skid plate under the rear bumper complements the rugged positioning, giving the overall design a high level of recognizability.
Inside the cabin, the interior features a brown and black color scheme. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials with wood grain accents, giving it a refined texture. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster is connected to the 14.6-inch central touchscreen display. The screen resolution is clear, and the operation is smooth. The standard HUD system can display information such as speed and navigation, enhancing driving convenience. In terms of configurations, the front seats support 8-way electric adjustments (driver's seat) and 6-way electric adjustments (passenger seat), both equipped with heating functions. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split-folding, while the third row features a 50:50 split-folding, expanding the trunk capacity from 98L to 1489L to meet various storage needs. Additionally, the Infinity 12-speaker sound system, three-zone automatic climate control, and rear independent air conditioning vents are all standard features, aligning with the positioning of a D-segment SUV.
In terms of space performance, the 2850mm wheelbase provides a foundation for the 7-seat layout. A 175cm tall occupant seated in the front row, after adjusting the seat, has about a fist and two fingers of headroom. When the second-row seat is adjusted to its farthest forward position, legroom measures two fists, and when adjusted fully backward, legroom remains approximately one fist, with headroom still about one fist. The third row is more suitable for children or short-distance use; for adult passengers, the leg space can feel a bit cramped, though headroom remains acceptable. Regarding storage, the door panel compartments, central armrest box, front cup holders, and other spaces are relatively ample, ensuring daily usability.
In terms of the power system, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a total system power of 346 PS and a combined torque of 648 N·m. It is paired with a 9AT transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. During initial acceleration, the electric motor ensures a very quick power response; a light press on the accelerator delivers a noticeable sense of push. In mid-to-high-speed acceleration, the engine and electric motor work together to deliver a smooth overtaking experience, even when fully loaded with seven passengers, without apparent power shortage. The drive modes include Economic, Standard, and Sport. In Economic mode, power output is relatively smooth, suitable for daily commuting, while Sport mode delays gear shifting for greater power reserves, ideal for high-speed driving.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the front double-wishbone independent suspension combined with the rear multi-link independent suspension offers good filtering effects when handling urban road bumps, and minor road vibrations are barely transmitted into the cabin. When passing speed bumps, the suspension rebounds crisply without extra swaying. The steering feel leans towards being solid and steady, with relatively high precision in directional control. The steering wheel maintains good stability during high-speed driving, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering, avoiding any "floaty" sensation. With a minimum ground clearance of 224mm and a full-time all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle performs well in terms of passability and escape ability on light off-road terrains (such as muddy or gravel roads) but is more suitable for urban and highway driving.
In terms of fuel consumption, this test drive primarily involved urban roads with occasional highway sections, and the air conditioning was on for the entire trip. The displayed fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km, showing a clear advantage compared to traditional fuel-powered models of the same class. Noise control is well-handled, and at speeds below 60km/h, there is almost no noticeable wind or tire noise inside the cabin. At speeds exceeding 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but remains within an acceptable range. The seats offer good support and cushioning, ensuring that even extended drives are not tiring.
In summary, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV's core strengths lie in its powerful performance, fuel efficiency, comprehensive configurations, and practicality with its 7-seat space. Compared to competitors in its class, such as the Toyota Prado (petrol version), its hybrid system is more fuel-efficient, and the configurations are more comprehensive. Compared to the Ford Everest, its interior refinement and intelligent features stand out. Overall, this car is well-suited for families who prioritize performance and need 7-seat space or consumers who often go on long drives.
Overall, the 2025 TANK 500 HEV delivers strong performance in terms of power, configurations, and space. Notably, the inclusion of the hybrid system strikes a balance between power and fuel economy. While the third-row space is somewhat average, it’s still sufficient for most family users. If you are looking for a well-balanced mid-to-large SUV, this vehicle is worth considering.
