Specs

Currently, Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market is highly competitive. Many family users and high-end consumers are seeking a balance between spatial practicality, performance, and technological features. The 2023 BMW XM, as the brand's first HEV-powered E-Segment SUV, is equipped with a hybrid system that combines a 4.4T twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor. It also boasts a wheelbase of over 3 meters and comes standard with luxurious features that have attracted a lot of attention. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to evaluate the static luxury feel, the actual performance of the hybrid powertrain, and whether its daily driving and riding experience is in line with its price tag in the millions.

From a distance, the design of the 2023 BMW XM is highly distinctive, with an overall style inclined towards sportiness and toughness. The front end features a large kidney-shaped grille with illuminated trim inside the grille. Combined with sharp LED headlight assemblies on both sides, the car has high recognizability when illuminated at night. The side profile features sleek lines, with a muscular waistline that extends from the front fender to the rear of the car. The 23-inch large wheels, paired with size 275/45 R23 front and 315/40 R23 rear wide tires, further enhance its visual impact. At the rear, the through-type LED taillight assembly is paired with a quad exhaust layout on both sides, while the diffuser design under the rear bumper reinforces the sporty attributes.

Sitting inside the vehicle, the interior predominantly uses dark tones, complemented by metallic accents and soft-wrapped materials, delivering a luxurious tactile experience. The center console is equipped with a 14.9-inch touch screen paired with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster in a dual-screen setup. The interface smoothness is commendable, and it supports both CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The multi-functional steering wheel comes with shift paddles, and the HUD heads-up display is standard, capable of clearly showing speed, navigation, and other information. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather and feature power adjustment and heating functions, providing good comfort. In terms of space, the dimensions are 5110mm/2005mm/1755mm, with a wheelbase of 3105mm. The rear legroom is spacious enough that adult passengers have a gap of about two fists between their knees and the front seatbacks. The trunk has a capacity of 527 liters, making it capable of accommodating daily luggage or a baby stroller with ease. The rear seats support split-folding, allowing for expanded storage space.

As for power, the 2023 BMW XM is powered by a 4.4T V8 twin-turbo engine and an electric motor hybrid system. The maximum horsepower of the engine is 489PS, while the electric motor delivers a maximum horsepower of 197PS. Although the system’s total torque is not explicitly mentioned, the official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.3 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport mode allows the electric motor to engage quickly during the initial start-up phase. The acceleration is smooth and powerful, and when the accelerator is pressed hard in the mid-to-late stage, the engine and electric motor work together to deliver ample power for overtaking. In normal mode, the power output is smoother and more suitable for daily urban driving.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal slack. It feels light at low speeds and becomes gradually heavier at high speeds, ensuring good stability. The chassis employs a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, with tuning tilted towards sportiness. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the chassis feels solid during high-speed driving. On bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most minor vibrations, but passengers in the rear seats may feel some jolting on larger bumps. The all-wheel-drive system performs steadily on slippery roads or light off-road conditions, improving the vehicle's off-road capability.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 12.9L/100km. During actual city driving, the fuel consumption in congested areas is about 14-15L/100km, while on highways it is about 10-11L/100km. For a 2.7-ton plug-in hybrid SUV, the fuel efficiency performance is average. As for pure electric range, the official range is 88km. During actual city commuting, if driven in pure electric mode, the range is about 70-75km, which meets the needs for daily short-distance commutes. The battery capacity is 25.7kWh, with a fast charging time of about 4 hours. The slow charging time is not clearly stated.

In terms of driving comfort, the cabin insulation is quite good, with wind and tire noise at acceptable levels during highway driving. The seats provide good support, and long periods of sitting are not fatiguing. The energy recovery system has adjustable levels, and when switched to the highest level, releasing the accelerator pedal causes the vehicle to slow down significantly, reducing the frequency of using the brakes. At the lowest level, the energy recovery feels similar to a fuel car, providing a smoother driving experience.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW XM lie in its strong performance, spacious interior, and rich features. Notably, it comes standard with luxury features such as a HUD head-up display, panoramic sunroof, and electric tailgate, making it competitive among models in its class. Compared with similar models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG and Porsche Cayenne S, the 2023 BMW XM has slight advantages in terms of power parameters and acceleration performance, and its hybrid system offers a degree of fuel economy.

This car is suitable for consumers who seek strong performance and luxury features, especially those who require ample space for family travel while also looking for driving pleasure. During daily city commutes, the pure electric mode can reduce operating costs; for weekend trips or long-distance driving, the hybrid system's power reserve can handle various road conditions.

Overall, the 2023 BMW XM is a well-rounded luxury mid-to-large plug-in hybrid SUV with strong performance, a spacious interior, and rich features. It can meet the daily needs of family users while also providing driving enthusiasts with a good handling experience. If your budget allows and you're looking for a combination of performance and luxury, this car is worth considering.

Pure electric mode is quiet and fuel-efficient, with an 88km range that basically covers urban commutes, suitable for congested road conditions
High appearance rate, the illuminated double kidney grille and 23-inch wheels have a unique design, attracting the attention of passersby
Cons
The vehicle is quite heavy (2.7 tons), with noticeable body roll when cornering, significant inertia during sudden braking, and is difficult to maneuver at low speeds.
Lacks a 360-degree surround view system and only comes with a rear camera, making it inconvenient for novice drivers to park in narrow parking lots.
The leather seats tend to stick to the skin in humid and hot weather, impacting seating comfort.

The interior texture of this XM is amazing! Everywhere you touch feels refined, but the rear space is a bit tighter than expected.

As the owner of the 2023 BMW XM, after half a year of driving in Malaysia, I genuinely feel this "big guy" is powerful enough! Previously, I drove a GLE 53, and switching to the XM was all because of its hybrid performance—4.4T + motor. In Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hours, the pure electric mode is quiet and fuel-efficient, and the 88km pure electric range basically covers urban commutes. On weekends, driving along the East Coast Highway in Sport mode, the 0-100km/h push-back feeling in 4.3 seconds is way more intense than the GLE 53. The 23-inch tires have outstanding grip. The exterior gets an incredible amount of attention, especially with the illuminated kidney grille. Taking a lap around the Petronas Twin Towers at night, you can't help but notice pedestrians turning their heads for a second look. However, giving the safety aspect 4 stars has its reasons—although the airbags and active braking are top-notch, it lacks a 360-degree panoramic view (only a rear camera). Parking can be challenging in Malaysia's narrow parking lots, so beginners might need to adjust a bit. Additionally, the vehicle weighs 2.7 tons, and the hybrid mode's fuel consumption of 12.9L isn't exactly low, slightly higher than expected. But overall, in the million-class hybrid SUV category, the XM truly has no rivals in performance and attention-grabbing looks—worth every penny!

This appearance turns heads, but the seat leather gets so sticky on hot and humid days that I want to use a straw mat while driving!

Last week, I took my wife and kids on a drive through Yunding Mountain Road. It had just rained, so the road was wet and slippery. Stepping on the 4.4T engine combined with the motor felt responsive, not sluggish at all. The xDrive kept the slipping under tight control. However, with a 2.7-ton vehicle weight, you need to ease off the throttle when cornering; giving its performance 4 out of 5 is fair. This big grille paired with 23-inch rims caught the attention of every car passing by when we stopped by the roadside. The exterior definitely deserves a 5. The interior is classy with genuine leather and carbon fiber, but the rear air conditioning adjustment area is a bit inconvenient to operate, so a score of 4 feels just right.
