In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has been heating up, and consumers have become increasingly clear about their demands for space practicality, intelligent configurations, and balanced power performance. As a core model under Proton, the 2026 X70 1.5 TGDi Premium positions intelligent driving assistance and luxury configurations as its core selling points in this update. Can it maintain its advantage in the same class? We conducted a comprehensive test drive to examine the car's real capabilities, from a static experience to dynamic performance.

In terms of exterior design, the 2026 X70 Premium continues the family's design language, but with detailed optimizations to enhance its recognizability. The front features a large blacked-out grille, paired with a chrome strip that spans across it, connecting the LED headlights on both sides, which visually widen the front end. The body side lines are smooth, and the 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels look tough, with slightly protruding front and rear wheel arches adding to the SUV's muscular appearance. At the rear, the blacked-out LED taillights feature a continuous design that echoes the front, while the silver skid plate below enhances the sporty feel. In terms of lighting, the vehicle is equipped with a standard full-LED lighting system, including automatic headlights and front fog lights, which are convenient for daily use.

Once inside, the interior primarily uses dark-colored soft-touch materials, and the dashboard layout is simple. The 12.3-inch central touchscreen, located in the center, boasts clear resolution and smooth operation; some physical buttons are retained below for easier operation without looking. The full LCD instrument cluster provides rich information and offers switchable themes, capable of displaying key data such as navigation and fuel consumption in real-time. In terms of configurations, the front row features a 6-way electric adjustable driver’s seat and a 4-way electric adjustable passenger seat, both offering moderate support and cushioning. The rear seats allow manual adjustment for the backrest angle. With a low central tunnel, the legroom for the middle passenger in the back is not too cramped when seating three people. For storage space, the front center armrest box and door panel storage compartments are roomy. The trunk's standard capacity meets the needs of daily family use, and folding down the rear seats provides additional space. The air conditioning system features dual-zone automatic constant temperature control, and the independent rear air vents ensure passenger comfort in the back.

Regarding performance, the 2026 X70 Premium is powered by a 1.5T turbocharged engine with a maximum power output of 181PS and peak torque of 290N·m, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. During actual driving, the power response is lively at startup, with sufficient torque output at low RPMs, making it easy to follow traffic or overtake smoothly in the city. Switching to sport mode enhances throttle sensitivity, and the gearbox's shifting logic becomes more aggressive, delivering a noticeable surge during acceleration. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 9.8 seconds, which is relatively above average for 1.5T competitors in the same class. In terms of fuel consumption, our tests under mixed road conditions (60% urban + 40% highway) recorded actual fuel consumption of approximately 7.8L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.3L. However, considering the SUV's aerodynamic drag and weight, this result is within an acceptable range.

As for driving experience, the steering wheel has a moderate weight and offers decent precision, with a light feel during daily driving. At higher speeds, the steering becomes slightly heavier to ensure stability. The chassis employs a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. It effectively absorbs most bumps and uneven road surfaces, and the body doesn’t sway significantly. When cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, with no noticeable instability. The braking system performs consistently, with a linear pedal response, and the vehicle maintains good posture during emergency braking. In terms of noise control, cabin noise at speeds below 60km/h primarily comes from tire noise. At higher speeds, wind noise becomes more pronounced, but it remains within an acceptable range without affecting in-cabin conversations.

Intelligent driving assistance configuration is one of the highlights of this car, with standard features such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane change assist, and active braking. In actual tests, ACC performs well on highways with stable following and smooth acceleration/deceleration; the lane departure warning reacts promptly, and the active braking system intervenes quickly during simulated sudden braking by the vehicle in front to avoid collisions. The 360-degree surround view camera provides high clarity, and combined with front and rear parking sensors, it virtually eliminates blind spots during parking, making it friendly for novice drivers.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium lies in its balanced performance: the space meets family needs, the configuration includes intelligent driving assistance and luxury features, the power is sufficient for daily use, and fuel consumption is relatively reasonable. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the Honda CR-V 1.5T or Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid, the X70 offers better value for money and more comprehensive features.

This car is suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and configuration, especially those who frequently travel with family members and require intelligent safety features. For users seeking extreme performance or off-road capabilities, other models may be more suitable, but for the majority of daily urban commuting and family usage scenarios, the X70 Premium meets the needs very well.

In conclusion, the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium is a well-rounded C-Segment SUV with no obvious shortcomings. With its rich features and reasonable pricing, it remains highly competitive in its segment.

Pros
The power performance is excellent, the 1.5T engine has sufficient torque, the turbo engages promptly, and there is no pressure climbing hills with a full load
The transmission is smooth, the 7-speed DCT shifts almost seamlessly, suitable for urban traffic and highway driving
Fuel efficiency is outstanding, actual fuel consumption is lower than official figures, and urban and highway combined fuel economy is cost-effective
Cons
The rear seats are only manually adjustable, and the Premium version is not equipped with electric adjustment, affecting convenience.
There are flaws in interior details, with hard plastic on the passenger door panel, and some materials lacking texture.
The exterior has minor drawbacks, such as thin car paint that is easily chipped by stones, and ordinary wheel styles with limited options.

As the owner of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, after driving it for three months, I like it more and more! Let’s start with the performance, full marks for sure – no complaints at all. For Malaysia’s traffic-jammed roads and occasional highway requirements, 181 horsepower + 290 Nm of torque are more than enough! During Kuala Lumpur’s rush hour traffic, the 7-speed DCT shifts smoothly; you can hardly feel any jerks. On weekends, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the turbo kicked in just in time for uphill drives, delivering maximum torque at 2000 rpm. Even when fully loaded with 5 people and luggage, it handled easily without feeling underpowered. Fuel consumption stabilizes at about 7.5L, even better than the official rating – I’m thrilled! The interior gets 4 stars because the overall quality feels really good. The 12.3-inch central control screen and full LCD instrument cluster enhance the tech vibe, and the dual-zone automatic air-conditioning cools super fast in Malaysia’s hot weather. The front electric seats are easy to adjust too. However, the rear seats only have manual adjustments. If they were electric, it would be perfect – deducting one point for this small regret. The safety configuration deserves 4 stars! With 6 airbags and a full set of active safety systems, it’s reassuring to drive on Malaysia’s roads where motorcycles zip around unpredictably. Recently in Penang’s George Town, a motorcycle suddenly dashed out from an alley, and the automatic braking system intervened, stopping the car in time. It was a scary moment, but it ensured safety. The ACC adaptive cruise control is incredibly useful on the North-South Expressway, freeing up the right foot and automatically adjusting the speed to follow traffic. Together with the 360-degree panoramic camera, parking in the narrow streets of Kuala Lumpur’s old town becomes worry-free without the fear of scrapes – providing an unparalleled sense of security! The exterior scores 4 stars because Proton’s new design this time totally aligns with my taste. The high-visibility LED headlights and taillights, along with the 19-inch wheels, create perfect proportions. Many neighbors have asked about the car when it’s parked in the community, and the attention it gets is undeniable! However, the car paint could be a little thicker. A small chip was caused by a flying pebble last time – it’s a minor issue, but still, there’s room for improvement. Overall, spending a little over 110,000 MYR for such configurations and experience is totally worth it! Proton’s upgrades this time really understand Malaysian drivers' needs. Highly recommended for friends looking to switch to an SUV!

As the owner of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, I have been driving it for almost three months and am overall quite satisfied! Speaking of safety features first, since Malaysia often experiences rainy weather, and occasionally encounters waterlogged roads on highways, the Vehicle Stability Control System and Autonomous Emergency Braking System are truly practical. Once, on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the system immediately alerted and assisted with braking, avoiding a collision. This feature gives me a great sense of security. The interior craftsmanship is also pretty good; the 12.3-inch central control screen responds very smoothly, the air-conditioning performs remarkably well in scorching Kuala Lumpur weather, and the seat wrapping feels excellent, ensuring comfort even during long drives. In terms of performance, the 1.5T engine is more than adequate for city driving, especially during traffic jams near KLCC, where it accelerates and follows other vehicles smoothly. On Genting’s hilly roads, the power output is also very linear without feeling strained. The fuel consumption stands at about 7.5L/100km, which is close to the official figure. Overall, its performance exceeds my expectations!

As the owner of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, I’ve been very satisfied after driving it for three months! Let’s start with the performance: the 1.5T turbo engine is sufficient for the stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hours. It’s not sluggish when following traffic at low speeds, and it feels confident while overtaking on the North-South Highway. However, the turbo lag is slightly noticeable during sudden acceleration. That said, achieving 0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds is pretty good in this price range, so giving it 4 stars seems reasonable. The interior definitely deserves full marks! The 12.3-inch central control screen and fully digital instrument panel are packed with a sense of technology. The dual-screen design looks particularly premium, and the touchscreen response is very quick. The leather seats are soft and comfortable, and the 6-way electric adjustment makes it easy to find a comfortable position. The rear space is also spacious, fitting three adults comfortably when taking the family on a trip to Genting. As for safety, it’s absolutely flawless and well-deserving of 5 stars! Since it rains often in Malaysia, there was a time on the Penang highway when it suddenly rained heavily. The lane-keeping and automatic braking systems helped me stabilize the car, and when I almost collided with a slowing truck ahead, the system automatically stopped the car, literally saving my life. The six airbags, coupled with the 360-degree panoramic view camera, make parking in narrow alleys like those in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown worry-free. As for the exterior, the new LED headlights and smoked taillamps look younger compared to the old model, and the body lines are very sleek. I just wish the front grille were a bit bigger to make it look more aggressive, so I’d give this 4 stars. Overall, getting this level of features for around RM 110,000 is really worth it in Malaysia!

Owner of 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium
As the owner of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, I’ve been driving it for almost three months, and honestly, it’s worth every penny! Let’s start with the performance — it’s a solid 5 out of 5. During Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Ampang morning rush hour traffic, the 290N·m torque kicks in at just 2000 rpm, making following other cars effortless with just a light press on the accelerator, without feeling sluggish. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the transmission shifts were super smooth even during uphill climbs. The 7-speed DCT barely showed any jerks, and with a full load of five people plus luggage, the 181 horsepower handled the mountain roads with ease. The interior gets 4 points. The overall craftsmanship is much more refined than the previous model. The 12.3-inch central control screen is highly responsive, and even CarPlay runs very stably. However, the plastic on the passenger side door panel feels slightly hard and lacks premium texture. That said, the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is a lifesaver in the Malaysian heat, especially with independent rear air vents. My parents, sitting in the back, said it didn’t feel stuffy at all. Exterior-wise, 4 points. The newly designed LED headlights have excellent recognition at night — especially when driving on the Penang Bridge, the brightness is sufficient. The body lines are more streamlined than the previous model, and my neighbors even asked if I got a new car. The only small regret is that the wheel design is quite ordinary — it would’ve been perfect if there was an option for sportier wheels. All in all, as a C-segment SUV, the features and performance you get for this price in Malaysia make it highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade their family car!

Owner of 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium
As the owner of the 2026 Proton X70 1.5 TGDi Premium, after driving it for almost three months, I truly feel that this car is very well-suited to road conditions in Malaysia! First, let me praise the performance — it's flawless with a perfect score of 5! Kuala Lumpur's rush hour traffic is often heavily congested, but once on the LDP highway or NKVE, stepping on the accelerator lets you feel the explosive power of 181 horsepower, making overtaking a breeze. Previously, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the 290N·m of torque was more than enough for climbing hills without feeling strained. In terms of fuel consumption, it’s about 8.5L/100km in the city, and it goes down to 6.8L on highways — even lower than the officially stated 7.3L, which is quite a pleasant surprise. As for safety features, I’d give it 4 stars. While it has basic features like 6 airbags, ESP, and ACC adaptive cruise control, I feel it would be perfect if lane-centering assist were added. However, the 360-degree surround-view camera has been incredibly helpful in Malaysia’s narrow parking spaces, so I no longer worry about bumping into adjacent cars. The active braking system has been triggered a few times, especially when following another car too closely, and its responsiveness is pretty quick. In terms of interior, the 12.3-inch infotainment screen and the fully digital instrument cluster exude a strong sense of modern technology, and they operate very smoothly. The leather seats remain comfortable even after long hours of sitting. In particular, the 6-way electric adjustment for the driver’s seat makes it easy to find a comfortable driving posture. However, it would’ve been better if the rear seats could also be electrically adjustable instead of manual adjustments, especially considering this is the Premium version. The air conditioning performance is absolutely sufficient for Malaysia’s hot weather, and the dual-zone automatic climate control is also very practical. Overall, being able to buy a car with such specifications at a price of RM112,800 really offers great value! Proton’s upgrades this time are truly thoughtful, and I highly recommend it to friends who are considering buying a car in Malaysia!
