Audi RS5 Review

In Malaysia's luxury performance car market, the five-door hatchback coupe has always been a niche but hardcore presence - it demands everyday practicality, sports car-like power output, and maintains the brand's consistent sense of refinement. The 2022 Audi RS5 Sportback 2.9 TFSI quattro is the newest competitor in this segment, with a straightforward value proposition: 450PS twin-turbo power, quattro all-wheel drive system, and the versatile space of a five-door hatchback. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating its power response, handling limits, and daily practicality to see if it can truly "have the best of both worlds".
Starting with the exterior, the RS5 Sportback retains Audi's family design of simple lines, while exuding sporty aggression in the details. The front end features a black honeycomb grille with a matte silver trim outline, giving it high recognition; the two raised muscle lines on the hood stretch from the A-pillar to the grille, enhancing its athletic look. On the side, the sloping roofline smoothly transitions from the B-pillar to the rear, complemented by 20-inch matte black wheels and 275/30 R20 wide tires for a low center of visual gravity. At the rear, the RS-specific diffuser is most eye-catching, paired with circular quad exhaust pipes that emit a deep crackling sound in sport mode. The lighting system is fully LED, with distinctive segmented daytime running lights, auto headlights, and standard front fog lights. The nighttime illumination is wide and sufficient.
Stepping inside, the interior design leans towards a minimalist tech aesthetic, with the center console tilted towards the driver, making it very user-friendly. In terms of materials, most of the dashboard and inner door panels are covered in soft leather with meticulous stitching. The steering wheel has a flat-bottom design, offers a firm grip, and integrates multimedia controls and drive mode switches on both sides, with paddle shifters on the rear. For core configurations, the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster supports multiple display modes, showing navigation and performance parameters directly. The 10.1-inch central touchscreen runs the MMI system, responds quickly, and supports CarPlay and Android Auto. The seats are wrapped in Nappa leather, with 12-way power adjustment for the front seats, allowing independent adjustment of lumbar support and lateral bolsters for comfort even on long drives. The rear seats are split-foldable in a 60:40 configuration. Although the sloping roofline affects headspace, passengers up to 175 cm tall will still have about two fingers of headroom. The legroom offers about two fist lengths, making it comfortable enough for two passengers for everyday use. In terms of storage, the front door panels can accommodate two bottles of water, the central armrest compartment offers decent depth, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 480 liters, which can expand to 1,300 liters with the rear seats folded down, easily fitting a stroller or large suitcase.
As for the powertrain, the 2.9T V6 twin-turbocharged engine delivers impressive specs: a maximum output of 450PS and a peak torque of 570N·m, paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel-drive. In actual driving, the initial acceleration is very responsive, and pressing down the accelerator by just one-third produces a noticeable pushback effect. Switching to sport mode makes downshifts even more active; the official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 3.9 seconds, and our tests recorded around 4.1 seconds, primarily because the road surface temperature affected tire grip. Mid-range acceleration is more robust, with overtaking from 80-120 km/h taking about 2 seconds. During high-speed cruising, the RPM is maintained around 1800, ensuring ample power reserves. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal slack. It feels light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, offering linear feedback. The suspension is uniquely tuned for RS, and in comfort mode, it absorbs most bumps when going over speed humps. Switch to sport mode and the suspension stiffens, providing excellent lateral support during cornering and keeping body roll within 15 degrees. The braking system consists of front six-piston calipers. In braking distance tests, 100-0 km/h took about 35 meters, with no heat fade after consecutive braking. As for fuel consumption, it achieved approximately 12L/100km in urban traffic and dropped to 7.5L/100km during highway cruising. It runs on RON 95 fuel, with a fuel tank capacity of 58 liters, yielding a full-tank range of approximately 500 km.
The details of driving comfort are well done. In terms of sound insulation, at a high speed of 120km/h, wind and tire noise are kept within an acceptable range. The main noise comes from the engine, but the exhaust sound in sport mode actually enhances the driving fun. The lateral support of the seats can firmly hold the body during intense driving, and when adjusted to a comfortable angle for long-distance travel, the support remains excellent. The automatic parking function is very useful, quickly identifying parking spaces with precise steering control during parking. The HUD head-up display shows speed and navigation information, so there's no need to look down at the dashboard, increasing safety.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2022 RS5 Sportback are obvious: powerful performance, precise handling, and the practicality of a five-door hatchback. Compared to its class competitor, the BMW M4 Gran Coupe, it offers more rear seat space, better equipment, and is approximately 50,000 MYR cheaper. Compared to the Mercedes-AMG C63 S, the V6 engine is more fuel-efficient than a V8, making it less costly for daily use. Overall, this car is suitable for two types of people: young families who need everyday commuting but occasionally want to enjoy driving, and business professionals who seek a balance between brand quality and performance. If your budget is around 800,000 MYR and you want a performance car that can "go shopping and run mountain roads," the RS5 Sportback is definitely worth considering.
