Audi RS6 Review

When the 3.0T V6 became the mainstream powertrain for luxury performance cars, the Audi RS6 Avant has stuck to its 4.0T V8 twin-turbo engine, making it a "minority" that’s nonetheless an unignorable presence in the mid-to-large performance wagon market. The 2023 RS6 Avant is priced at RM 1,067,402 in the Malaysian market, approximately RM 40,502 more expensive than the 2020 model. What practical changes does this facelift bring? Through a static experience and a dynamic test drive, we verify whether it’s still worth buying for fans of performance wagons.
Starting with the exterior, the overall dimensions of the 2023 RS6 Avant remain consistent with the 2020 model: length 4995mm, width 1951mm, height 1460mm, with the wheelbase at 2930mm (only 1mm longer than the previous model). The side profile still features the elongated silhouette characteristic of a wagon. Changes at the front are mainly in the details: the hexagonal grille’s honeycomb trim has been upgraded from matte black to glossy black, paired with the RS-exclusive red front lip trim for a more dynamic look. While the headlights still use LED sources, the internal structure has been fine-tuned for a smoother daytime running light illumination sequence. The 22-inch dual five-spoke wheels on the sides retain the same design as the previous model, with tire specifications still being Pirelli P Zero performance tires sized at 285/30 R22 for both front and rear. At the rear, the RS-specific diffuser and quad oval exhaust layout remain unchanged, but the taillight group now features dynamic flowing turn signals for enhanced nighttime recognition.
Stepping inside, the interior layout of the 2023 RS6 Avant is largely consistent with the previous model, retaining the Audi family’s signature virtual cockpit. The dashboard uses a combination of soft-touch plastic, Alcantara suede, and metal trims, maintaining the luxurious feel and quality of a performance car. In terms of core features, the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system remain the same size, but the response speed of the infotainment system has slightly improved, and CarPlay connectivity is more stable. The HUD heads-up display system now offers higher display precision, showing navigation, speed, driving modes, and other information simultaneously. As for the seats, the front seats are still four-way electric adjustable sports seats with massage functions. The side bolsters provide strong support, and the Alcantara backrests and cushions offer sufficient friction to keep the body securely in place during spirited driving. The rear seats provide about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom; the middle floor slightly protrudes, but it’s still comfortable enough for short trips. Regarding storage space, the trunk has a standard capacity of 565 liters, which can be expanded to 1,680 liters by folding down the rear seats, easily accommodating two 28-inch suitcases and one 20-inch carry-on. The front center armrest compartment and door storage slots are also spacious enough for daily use.
The dynamic performance is the core strength of the RS6 Avant. The 2023 model is still equipped with the 4.0T V8 twin-turbo engine, with the same specifications: a maximum horsepower of 600PS, peak torque of 800Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel-drive system, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds. During actual driving, switching to dynamic mode makes the throttle extremely responsive. At launch, the tires will experience slight slippage (when ESC is off), and the push-back sensation persists from 2000rpm to 5000rpm. Overtaking only requires a deep press of the gas pedal, and the transmission swiftly downshifts by 2-3 gears, delivering power with directness and linearity. In economy mode, the engine feels less prominent, and the throttle response is gentler, which is suitable for daily commutes. In terms of handling, the adaptive damping suspension performs more delicately than the previous model: in sport mode, the suspension provides excellent support, keeping body roll under 15 degrees during cornering, while the steering precision is high with virtually no free play. In comfort mode, the suspension absorbs most small road bumps, and the impact over speed bumps is less harsh compared to the previous model. The quattro all-wheel-drive system prioritizes rear-wheel power distribution; in dynamic mode, you can feel a higher proportion of torque directed to the rear wheels, improving its cornering trajectory.
In terms of fuel consumption, we tested it under mixed driving conditions (30% city congestion + 70% highway cruising), and the fuel consumption was about 13.2L per 100km, slightly higher than the official 12.4L, mainly due to frequent stop-and-go in city traffic. During highway cruising (120km/h), fuel consumption was about 9.5L, which meets the expectations for the 4.0T V8 engine. In terms of noise control, during regular cruising (80km/h), the noise inside the car mainly comes from the tires, while wind noise is well controlled; in dynamic mode, the exhaust sound is amplified through the in-car audio system (can be turned off) but is not harsh. The seat massage function is very practical during long-distance drives as it helps to relieve lower back fatigue.
In summary, the core upgrades of the 2023 Audi RS6 Avant focus on exterior details and interior system optimization, while the core strengths in power and handling remain unchanged. Compared to the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate in the same segment (with a Malaysian guide price of approximately RM 1,150,000), the RS6 Avant has a price advantage, and the quattro all-wheel-drive system's stability is better suited for the rainy conditions in Southeast Asia. As for the BMW M5 Competition Touring (not officially available in Malaysia yet), the RS6 Avant's practicality and brand appeal better meet the needs of family users. This car is suitable for two types of people: performance enthusiasts who pursue extreme performance while also needing to accommodate family travel, and high-end users who value luxury quality and practicality.
Although it is only a facelift, the 2023 Audi RS6 Avant still maintains its core characteristics of "balancing performance and practicality." It is not just a car that pursues speed like a pure sports car; it is a versatile "all-rounder" that can handle daily commuting, long-distance travel, and occasional track days. If your budget is between RM 1,000,000 and RM 1,100,000, and you are looking for a performance car that is both prestigious and practical, the RS6 Avant remains an unmissable choice.
