In recent years, Malaysia's performance car market has been heating up, with consumers showing increasing demand for models that combine daily practicality with driving pleasure. The four-door hatchback performance car segment has thus garnered more attention. The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT, as a popular new generation model in this segment, has undergone upgrades in configuration details and materials while retaining the classic 6-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive system. To verify whether this car can strike a better balance between being a "driver's car" and a "family car," we conducted both a static experience and a dynamic test drive.

In terms of appearance, the 2025 GR Corolla continues the sporty design of its predecessor, with a compact and dynamic overall silhouette. The front features a blacked-out honeycomb air intake grille, paired with sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides, giving it a highly recognizable look. The lower part of the front bumper incorporates a more aggressive front lip design, further emphasizing its performance attributes. The side profile maintains the four-door hatchback layout, with 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 235/40 R18 tires, giving it a stable stance. A character line extends from the front fender to the rear, echoing the blacked-out side skirts and adding layers to the side profile. At the rear, the LED taillights on both sides are connected by a black decorative strip, and there are dual circular exhaust pipes below. A small spoiler on the trunk lid adds a touch of sportiness to the vehicle.

Opening the door reveals significant changes in the interior. The 2025 GR Corolla adopts a black-based interior design, with red stitching on areas such as the seats and steering wheel, creating a sporty atmosphere. The center console has a simple layout, with a 9-inch central touchscreen in the middle that supports Bluetooth, CarPlay, and other features, offering smooth operation. Below the screen, some physical buttons remain, making it convenient for blind operation while driving. Regarding materials, the upper part of the instrument panel is wrapped in soft-touch materials, which feel more upscale compared to the previous generation. In terms of configuration, the new car comes standard with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, HUD heads-up display, dual-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry, enhancing its practicality.

In terms of space, the 2025 GR Corolla has a body size of 4408mm×1851mm×1479mm and a wheelbase of 2640mm, which is basically unchanged from the previous generation. The front seats support 6-way manual adjustment and offer good support for the driver. The rear space is average, providing about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom for a 175cm passenger, which meets basic daily family needs. For storage, the front center armrest box and door storage compartments offer enough space for items like phones and water bottles. The trunk has a standard capacity of approximately 361 liters, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold configuration, allowing storage of larger items and providing strong practicality.

In the power department, the 2025 GR Corolla is equipped with a 1.6T inline three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 221kW (300PS) and a peak torque of 400N·m. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.3 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is prompt when starting, with the turbo kicking in around 1500rpm and providing ample low-end torque. The wide maximum torque platform ranges between 3000-5500rpm, offering powerful mid-range acceleration. Overtaking only requires a deep press on the accelerator, and power is delivered continuously. The gear shifts are precise, with a moderate travel distance and a strong engagement feel, while the clutch pedal's weight is also relatively light, making it easier for beginners to adapt.

In terms of handling, the new car adopts a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear double-wishbone independent suspension. The suspension is tuned to be on the stiffer side, effectively suppressing body roll. In corners, the steering is precise and with minimal play, offering good vehicle follow-through. The addition of a full-time four-wheel-drive system enhances the vehicle's grip when cornering, maintaining stability even when taking corners at high speed. On bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most minor vibrations, but larger bumps such as speed bumps transmit noticeable vibrations to the interior, which is a common trait in performance cars.

In terms of driving comfort and specific performance tests, the 2025 GR Corolla performs well in noise control. The cabin noise is about 45 decibels at idle and about 65 decibels while cruising at 120 km/h, with most of the noise coming from tire road noise, which does not affect in-cabin conversations. In terms of fuel efficiency, we conducted a test drive of approximately 200 kilometers on mixed road conditions, and the average fuel consumption was around 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers. For a 300-horsepower performance car, this is a reasonable figure. As for braking performance, the combination of front ventilated and rear ventilated disc brakes provides stable performance, with a 100-0 km/h braking distance of about 36 meters. Even after multiple braking scenarios, there is no significant heat fade.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT lies in its balance—it retains the driving fun brought by a manual transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system while enhancing everyday practicality through upgraded configurations. Compared to its rival, the Honda Civic Type R, the GR Corolla is more competitively priced and comes standard with a full-time four-wheel-drive system, offering better stability on slippery roads. Compared to the Volkswagen Golf R, the manual transmission better meets the needs of consumers pursuing a more engaging driving experience.

This car is suitable for two types of people: one group includes young customers who prioritize driving enjoyment and are looking for a performance car that they can enjoy on weekends but also use for daily commutes and occasional family trips; the other group consists of performance car enthusiasts who have an affinity for the Toyota brand. The GR Corolla's reliability and customization potential are also key selling points.

In conclusion, the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT is a performance car that is both "fun and practical." It strikes a balance between driving enjoyment and daily usability, offering strong competitiveness among vehicles in the same class. If you're looking for a car that can satisfy your driving desires while also being reliable for family use, this car is worth considering.

As the owner of the 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT, after driving it for three months, I truly feel I made the right choice! First of all, the interior deserves a full 5-star rating—the Alcantara steering wheel feels amazing to grip, the 12.3-inch full digital dashboard and 9-inch central control screen are packed with a sense of technology, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is especially practical in Malaysia’s hot weather. Overall craftsmanship is excellent, and the sport seats are highly supportive, making long drives comfortable and not tiring. In terms of performance, I’d give it 4 stars. The 1.6T turbo engine with 300 horsepower is a delight for overtaking on highways, and the 5.3-second hundred-kilometer acceleration delivers an explosive feeling. The manual transmission paired with the four-wheel-drive system is a joy to use on Genting’s mountain roads during weekends—precise and stable cornering. However, in Kuala Lumpur’s congested roads, the manual can be a bit tiresome, and there’s some low-speed gear-shifting hesitation in the city, which might be due to my driving skills not being fully in sync yet. For safety features, I’ll also give 4 stars. Standard features include 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning; the adaptive cruise control (ACC) is incredibly helpful for long drives on the North-South Expressway. However, it would be perfect if the reversing camera could be upgraded to a 360-degree system. As for the exterior, I'd rate it 4 stars as well. The aggressive front fascia and wide fenders give it a strong sporty vibe, LED headlights are bright enough at night, but the rear design could be a bit more exaggerated to better match the performance car persona. Overall, driving this car in Malaysia, whether for daily commuting or occasional spirited drives, is a great fit!

As the owner of a 2025 GR Corolla MT, I’ve been driving it for almost three months now, so here’s my real experience in Malaysia~ Exterior gets 4 stars – the classic Corolla silhouette with the addition of GR sport package, honeycomb grille, wide fenders, and 18-inch wheels make it highly recognizable in the traffic on Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. Especially at night when the LED taillights light up, it looks really energetic! However, personally, I think the side profile could be a little more aggressive since it's a performance car; that's where 1 point is deducted. Performance deserves 4 stars as well – the 1.6T + 6MT + AWD is absolutely thrilling! Driving up Genting's mountain roads on weekends, the 300hp delivers power on demand, and the 400Nm torque explodes after 3000 RPM. The AWD provides excellent grip when cornering, and the manual shift feels very tight and precise. However, in city traffic jams, using the clutch does get a bit tiring, especially during morning peak hours on Jalan Bukit Bintang, when it's stop-and-go and your foot gets sore – but that’s a common issue with manual cars and is acceptable~ Interior deserves a full 5 stars! The fully digital instrument panel + 9-inch central control screen gives off strong tech vibes, and the HUD heads-up display makes checking your speed super convenient on the highway. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning cools down quickly even in Malaysia’s 35-degree heat, and the Alcantara material seats are both well-cushioned and breathable, so you won’t feel stuffy even on long drives. The biggest surprise is that the rear space isn’t cramped at all. I took some friends on a trip to Malacca, and three adults sat in the back without complaining – this is much more practical than many two-door performance cars~ Overall, as a performance car that’s both a daily driver and capable on winding roads, it’s a delight to use in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT, after driving it in Malaysia for almost three months, I’m overall quite satisfied! First about the exterior: it has the classic Toyota sporty style, with a honeycomb front grille matched with smoked LED headlights. Driving it on the highways of Kuala Lumpur attracts a lot of attention, though the paint is a bit thin. Last time on Jalan Bukit Bintang, a small stone chip left a little mark, which was a bit heartbreaking. As for the interior, the Alcantara sport seats provide great support, especially when going through mountain roads. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and the 9-inch central control screen are very clear, though there are still quite a lot of plastic parts. In particular, the area on the passenger side feels less premium to the touch. The safety features are quite comprehensive: 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning are all included. Last time on a rainy mountain road in Penang, I almost had a rear-end collision, but the warning system alerted me in time, which was very reassuring. However, the ACC cruise control can occasionally respond a bit slowly in the traffic jams typical of Malaysia. Overall, as a performance car, it's still very worthwhile for its price in Malaysia!

Owner of 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT
Brothers, I've been driving this 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT for almost three months now, and let me first rave about its exterior! Every time I park it outside the Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur or on the old streets of George Town, Penang, the turning heads are off the charts—those wide fenders paired with the matte black 18-inch wheels and that large honeycomb front grille, the sporty vibe is practically bursting off the screen. Last week, I took it for a spin on the mountain roads of Genting, and the body lines felt incredibly agile through the curves. Even a foreigner driving a GTI rolled down their window to give me a thumbs-up. The exterior totally deserves a solid 5/5! However, I'd only rate the interior a 4/5. While the Alcantara steering wheel and the supportive sport seats are excellent, and the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel is very clear, the center screen is only 9 inches—definitely smaller compared to many modern EVs. Additionally, the door panels and the lower part of the center console are made of hard plastic, which feels a bit cheap for a car priced at 360,000 MYR. That said, it’s still a performance car, so luxury isn’t the main focus. The practical features, like the dual-zone air conditioning and HUD head-up display, are quite useful. Overall, I'm still satisfied!

As the owner of the 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT for almost two months, I'm quite satisfied overall! To start with the exterior, although it’s not the type that wows you at first glance, the sporty kit from the GR series is really timeless— the honeycomb front grille, wide wheel arches, and 18-inch wheels all catch attention when cruising on the highways in Kuala Lumpur. The only small regret is that the car paint tends to accumulate dust under the tropical sun, so it requires frequent cleaning. A solid 4 out of 5. As for performance, the combination of the 1.6T three-cylinder turbo engine and the 6-speed manual transmission is absolutely enjoyable! Malaysia has lots of mountainous roads, especially the consecutive curves when descending from Genting Highlands. The precise handling of the manual gear plus the all-wheel-drive traction makes cornering extremely stable. Its 5.3-second 0-100km/h acceleration is also pretty handy when overtaking on highways. However, pressing the clutch in city traffic can be tiring sometimes, and occasionally my foot gets sore, but for a performance car, this small inconvenience is acceptable. Another solid 4 out of 5. As for the interior, it has a strong sporty vibe— the Alcantara material on the steering wheel and seats offers excellent support, and I don’t feel fatigued even on long journeys. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument and 9-inch central control screen provide enough techy feel, while the dual-zone automatic air conditioning cools down the cabin quickly in Malaysia's hot weather. The only drawback is that there are quite a lot of plastic components in the interior, and the attention to detail isn't very refined. I think 4 out of 5 is reasonable. All in all, as a daily commute car that can sometimes go wild, it performs quite well under Malaysian road conditions. Worthy of consideration!
