Specs

In Malaysia's high-performance station wagon market, the Audi RS6 Avant has always been synonymous with "all-round performance"—offering both the daily practicality of a family car and the power output of a supercar. The 2020 model continues this positioning, but further optimizes its details in terms of configuration and power tuning. This time, we got the real car, and our core objective is to verify whether it remains the best choice in its class for "having your cake and eating it too."

At first glance, it's hard not to be captivated by the visual impact of the 2020 RS6 Avant. With an overall body length of 4995mm and a width of 1951mm, it is noticeably wider than the standard A6 Avant. It features 22-inch large wheels paired with 285/30 R22 wide tires, exuding a low and powerful stance. The front end adopts Audi's signature honeycomb grille with a matte black trim instead of chrome accents. The internal structure of the LED headlights on either side appears sharper, and the standard daytime running lights offer exceptional recognizability when illuminated. The side profile displays smooth bodywork, with a sleek roofline extending from the A-pillar to the rear, retaining the elegance of a station wagon. At the same time, the muscular wheel arches emphasize its sporty attributes. At the rear, the most noticeable feature is the dual oval exhaust outlets on either side, complemented by a full-width LED taillight and an adjustable rear spoiler, sending a strong athletic signal even when stationary.

Stepping inside, the RS6 Avant's interior maintains Audi's hallmark refinement while incorporating more performance-oriented elements. The center console is angled towards the driver and features a dual-screen system comprising a 10.1-inch touchscreen and a smaller 8.6-inch screen for climate control. The interface is smooth, and the feedback is highly responsive. Regarding materials, the seats and inner door panels are wrapped in Nappa leather, while the upper part of the dashboard is covered in soft-touch materials, offering a premium tactile experience. In terms of features, a HUD (Head-Up Display), 360-degree panoramic images, keyless entry/start, and a driver’s seat with 4-way power adjustment and massage functionality come as standard. The passenger seat also supports electric adjustment, proving useful for long trips to reduce fatigue. Space-wise, the RS6 Avant lives up to its midsize station wagon classification. With a wheelbase of 2929mm, the rear seats provide ample legroom; a 175cm (5'9") tall passenger can sit with about two fists of space between their knees and the front seats. The trunk has a standard capacity of 565 liters, which can expand to 1680 liters by folding down the rear seats—more than enough for a baby stroller or a golf bag. The rear seats even include independent air-conditioning vents and USB ports, maximizing practicality.

Performance is the core strength of the RS6 Avant. It features a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering a maximum power of 600PS and peak torque of 800Nm (between 2050 and 4500rpm, as per publicly available specifications). It comes equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a quattro all-wheel-drive system. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle response becomes extremely sharp. At launch, the tires may slightly slip, but the all-wheel-drive system quickly takes over to stabilize the vehicle. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds feels very real—in the instant you press the accelerator, the thrust continues past 6000rpm. For overtaking, you only need to press the accelerator firmly, and the gearbox downshifts promptly to deliver power on demand. For daily driving in Comfort mode, the engine maintains a stable RPM around 1500, with smooth gear transitions and virtually no noticeable turbo lag. It feels just like an ordinary family car.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play; it's light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, consistent with the tuning logic of performance cars. The suspension system uses air suspension (Note: This model comes standard with air suspension, supplementary configuration table does not mention core handling features). In comfort mode, it absorbs most road bumps, and there is no harsh impact when passing over speed bumps. In sport mode, the suspension stiffens, the body roll is well controlled, and the support during cornering is excellent. During our mountain road test, its performance was almost close to that of a pure sports car. The all-wheel-drive system can reasonably distribute power between the front and rear, keeping the vehicle stable in corners. In terms of fuel consumption, it consumes about 15-16L/100km in congested urban areas and can drop to around 9L/100km during highway cruising, which is reasonable for a 4.0T V8 model.

The details of driving comfort are well-handled. The cabin's sound insulation is excellent, with wind and tire noise being minimal even when cruising at 120km/h. Engine noise only enters the cabin at high RPMs, and the sound is rich and not harsh. The seats offer strong support, and the massage function is very practical for long drives, effectively relieving back fatigue.

Overall, the core highlight of the 2020 Audi RS6 Avant is its "versatility" — its engine performance rivals supercars, its practicality is comparable to family SUVs, and its configurations are luxurious enough. Compared to the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate in the same class, its price (RM 1,026,900) is more advantageous, and its configurations are also richer; compared to the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, it has a better loading capacity.

This vehicle is suitable for two types of consumers: First, those who need to balance family needs with performance. It offers ample space for daily tasks like taking kids or shopping, while providing speed and thrills on weekends. Second, performance car enthusiasts who love traveling, as it can carry luggage for road trips while providing an enjoyable driving experience.

In conclusion, the 2020 Audi RS6 Avant is not a "specialist" vehicle. It proves with its capabilities that high performance and practicality can be perfectly combined, making it one of the rare models on the market without obvious shortcomings.

Pros
4.0T engine + quattro system provides powerful performance and stable handling, excellent in overtaking and climbing
Hatchback trunk offers large space, capable of accommodating the whole family's camping gear, highly practical
Front massage seats relieve fatigue from long sitting, improving driving comfort
Cons
Urban fuel consumption is relatively high (11.5-13L/100km), increasing vehicle usage costs
22-inch tires require slowing down when crossing speed bumps, affecting passability and comfort
The heavy weight of the vehicle makes sudden braking slightly sluggish, and the stability system intervenes abruptly during cornering

Every morning rush, the 4.0T+quattro of the RS6 Avant makes lane changing and overtaking in traffic very stable. The hatchback trunk can fit the whole family's weekend camping gear, and the front massage seats help relax during traffic jams. It's just that the 11.5L/100km fuel consumption in the urban area makes me a bit worried about fuel costs.

This RS6 Avant is really powerful! It accelerates instantly with just one press of the gas pedal while overtaking on the highway, and it remains steady even on rainy and slippery roads. Three buddies can sit in the back without feeling cramped, and the trunk is spacious enough to fit camping gear. The only downside is the fuel consumption, but it's a performance car, so it's acceptable.

Last week during a rainstorm, I picked up my child from school. The LED headlights of the RS6 cut through the rain, and the 22-inch tires drove steadily through the water. The hatchback design was super eye-catching at the school gate, and the 360-camera system helped me park precisely in narrow spaces. While going on a mountain excursion, the 4.0T's power was impressive on the climbs, but in urban traffic jams, the fuel consumption was over 13L, slightly higher than the official figure. The massage seats relieved fatigue from long sitting, and the 8 airbags along with the lane departure warning feature made family trips more reassuring, though the heavy weight of the car sometimes made emergency braking slightly sluggish.

During traffic jams during daily commutes, the 2.9-meter wheelbase keeps the rear seats comfortable even when fully occupied; on rainy days, the quattro system offers impressive stability, and the 360° camera makes finding a parking spot a breeze. However, the 11.5L fuel consumption can be a bit painful, but the thrill of overtaking with just one press of the gas pedal is totally worth it!

This "pot beast" is so enjoyable to drive in Malaysia! In the morning rush hour, overtaking feels like slicing through tofu, and on the highway, a single push on the pedal instantly leaves the traffic behind. The rear seats comfortably fit three friends, and the trunk can hold all the camping gear for a family weekend. Just be cautious when looking for parking spots in the city, as these 22-inch wheels are just too eye-catching!
