With the local market's C-Segment electric SUV options becoming increasingly diverse, consumers are demanding more "balance"—seeking both the quality feel of a brand and no compromises on range, features, or driving experience. The 2024 BMW iX2 xDrive30, as the newest member of BMW’s pure electric family, directly addresses this need by offering all-wheel drive, a 400-kilometer range, and a wealth of smart features as its core selling points. In this test drive, our main focus was to verify whether it can strike a balance between the "luxury brand flair" and "daily practicality."

Seeing the car in person for the first time, the design of the iX2 is impactful and memorable. The overall lines lean towards a sporty style, and the front lacks the traditional fuel vehicle’s intake grille, replaced instead by a closed double-kidney design, with blue decorative strips added to signify its electric vehicle identity. The sharp LED headlight assembly naturally connects to the edges of the grille, giving it a high degree of recognition when lit. The side profile features smooth lines, with a fastback shape extending from the A-pillar to the rear, making it look more like a coupe than a traditional SUV; the 20-inch large wheels paired with low-profile tires further reinforce its sporty appeal. The design of the rear is relatively straightforward, with horizontally arranged LED taillights that form a distinctive L-shaped light strip when lit. The diffuser-like design on the lower part of the rear bumper complements the overall style, with no unnecessary adornments.

Opening the door, the interior exudes both a sense of luxury and technology. The dashboard has a layered design, with the upper layer wrapped in soft materials and accented with silver trims that feel pleasant to touch. The instrument cluster and central control screen are seamlessly connected, measuring 10.25 inches and 10.7 inches respectively. The interface is logically laid out, supports touch controls, and responds quickly. A multi-functional steering wheel comes standard, with controls for driving assistance on the left and multimedia functions on the right; the button layout is rational and allows for easy operation without looking. The HUD head-up display system showcases speed, navigation, and other information, reducing the need for the driver to look down. Features like keyless entry and ignition, along with electrically adjustable front seats, come standard, offering sufficient convenience. As for rear seating space, the 2692mm wheelbase performs decently; passengers around 175cm tall will have about two fists of legroom in the back. However, headroom might feel slightly constrained due to the fastback design, though it’s sufficient for daily family use. The trunk capacity is 525L, and the rear seats can fold down in a 40:20:40 split, which expands the storage space significantly—enough to fit a baby stroller or suitcase without issue.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, the first impression is that the seat offers good support, and the electric adjustment feature allows for finding a suitable driving position quickly. Once the vehicle starts, the cabin is very quiet, with almost no audible motor noise. The iX2 xDrive30 is equipped with dual motors at the front and rear, delivering a combined output of 230kW and 494N·m of torque, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.6 seconds. In real-world driving, the vehicle responds quickly at launch; pressing the accelerator pedal immediately delivers power output. Mid-to-high acceleration is also very linear, and overtaking maneuvers don’t require pressing the pedal too hard. It offers multiple driving modes: in economy mode, power output is relatively moderate and suitable for daily commuting, while in sport mode, power response becomes more aggressive, and the steering wheel feels heavier, adding to driving pleasure. Regarding the chassis, the combination of a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension leans towards comfort in its tuning. Speed bumps or uneven roads are handled well, with most vibrations effectively filtered out to avoid harshness. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, while the all-wheel-drive system enhances stability, so there’s no sense of floating.

Range and charging performance are among the core metrics of electric vehicles. The official electric range of the iX2 is 417-449km. In our testing under mixed road conditions, including urban congestion, highway cruising, and suburban roads, the actual range achievement rate was about 80%, with an electricity consumption of approximately 18kWh per 100km. This performance meets expectations. In fast-charging mode, it takes only 29 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while slow charging takes 3.75 hours. For daily use, fast charging satisfies emergency needs, while slow charging is suitable for overnight home charging. In terms of driving assistance features, ACC adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard. On the highway, enabling ACC allows the vehicle to automatically follow the car ahead, reducing driving fatigue. The 360-degree panoramic view and automatic parking functions are very user-friendly for novice drivers, providing a clear view of the surroundings during parking.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2024 BMW iX2 xDrive30 are evident: BMW’s brand appeal, the stable driving experience brought by all-wheel drive, rich intelligent features, and a practical range in the 400km class. Compared to similar electric SUVs, such as the Tesla Model Y or the Volvo C40 Recharge, the iX2 offers better luxury and driving quality, more comprehensive configurations, and, although slightly higher in price, delivers brand value and overall performance that justify the cost.

The target audience for this car is clear: family users who value brand quality, need a vehicle for daily commutes and weekend short trips, and have requirements for features and driving comfort; or young people who pursue luxury and technology, favor a sporty design, and seek the environmental and low-cost benefits of an electric vehicle.

In conclusion, the 2024 BMW iX2 xDrive30 is a well-balanced electric SUV with no significant drawbacks. It offers luxury, practicality, and a great driving experience to meet the needs of most consumers, making it a strong contender in the C-segment electric SUV market.

Previously, I drove a fuel-powered SUV, and I switched to the iX2 to experience the thrill of pure electric. Exterior and interior each get 4 points—the kidney grille and coupe-style design are youthful enough, but the interior stitching is occasionally a bit crooked, minor flaws. Safety gets 5 points; last week during KL's early morning rush hour, the car in front braked suddenly, and the automatic braking brought the car to an immediate stop. It gave me a cold sweat but saved lives. Took my family to Genting Highlands over the weekend. Going uphill, the xDrive was incredibly stable, and the battery range was sufficient. Upon reaching the mountain top, there was still 30% charge left. Fast charging took 45 minutes to reach 80%, just enough time for a cup of teh tarik. The only downside is that the middle floor of the rear seat is a bit high, causing leg discomfort on long rides. But for Malaysian roads, this C-class electric SUV is well worth the RM297k price!

Last week, I took my family on an outing to the foot of Genting Mountain. The mountain road was slippery after the rain, but the xDrive all-wheel drive was very stable. The 5.6-second acceleration made overtaking clean and sharp, although the 2-ton weight made it a bit shaky around sharp corners, so deducting 1 point for performance seems fair. Harman Kardon sounded amazing in the tunnel, and the HUD head-up display allowed for navigation without looking down. The interior truly deserves its 5 points. The coupe shape turned heads, but the rear headroom was a bit tight, so 4 points for appearance is reasonable.

During the morning rush hour traffic jam, the acceleration of this iX2 is really enjoyable. Just a light press on the pedal and overtaking becomes effortless. Having three friends in the back seat doesn’t feel cramped, and there's enough space in the trunk for a stroller and a backpack. However, the interior does feel a bit plasticky, but once the Harman Kardon sound system is on, even being stuck in traffic becomes fun!

Previously drove a fuel SUV, switched to the iX2 xDrive30 for BMW's handling and the cost-saving benefits of pure electric. Safety gets 4 points; 6 airbags + full-speed ACC perform steadily during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, and the automatic emergency braking helped me avoid a sudden lane change by a motorcycle. Appearance gets 4 points; the coupe-style design gets lots of attention, but the rear design is slightly conservative. Went to Penang with family over the weekend, and the 5.6-second acceleration on the highway made overtaking easy. The 420km range was just enough for a round trip, and a 40-minute fast charge allowed us to recharge without delaying our meal. The downside is the slightly cramped rear headroom; for someone 180cm tall, it feels a bit tight over long periods. Overall, this car is very suitable for use in Malaysia, where the charging network is sufficient, and it feels much better to drive than a fuel car!
