The Malaysian pure electric SUV market is gradually heating up. Consumers want the low operating costs of electric vehicles, but they are unwilling to compromise on the driving texture and space practicality of traditional fuel cars. German brands have always been highly regarded in this segment. Today, we are going to talk about the 2021 BMW iX3 M Sport Inspiring, as the brand's first pure electric mid-size SUV, its core selling point lies in continuing BMW's classic rear-wheel-drive handling genes while packaging luxury configurations and an official range of 461km at a more affordable price range. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether it can strike a balance between "electrification" and the "BMW essence," and whether it is truly suitable for the daily needs of local family users.

At first glance, the iX3 M Sport Inspiring doesn’t feel like an "aggressive" electric vehicle. The overall design is adjusted based on the X3 fuel version, maintaining the rugged contour of a mid-size SUV. The addition of the M Sport package adds a bit of sportiness — the darkened kidney grille, although sealed, still has its classic contour, and the surrounding chrome trims have been replaced with blue elements, a subtle marker of its identity as an EV. The side profile of the car shows smooth lines, with 19-inch wheels paired with 245/50 R19 tires, achieving proportional coordination while also considering comfort. The L-shaped tail lights are highly recognizable at the rear, and the lower diffuser design also features blue accents. The overall design retains BMW's family traits while implying its electric characteristics through details.

Sitting inside the car, the familiar BMW layout is immediately apparent, but materials and configurations have been upgraded significantly. The dashboard and interior sides of the doors are wrapped in soft materials, paired with metallic trims, creating a sense of luxury. The 12.3-inch full-LCD instrument panel and the center control touchscreen of the same size are integrated together, providing clear displays and smooth operation. They support both touch and iDrive knob control methods, making it easy for BMW users to get accustomed to. In terms of configurations, the front seats support electric adjustment and heating and have a driver’s memory function, which is very convenient for daily use. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning, independent rear air outlets, and a 12-speaker sound system are all included. Additionally, keyless entry/start, rain-sensing wipers, and other thoughtful configurations ensure practicality and convenience for family users.

In terms of space performance, the iX3 has a wheelbase of 2864mm, providing ample space in the front seats. Passengers with a height of 180cm have a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. Rear-seat space is similarly generous, with more than two fists' worth of legroom, and the flat floor allows the middle passenger to sit comfortably. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration, with a trunk volume of 510L in the standard state, expandable to a larger space when folded down, making it easy to accommodate strollers or suitcases. The car's storage compartments are also abundant, with sizable central armrest boxes and door panel storage slots. The front row is even equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet for convenient device charging.

Regarding dynamic driving, the iX3 M Sport Inspiring is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor with a maximum horsepower of 286PS and a peak torque of 400N·m, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.8 seconds. In actual driving, the throttle (electric pedal) response is very linear, and the differences between the driving modes are noticeable: in Eco Pro mode, the power output is gentle, suitable for daily commuting, while in Sport mode, it becomes significantly more aggressive. The pushback feeling when pressing hard on the accelerator is strong enough, instilling high confidence when overtaking. The rear-wheel-drive layout retains BMW's handling genes, with precise steering and minimal play in the steering wheel. The car remains stable during cornering. The chassis uses a front McPherson independent suspension, tuned to favor comfort without losing resilience. It filters out small road bumps very effectively, and there’s no sense of looseness when going over speed bumps or large potholes, while still offering a certain level of road feedback.

In terms of range, we tested approximately 200km under mixed road conditions (urban congestion + highway cruising), with air conditioning and audio turned on throughout the trip. The displayed range achievement rate was about 85%, and based on this ratio, achieving 390km on a full charge should not be a problem, which is enough to cover a week of daily commuting needs. In terms of energy consumption, the electricity consumption per 100 kilometers is around 18kWh, which is considered average among mid-size electric SUVs. Noise control is well done, with almost no audible motor noise at low speeds, and wind noise and tire noise at highway speeds are within an acceptable range. Combined with comfortable seats, long-distance driving is not too tiring.

Compared with models in the same class, such as Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, the advantages of the iX3 M Sport Inspiring lie in its more refined luxury interior, more robust chassis feel, and BMW's consistent handling performance. In terms of price, it is slightly higher than the Model Y, but it offers richer configurations, such as heated seats and a 12-speaker audio system as standard equipment. Overall, this car is suitable for families who want both the environmental and low operating cost benefits of an electric vehicle, as well as driving quality and luxury features—it doesn't overly pursue radical design or extreme range but strikes a great balance in terms of overall performance.

In summary, the 2021 BMW iX3 M Sport Inspiring is a very "BMW" electric vehicle. It does not sacrifice the brand's core strengths for the sake of electrification, while also meeting the needs of family users in terms of configuration and practicality. If you're a BMW fan and want to try electrification, or need a balanced, reliable mid-size electric SUV as a family vehicle, the iX3 M Sport Inspiring is worth considering.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Suddenly, heavy rain poured down. On the slippery mountain roads, the vehicle stability control and hill-start assist were fully engaged. The 73.8kWh battery supported the round trip and still had 30% range remaining. However, the leather seats felt a bit stuffy after being exposed to the sun, but the Harman Kardon sound system managed to drown out the sound of the rain. The 20-inch wheels felt a bit stiff over bumpy terrain, but the 360-degree camera system made reversing on the muddy paths stress-free. The interior stitching lacked some refinement, or else it could have been a 5-star experience.

This appearance turns heads to the max! Always catching eyes on the road, much more satisfying than that little performance regret.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we started on the winding mountain road, we encountered a sudden rainstorm. The rear-wheel drive of the M Sport felt as steady as if it were glued to the ground on the slippery curves. Acceleration to overtake in 6.8 seconds was absolutely seamless, with the motor showing no hint of lag. When passing through a water puddle, the 360-degree camera clearly displayed the tire positions, and the active braking gently reminded me of a truck ahead that suddenly slowed down while I was distracted by navigation. Parked at the orchard entrance, the silver-gray car body sprinkled with mud drops seemed even sportier, and even the orchard farmer gave us an extra bunch of mangosteens.

Previously drove a fuel-powered X3, switched to iX3 Impressive to experience electric driving plus BMW's handling. The M package exterior looks sporty, and the LED headlights have strong penetration in the scorching sun. The interior features Harman Kardon sound system, which is very soothing during morning traffic jams, and the HUD navigation allows you to keep your eyes on the road. In terms of performance, the rear-wheel drive accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, making overtaking a thrill. On weekend trips to Genting Highlands, the hill-start assist and power reserves provide stability. However, the 461 km range drops by 20% in hot weather, and fast charging stations are still scarce in East Malaysia. That said, at RM343k, it’s overall worth it and offers more driving pleasure compared to competitors like the fully electric GLC, though the rear air conditioning airflow could be stronger.
