BMW iX3 Review

The high-end electric SUV market in Malaysia is gradually heating up. When choosing a D-segment fully electric model, many consumers value brand quality while also focusing on range practicality and feature richness—this is precisely the target battlefield of the BMW iX3. As a core model of the BMW brand in the pure electric SUV segment, it retains the familiar outline of the petrol version X3 while incorporating an all-electric drivetrain, all the while maintaining BMW's signature handling tuning. In this test drive, we aim to verify two things: First, whether it can balance range and driving pleasure during daily commutes and short trips, and second, whether its configuration level aligns with its positioning as a high-end electric SUV.
The exterior of the iX3 does not overly emphasize radical electric design. Its overall lines remain consistent with the petrol version X3, still projecting a steady midsize SUV stance. The most noticeable difference on the front is the closed double kidney grille, highlighted with blue trim, which reduces wind resistance and clearly identifies it as an electric vehicle. LED headlights come standard across all variants, with sharp styling and automatic lighting functions, while the daytime running lights maintain BMW's recognizable "angel eye" design. The side profile features a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, paired with 19-inch or 20-inch multi-spoke wheels (depending on the trim), giving a well-proportioned and balanced visual effect. Changes at the rear are concentrated on the bumper area, where the exhaust layout has been replaced by a minimalist diffuser design, and the L-shaped light strip in the taillights offers high recognition when lit.
Upon opening the door, the interior layout shows little difference from the petrol version X3, still adhering to BMW's classic driver-oriented design. The central console combines soft leather with metallic trim, giving a solid and high-quality tactile feel to areas within reach. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen make up the dual-screen system, with clear screen resolution and smooth touch responsiveness, and full support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather, offering a solid grip; buttons on the left control the driver assistance features, while those on the right handle multimedia and voice controls. In terms of features, both the M Sport Inspiring and Impressive trims come with front-row electrically heated seats with driver memory function, and the adjustable range caters to drivers of various heights. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, expanding the cargo space when needed. In terms of space, the 2,864mm wheelbase provides a noticeable advantage. Front passengers enjoy ample headroom, while even with three adults in the rear seat, there is about two fists of legroom left, and the low central floor makes it more comfortable for the middle passenger. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 510L, which is adequate for daily needs like carrying a baby stroller or luggage.
In terms of power, the iX3 is equipped with a rear-mounted single motor across all variants, providing a maximum output of 286PS and a peak torque of 400N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.8 seconds. In real driving conditions, the power response at start-up is very direct, and a light press on the accelerator delivers a smooth surge, sufficient for city commutes even in Eco mode. Switching to Sport mode offers a more aggressive power output, with strong torque bursts for overtaking and solid performance for high-speed acceleration. The chassis employs a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for firmness, retaining BMW's signature handling quality. In urban driving, the suspension absorbs most minor bumps, and rebounds are crisp when crossing speed bumps. On the highway, the vehicle's stability is excellent, the steering precision is high with minimal play, and lane-changing inspires confidence.
In terms of range, the iX3 is equipped with a 73.8kWh lithium battery pack, with an official range of 461km. During our test in mixed conditions (urban congestion + highway cruising) with the air conditioning consistently set at 24℃, the range achievement rate was approximately 80%, and the actual driving range was around 370km. This performance is sufficient for daily commutes and short weekend trips. Regarding charging efficiency, using a DC fast charging station, it takes about 45 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while fully charging with a home AC slow charger takes approximately 8 hours. Noise control is well-handled; wind and tire noise at high speeds are kept within a reasonable range, and the sound of the motor running is almost negligible, creating an overall quiet driving atmosphere. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels, with the highest level providing a markedly strong drag effect, while the lowest level closely simulates the gliding experience of a fuel car. Once accustomed to it, it can significantly improve the range.
In terms of safety features, the iX3 comes standard with six airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and other functions. The 360-degree surround-view camera (available on the Impressive version only) and automatic parking assist can also reduce parking difficulty. Compared to other electric SUVs in the same class, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC, the iX3 has advantages in range efficiency and handling, while the price is relatively more affordable. Compared to the Tesla Model Y, its brand luxury appeal and interior quality stand out more.
Overall, the BMW iX3 is a high-end electric SUV that balances practicality and driving pleasure. It does not excessively focus on electric gimmicks but instead delivers the familiar BMW driving experience, solid configurations, and reliable range performance that meets consumer expectations for an "electric BMW." It is suitable for those who value brand prestige while needing a well-equipped, easy-to-drive pure electric SUV for everyday use—such as families or professionals prioritizing quality of life. If you're looking for an understated yet refined electric SUV, the iX3 is worth considering.
