The Malaysian sports car market has been trending towards a dual upgrade of "performance + intelligence" in recent years. Consumers are now seeking racetrack-level power performance while also valuing the technological features and practicality for daily driving. The 2024 BMW M4 Competition Coupe, as a benchmark model in this segment, not only boosts its maximum power to 530PS in this update but also comes equipped with a 14.9-inch central control screen and HUD head-up display as standard, while making the xDrive all-wheel-drive system standard for the first time. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this new car can balance everyday driving comfort and technological experience while maintaining pure driving pleasure.

From a distance, the 2024 M4 Competition Coupe continues the brand's signature large kidney grille design, with black high-gloss trim inside the grille, paired with sharp LED daytime running lights on both sides, resulting in an extremely high recognition factor. The side profile of the car has smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, which enhances its muscular appearance. The combination of 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels (front tires: 275/35 R19, rear tires: 285/30 R20) further accentuates its sporty stance. At the rear, the quad exhaust layout on both sides corresponds to the smoked LED taillights, while the small spoiler on the trunk lid provides additional downforce at high speeds. The design details align with its performance positioning without being overly showy.

Inside the car, the center console is designed to tilt towards the driver for convenience. The interior predominantly uses black leather matched with silver aluminum trims for an excellent texture. The 14.9-inch touchscreen central control screen is seamlessly connected to the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, running the latest iDrive system, offering fluid user interfaces and supporting wireless CarPlay. The HUD head-up display comes standard, showing information like speed and navigation to minimize distractions while driving. The front seats are electrically adjustable, offering strong bolstering and lumbar support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats are manually adjustable and may feel slightly cramped for adults but are sufficient for short trips. As for storage, the center armrest box and door storage compartments are moderately sized, and the 440L trunk provides enough space to accommodate two carry-on suitcases, meeting daily travel needs.

In terms of performance, the new car is equipped with a 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 390kW (530PS) and a peak torque of 650N·m. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle achieves an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is quick during start-up, and stepping on the throttle produces a strong push-back sensation; overtaking at high speeds is effortless. Switching to Sport+ mode makes the gearbox shifting logic more aggressive, and the exhaust note becomes even deeper and more resonant. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal dead zone, while the combination of MacPherson front suspension and five-link rear suspension provides excellent support in corners, effectively controlling body roll. When facing bumpy roads, the suspension efficiently absorbs vibrations, maintaining in-cabin comfort. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.2L/100km, with actual city driving averaging about 12-13L/100km, while highway driving can drop to 8-9L/100km, which is considered reasonable for a performance sports car.

In terms of ride comfort, the new car performs well in noise control. Wind noise and tire noise are both within acceptable ranges during high-speed driving. The seats balance both wrapping and support, making it less tiring for long drives. The braking system features ventilated discs on both front and rear, with responsive braking and linear pedal feedback, providing sufficient confidence. Moreover, the inclusion of a 360-degree panoramic camera and automatic parking assist makes parking this sports car in narrow parking lots much easier.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 BMW M4 Competition Coupe lie in the power performance upgrade, the standard all-wheel-drive system, and the enhanced tech features. Compared to the 2021 model, the new car’s power has increased by 20PS, its acceleration is faster by 0.4 seconds, and the previously optional xDrive system is now standard. Compared with the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe in the same segment, although the AMG is equipped with a V8 engine, the M4 gains the upper hand in agility and tech features. This car is suitable for consumers who pursue both track driving excitement and daily commuting practicality, especially fitting for performance car enthusiasts aged 30-45 with a certain economic foundation.

In conclusion, the 2024 BMW M4 Competition Coupe, while maintaining its pure sporty genes, further enhances the convenience and comfort of daily driving, making it a versatile sports car that balances performance and practicality.

Previously, I drove a 3 Series, always feeling it lacked some passion. After comparing the aggressiveness of the C63, I still chose the M4 for its precision. I give safety 4 points, as it lacks a 360-degree camera, so parking in narrow alleys requires extra caution. Interior gets a solid 5 points, no complaints there. The Harman Kardon sound system is super healing during traffic jams. Performance gets 4 points—the DCT shifts incredibly fast, and on weekends driving along the highway, the 3.0T engine provides full-on thrill. However, the fuel consumption is much higher than the official 8.3L; in the city, it can reach 12L. During morning traffic when idling, the auto start-stop feature can get annoying; turning it off uses extra gas. That said, the back seats are fine for occasionally giving friends a ride, and the liftback trunk makes it super convenient to carry a surfboard. This is my joyful beast of a car!

The power of this M4 is really strong, stepping on the accelerator gives a push-back feeling that directly presses me into the seat. So cool!

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered a heavy rain, and the highway in Kuala Lumpur was blocked like a parking lot. The DCT of the M4 had a slight jerk during crawling, but the 3.0T turbo intervened quickly, allowing it to dart forward whenever there was a gap. The LED headlights had strong penetration, but without parking images, reversing in the rain required leaning out to check. The Harman Kardon audio system was stable despite the rain noise, but the seat memory occasionally malfunctioned. The safety features were comprehensive, but the rear-wheel drive needed to be handled carefully on slippery roads; last time on a mountain road curve, it almost slipped. Fuel consumption was higher than the official figure, reaching 12 liters per 100 km in the city, and the 60-liter fuel tank couldn’t last for several days.

"Previously, when I drove the C63 AMG, my friends always teased me about it being a 'gas guzzler.' But after switching to the M4 Competition Coupe, I can finally hold my head high—3.0T inline-six + 8AT. During morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the transmission is as smooth as a CVT, and with a light tap on the accelerator, it keeps up with traffic effortlessly. On weekends, when driving through the winding roads of Genting, the 510 hp in Sport+ mode unleashes instantly, and the grip of the 275/35 R19 front tires is unbelievably solid. The rear end stays planted while cornering. Safety features are maxed out, and the active braking once saved me from a sudden lane change by a motorcycle. The interior is much more refined compared to the old model, but the Alcantara suede can be a hassle in summer as it gets sweat stains easily, so I always keep wet wipes handy. With an average fuel consumption of 9.6L, it's considered fuel-efficient in Malaysia. At a price of RM740,000, it’s worth it!"
