Specs

In the luxury mid-size SUV market in Malaysia, German brands have always occupied a core position. As one of the benchmark models in this segment, the BMW X3 2021 sDrive20i has attracted many consumers who value brand and practicality with its balanced product capabilities. The core selling points of this car lie in BMW's iconic driving dynamics, comprehensive intelligent features, and optimized space. For users looking to own a luxury brand mid-size SUV at the RM300,000 price point, can it truly balance driving pleasure and family needs? This time, we conducted a test drive to verify its real-world performance.

From the exterior, the 2021 X3 sDrive20i continues the tough design style of the BMW family. The front features the iconic kidney grille paired with LED angel eye headlights, offering high recognition; the silver skid plate below the front bumper enhances the off-road aesthetics of the SUV, while the standard front fog lights improve visibility in adverse weather conditions. The side profile of the car is streamlined, with a length of 4708mm and a wheelbase of 2864mm, placing it at the mainstream level in its class. The 19-inch wheels paired with 245/50 R19 tires strike a balance between visual appeal and comfort. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt an L-shaped design, echoing the headlights, while the silver skid plate on the rear bumper and dual exhaust outlets further emphasize the sporty feel.

Inside the car, the luxury and technological ambiance are quite prominent. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metallic trims, which provide a pleasant tactile and visual experience. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and 8.8-inch touchscreen central control display are the highlights of the interior. The instrument cluster offers different display modes, while the central screen supports CarPlay and Android Auto, with smooth operation. The multifunction steering wheel, equipped with paddle shifters, has a comfortable grip. The left-side buttons control multimedia and driver assistance systems. For the seats, the front seats support electric adjustment and memory functions, with firm and moderate padding that ensures comfort during long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, and legroom is generous; even passengers up to 180cm tall will have about two fist-widths of knee space when seated in the back. In terms of storage, the front central armrest compartment and door pockets offer ample storage capacity. The trunk has a base capacity of 550L, which can be expanded to 1600L by folding down the rear seats, meeting the needs of family trips or transporting large items.

In terms of powertrain, the 2021 X3 sDrive20i is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 184PS and a peak torque of 290N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quick in the initial phase, providing good acceleration with light throttle input. The mid-to-high-speed acceleration is smooth, and during overtaking, pressing the throttle harder prompts the gearbox to downshift quickly, delivering linear power output. There are three driving modes: ECO, Comfort, and Sport. In ECO mode, throttle response is milder, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the steering becomes heavier and the power delivery more direct, catering to users seeking driving excitement. Regarding the chassis, the car features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension with a firm tuning. Body roll is minimal during cornering, providing excellent handling. On bumpy roads, the suspension effectively absorbs shocks, maintaining interior comfort. The braking performance is commendable, with a moderate brake pedal travel and linear brake force output. The braking distance from 100km/h is around 38 meters, consistent with the standard for vehicles in its class.

In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted tests under both urban and highway conditions, achieving a combined fuel consumption of approximately 7.5L/100km, which is not much different from the official figure of 7.1L/100km. The fuel economy performance is quite good. As for noise control, the vehicle suppresses wind and tire noise well during high-speed driving, creating a quiet cabin environment that does not affect passengers’ conversations or listening to music.

Overall, the 2021 BMW X3 sDrive20i performs well in aspects such as appearance, interior, power, and space. Compared to competitors in the same segment, its handling and brand influence are advantages, and the configuration is relatively comprehensive. It is suitable for consumers who value the pleasure of driving and a sense of luxury. If you are a family user pursuing a high-quality lifestyle or a young person who enjoys driving, this car is worth considering.

Pros
Powerful performance, 2.0T turbo engine delivers torque at low RPM (1350-1500 RPM), making hill climbing and overtaking effortless
Practical safety features, including active braking, 6 airbags, rain-sensing wipers, and LED lights, providing reassurance in rainy conditions
Spacious interior, the rear seats can comfortably accommodate three big men without feeling cramped, and the rear seats can be folded down to load camping gear, etc.
Cons
The body is relatively wide, making it inconvenient to park in narrow spaces, requiring slow maneuvering.
The size of the central control screen is relatively small (8.8 inches), requiring closer inspection when using navigation.
Some models (sDrive) feel slightly unstable when driving on slippery bends.

This X3 has been driven for almost two years. The start-stop system and automatic air conditioning are very convenient during traffic jams, and it has great power when accelerating. Three big guys in the backseat don't feel cramped. The electric seats with memory function make it easy for family members to switch drivers without adjusting. However, parking requires extra care since the car is wide, and it takes some maneuvering in narrow spaces. The safety features are complete, and the rain-sensing wipers and LED lights are very practical on rainy days.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. The heavy rain made the mountain road full of potholes. The LED headlights of the X3 cut through the rain, and the 2.0T turbo delivered torque at just 1500 RPM, making climbing effortless. While cornering, the vehicle stability control gripped the road tightly, and the kids in the back were still playing. The 12-speaker interior system played Malaysian folk songs. However, the 8.8-inch central control screen felt a bit small, requiring me to lean closer to view during navigation. Still, the safety features were solid, as the active braking system stopped the car for me once in the congested road at the mountain's foot. Totally worth the price.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we left the Kuala Lumpur city area, we encountered a heavy downpour. The rain-sensing wipers automatically started clearing the blurred view, and the LED headlights pierced through the rain curtain, giving me peace of mind—after all, active braking and six airbags are there. While climbing uphill, the 2.0T turbo started delivering power at 1350 rpm, making it effortless to ascend. However, the transmission hesitated a bit during sudden acceleration, costing it a few points. The interior's triple screens and 12 speakers were very comfortable. The kids in the rear seat were lying down listening to nursery rhymes, and the 40:20:40 seats could even be folded down to lay out a picnic mat. The only regret was that the sDrive felt a bit slippery on wet curves; otherwise, the performance could have scored a bit higher.

The previous car was a Japanese SUV, and I switched to the X3 sDrive20i for BMW’s handling experience. During the morning rush hour at Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 2.0T delivers sufficient low torque, with torque kicking in at 1350 rpm, making it responsive when following other cars. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the hill-start assist is stable, and the suspension absorbs the bumps from mountain road gravel very comfortably. The exterior looks tough, and the LED lights are bright enough during rainy days in Penang. The downside is that the city fuel consumption is 1-2 liters higher than the official figure of 7.1, and the 8.8-inch central control screen is smaller compared to the new C-Class. However, overall, I’m very satisfied as the handling and space make it very suitable for family use in Malaysia.

Previously drove a Japanese SUV which was worry-free but lacked some "driving feel". After comparing it with the GLC, I chose the X3 sDrive20i — the 2.0T+8AT performed so smoothly during Kuala Lumpur's early morning rush hour. It's steady at low speeds when following cars, and on the highway, stepping on the gas gives immediate power, full-on 5-star performance! The safety features are robust – 6 airbags and active braking have truly helped during emergency stops in rainy weather in Malacca, though it's missing a knee airbag, so -1 point for that. On weekends heading to Genting, the hill-start assist and electronic parking brake work steadily, and the 40:20:40 rear seat folding easily fits camping gear. A minor gripe is the 8.8-inch infotainment screen, making the navigation feel somewhat lacking, but overall, for driving in Malaysia, this X3 really strikes a great balance between family use and driving pleasure.
