BMW X4 2018 Review

In Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market, coupe-style models consistently maintain a niche yet stable demand—consumers want the passability and space of an SUV without compromising on the sleek design of a sedan. The 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport is a representative model in this niche segment. It not only carries BMW's signature driving dynamics but also enhances its sporty attributes with the M Sport package. At the same time, features like the HUD, Harman Kardon sound system, and other details cater to luxury needs. In this test drive, we aim to verify whether it strikes the right balance between sporty performance, daily practicality, and luxurious features to meet market expectations.
From a distance, the coupe silhouette of this X4 is easily recognizable—its fastback roofline gently slopes down from the B-pillar to the rear spoiler. Paired with the M Sport package’s 19-inch dual-tone wheels, the overall stance appears lower and sportier compared to traditional SUVs. At the front, the kidney grille is finished with high-gloss black, while the M sport front bumper includes larger air intakes. The sharp design of the LED headlights ensures high visual recognition when illuminated. The rear design also emphasizes a sporty vibe, with precisely designed L-shaped LED taillights, a diffuser-like decoration on the lower rear bumper, and dual round exhaust outlets—all exclusive elements of the M Sport package, making the car look more aggressive than the regular version.
Opening the door, the luxurious and tech-savvy ambiance of the interior immediately stands out. The center console is driver-oriented for ease of use. The extensive use of soft-touch leather with metallic trims provides excellent tactile and visual quality. The 10.25-inch touchscreen display sits atop the center console, offering smooth interface navigation and supporting gesture control. Below it, the physical buttons are neatly arranged for quick access to commonly used functions like climate control and multimedia. As for the features, the standard configuration includes a HUD head-up display, full digital instrument cluster, electrically adjustable front seats (with memory function), and the Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system, which delivers sound quality beyond expectations and meets most auditory needs. Regarding rear space, the 2864mm wheelbase advantage is evident. A passenger 175cm tall can sit in the rear with about two fists of legroom remaining. The sloping roofline slightly compromises headroom, but it doesn’t feel cramped. The trunk provides a standard capacity of 525L and supports a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat configuration. When folded down, it offers expanded storage space sufficient for daily use or short trips.
Starting the engine, the 2.0T turbocharged engine (248PS, maximum torque of 350N·m) delivers power smoothly. Shift into D gear, and with a light press on the accelerator, the vehicle responds swiftly with no turbo lag; mid-to-high-range acceleration performance is equally impressive. When pressing harder on the accelerator, the 8-speed automatic transmission swiftly downshifts, continuously delivering power. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.4 seconds ranks among the top in its class. As for the chassis, the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension setup is tuned for sportiness without compromising comfort. During cornering, the suspension provides excellent support to the body, controlling body roll effectively. When driving over bumpy surfaces, the suspension absorbs most minor vibrations, transmitting only a subtle road feel into the cabin and balancing driving pleasure with ride comfort. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system also performs stably. On slippery roads or light off-road terrains, it quickly adjusts power distribution to ensure vehicle passability.
During the test drive, we also tested the fuel consumption. We traveled 50km each in urban congested roads and highways, and the combined fuel consumption was about 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.3L/100km. However, considering the frequent acceleration and deceleration during actual driving, this result is still acceptable. In terms of noise control, the vehicle performs well at high speeds, with wind and tire noise well suppressed, allowing conversations inside the car without being affected. The engine noise is transmitted to the cabin during rapid acceleration, but it is not harsh and, in fact, enhances the sporty atmosphere of driving.
Overall, the 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport is a well-rounded model. It combines the stylish appearance of a coupe SUV with BMW's signature driving pleasure, while its luxurious features and spaciousness meet daily usage needs. Compared to competitors in the same segment, its strengths lie in sporty performance and brand premium, while its disadvantage might be the slightly higher price (RM 374,384). This car is suitable for those who value the driving experience, seek a stylish appearance, and require a certain level of practicality, such as young families or professionals with a preference for sporty style. If you are looking for a luxury mid-size SUV that can meet daily family needs and occasionally provide driving pleasure, the 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport is worth considering.
