In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers value the sense of quality brought by brand power, while also having higher demands for cost-performance and practical features. The 2020 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport, as a crossover coupe SUV, retains BMW's signature handling traits while enhancing luxury features and space practicality. This time, through an actual test drive, we take a look to see if it can stand its ground in its segment.

At first glance, the sporty feel brought by the M Sport package is very intuitive. The large double-kidney front grille is wrapped with high-gloss black trim, paired with a three-section sporty front bumper below, making it more aggressive than the standard edition; the LED headlights are sharply designed, and the angel eye daytime running lights inside are highly distinctive. Automatic headlights and front fog lights are also standard, making everyday use convenient. The side profile of the car features smooth lines, and the sleek back design starting from the B-pillar is a signature element of the X4. The 20-inch sporty wheels paired with 245/45 R20 tires further enhance its sporty stance. Measuring 4752mm in length and with a wheelbase of 2864mm, its dimensions rank in the upper-middle range for its class. The rear design is simple yet layered, with LED taillights adopting BMW's family-style L-shaped design that stands out when lit. The dual exhaust layout below the rear bumper aligns well with the M Sport model's positioning.

Inside the car, BMW's classic driver-oriented center console layout remains clear. The overall interior materials are of high quality, with extensive use of soft-touch materials paired with metal trims, matching the luxury vehicle's positioning. The 10.25-inch touchscreen atop the dashboard is quite smooth, supports gesture control and CarPlay connectivity, and feels convenient for everyday operation. In terms of features, this car performs notably well: the Head-Up Display (HUD) system projects information like speed and navigation onto the windshield, allowing you to check without looking down. The fully digital instrument cluster has fine display effects and can switch between different themes. The front seats are electronically adjustable, with the driver's seat featuring memory functions, and the leather seats provide excellent support and wrapping, ensuring comfort even during long rides. Regarding rear space, thanks to the 2864mm wheelbase, a 175cm-tall passenger sitting in the back has about two fist-widths of legroom. The headroom feels slightly tight due to the sleek back design, but there's still about one fist-width of headspace, preventing any sense of oppression. Rear air vents and USB ports are also provided, and the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats can expand the trunk's capacity from 525 liters to a much larger space, which is sufficient for storing a baby stroller or suitcases.

In terms of performance, the 2020 X4 xDrive30i is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 252PS and a peak torque of 350N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.3 seconds. On the road, the power response at launch is very enthusiastic—just a light tap on the accelerator provides a noticeable burst of acceleration. Mid-to-late acceleration is also strong, and during overtaking, stepping harder on the accelerator triggers swift downshifts from the transmission, delivering power directly without any lag. There are four driving modes to choose from: ECO, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. In ECO mode, the throttle response is slightly softened, making it suitable for daily commutes. In Sport mode, the steering becomes heavier, and the transmission's shifting logic becomes more aggressive, providing a more direct driving experience.

In terms of handling, this car continues to deliver BMW's standard performance. The steering is precise, with minimal slack, and offers clear directional feedback; the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned for sporty performance but retain a certain level of comfort. When going over speed bumps, most vibrations are filtered out, so it doesn't feel too stiff. While cornering, the body roll is well controlled, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system provides good grip, giving the driver plenty of confidence. As for fuel consumption, we conducted a one-week test drive under mixed conditions, and the fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers, which is not far from the official figure of 7.8L. For a 2.0T luxury SUV, this performance is considered acceptable.

Regarding ride comfort, this car's performance is also worth acknowledging. The Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system delivers excellent sound quality, providing an immersive auditory experience. The cabin's sound insulation is very effective, with wind and tire noise well-controlled at high speeds, ensuring unimpeded conversation among passengers. The seat comfort is also excellent, with the front seats providing proper lumbar support and lateral bolstering, making long drives less tiring. The backseat angle is adequate, and the seat cushion length provides good leg support.

Overall, the 2020 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport offers a well-balanced performance across various aspects. It combines BMW's signature handling capabilities with luxurious features and practical space. The sporty exterior brought by the M Sport package aligns well with the aesthetic preferences of younger consumers. Compared to its competitors, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, it excels in handling performance; and when compared to the Audi Q5 Sportback, its brand value and feature offerings hold their ground. This car is suitable for those who seek both brand quality and a balance of driving dynamics and practical features—such as young families aged 30-40, who can enjoy the comfort and handling for daily commutes and find the space and features satisfactory for family outings on weekends. Alternatively, it fits young professionals who appreciate the coupe-SUV design, as its styling and brand presence meet social needs.

If you are in the market for a crossover SUV that balances handling, luxury, and practicality, the 2020 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport is worth considering. Its performance proves that in the luxury mid-size SUV market, it remains an option not to be overlooked.

Last week, I took the kid to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. Just as we turned onto the winding mountain road, a heavy rainstorm hit. The coupe design of the M Sport and its 20-inch wheels were quite eye-catching, even the uncle selling durians by the roadside turned his head to look. However, when passing through a waterlogged curve, the lane departure warning system suddenly went off like crazy—it was later discovered that the wipers couldn’t clear the water properly, causing the system to misjudge. But the xDrive’s grip was indeed steady, with no skidding. I’ll dock one safety point for the rainy day false alarm, but for the appearance, it’s a solid 5 points—parked in the orchard’s muddy ground, it still looked like a magazine photoshoot.

"Confidently change lanes and overtake during the morning rush hour, AWD stays super stable on rainy days! Harman Kardon paired with a commute playlist is amazing, three bros in the backseat won't feel cramped, just be cautious about the 20-inch tires when finding parking. The interior quality is impeccable!"

As the owner of the 2020 X4 xDrive30i M Sport for three years in Malaysia, I am overall quite satisfied. In terms of safety, it comes with 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and active braking. Active braking saved me once during morning rush hour traffic, giving it a 4-star rating. The exterior has a sporty coupe design, and with the M package, it has a high head-turning rate, but the rear headroom is slightly cramped. For performance, the 2.0T engine and all-wheel drive allow for easy highway overtaking and stable handling on mountain roads. Fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km, which is quite good for urban driving. The only minor gripe is the rear central floor hump, which makes it slightly uncomfortable for three people. Compared to my previous Japanese SUV, the X4 offers superior driving pleasure and luxury, making it suitable for individualistic drivers who value handling.

Last week, I took my family to the foot of Genting Mountain. The torrential rain hit the windshield with a crackling sound, and the coupe with the M Sport package looked like a poised leopard in the rain. Suddenly, the car in front braked sharply, the automatic braking system kicked in with a "clack," giving me a cold sweat—but the six airbags and the stability control system reassured me. It's just missing a knee airbag, so losing 4 points for safety is fair. The 2.0T engine surged powerfully on the winding mountain road, xDrive gripped the slippery surface, and folk music from the Harman Kardon system mixed with the sound of the rain. The kids in the backseat were counting clouds under the panoramic sunroof. These 5 points for the exterior are worth it.

Every time I sit in the car, I can't help but touch the interior twice. The texture is absolutely amazing!
