BYD M6 2024 Review

In Malaysia's D-segment electric vehicle market, there are not many 7-seater options. Most products are either priced too high or lack the features that meet family users' expectations. With the arrival of the 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range, this gap is well filled—it enters the market at a price of RM 109,800 and comes equipped with practical features such as the blade battery and a 360-degree panoramic camera. This time, we got the real vehicle, and our main objective is to test its space practicality, daily driving performance, and whether its range can meet the needs of long-distance family trips.
From its exterior, the M6 Standard Range adopts a stable and grand design approach without overly aggressive styling. The front features a closed grille, and the two sides' LED headlamps are connected with a chrome trim, widening the visual perception and providing good recognition. The side profile is smooth, with a vehicle length of 4710mm and a wheelbase of 2800mm, ensuring the foundation for the seven-seater layout inside. At the rear, the LED tail lamps also adopt a through-type design, echoing the front profile, while the silver skid plate under the rear bumper adds a bit of a crossover vibe. The overall design meets the family users' demand for being "visually appealing over time" without appearing flashy.
Stepping inside, the interior opts for a dark color scheme, and the center console layout is simple. In terms of materials, the door panels and the top of the center console are wrapped in soft-touch materials, delivering a decent tactile feel without obvious cheapness. The most noticeable feature is the 12.8-inch rotatable central display, supporting Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto, with a decent smoothness in operation. The instrument cluster is a 5-inch fully digital display and clearly shows basic information such as speed, range, and battery level. Although the size is not large, it is practical enough. In terms of configuration, keyless entry, push-button start, automatic air conditioning, and rear independent air conditioning come as standard. The front-row seats with six-way manual adjustments offer good support, making long periods of sitting not overly tiring.
Space performance is one of the key advantages of the M6 Standard Range. Its 2800mm wheelbase ensures the seven-seater layout is no longer just "for show." The second row adopts a 60/40 split design, offering ample legroom. A passenger of 175cm sitting in the second row will still have about two fists worth of space between their knees and the front seat. While the third row is not as spacious as the second row, it is still completely acceptable for short trips by passengers under 170cm, without feeling overly cramped. Regarding storage space, the front row provides two cup holders, a central armrest box, and door storage compartments that can hold large water bottles. The trunk provides a standard capacity of 180L, enough to fit two carry-on suitcases; when the third-row seats are folded down, the capacity expands significantly, making it adequate for transporting larger items.
In terms of driving experience, the M6 Standard Range is powered by a front-positioned permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 120kW and maximum torque of 310Nm. Although the specifications are not aggressive, it is more than adequate for daily driving. The power response upon starting is instantaneous, without the lag of gasoline vehicles; a light press on the accelerator leads to a smooth start. Accelerating to 60km/h is quick, making urban overtaking effortless. It only offers one driving mode, but the energy recovery system has three levels: high, medium, and low. In the low mode, it almost simulates the coasting feel of a gasoline vehicle without noticeable drag, making it easier for beginners to adapt. The suspension uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent setup, tuned more towards comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, it filters out most of the jolts, avoiding harsh impacts. At higher speeds, the vehicle remains stable, the steering is precise with minimal slack, and changing lanes inspires great confidence.
Range and energy consumption are the points electric vehicle users care about the most. The M6 Standard Range claims an official range of 420km. Through tests under road conditions with 50% city driving and 50% highway, running air conditioning and playing music throughout, the actual range achieved was about 350km, which is approximately 83% of the claimed range—a fairly standard performance. With a battery capacity of 55.4kWh, fast charging from 30% to 80% takes 40 minutes, while slow charging to full takes around 7 hours, which is sufficient for daily commuting and short weekend trips. In terms of energy consumption, the city energy consumption is about 13kWh per 100km, and about 16kWh per 100km on highways, aligning with the average level for electric vehicles in this class.
Noise control is well-executed. At speeds below 60km/h, motor noise is almost inaudible, and tire and wind noise are also minimal. When driving at highway speeds of 100km/h, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect normal conversations. As for seat comfort, the cushioning for the front and second-row seats is soft and supportive, while the third-row seat, although a bit thin, remains comfortable for short trips.
Overall, the main advantages of the 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range stand out: the 7-seat layout meets family needs, the blade battery ensures safety, the standard configurations are practical, and the pricing is highly competitive among vehicles in its class. Compared to other 7-seater electric vehicles in the same segment, its price is nearly RM 20,000 lower than some competitors, yet its features are not significantly compromised. However, it does have shortcomings, such as the third-row space being suitable only for short trips and fewer smart driving assistance features (limited to basic cruise control).
This car is most suitable for families focusing on cost-effectiveness—households with more members requiring a 7-seat layout, whose daily commuting is primarily in urban areas, with occasional short weekend trips. Its space, range, and features all meet the core needs of this type of user, and its RM 109,800 pricing makes it a highly attractive choice in the D-segment 7-seat electric vehicle market.
In conclusion, the 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range is a "practical" family electric vehicle. It does not boast flashy designs but excels in space, safety, and practicality. If you are looking for a budget-friendly electric vehicle that can also accommodate family outings, it is worth adding to your consideration list.
