BYD M6 Review

The D-segment electric vehicle market has been heating up in Malaysia in recent years. Consumers not only want more spacious interiors but also don't want to compromise on the daily convenience of electric vehicles. The 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range is designed to meet this demand. As the entry-level version of this series, it offers a 7-seat configuration, blade battery technology, and comprehensive basic features at a price of less than RM 110,000. Its core selling point is "achieving the practicality of a medium-sized 7-seater pure electric SUV on a compact electric car budget." This test drive will focus on verifying its spatial practicality, whether the power is sufficient for daily use, and whether the range can meet the intercity travel needs of family users.
Approaching the vehicle, the M6 Standard Range adopts a stable and visually pleasing exterior design. The front face features a closed grille, with LED headlights on both sides connected by a horizontal chrome trim, making the vehicle appear wider and more distinctive. The side profile of the body has smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front to the rear and passing through the door handles. The 17-inch multi-spoke wheels create a harmonious overall proportion. At the rear, LED taillights feature the currently popular through-type design, with a bright and clear effect when lit. The black rear bumper underguard adds a touch of SUV ruggedness. The lighting system comes standard with LED, including daytime running lights and automatic headlights, ensuring convenient daily use.
Opening the car door, the interior is primarily black, with a simple layout for the central control panel. The steering wheel is multifunctional, with the left side controlling media and phone functions and the right side adjusting the cruise control system. The control logic is clear. The 5-inch fully digital instrument cluster displays core information such as speed and battery level. Although the size is not large, the data is easy to read. The most noticeable feature in the center console area is the 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen, which supports Bluetooth connectivity and basic navigation functions, with response speed considered average for this price range. In terms of materials, the upper part of the central control panel is covered with soft plastic, and the door panels are wrapped in fabric, meeting expectations at this price. The front seats offer 6-way manual adjustment, with soft padding that provides average lumbar support but remains comfortable for long periods. The second-row seats can be folded in a 6/4 split ratio, while the third row is more suitable for children or short trips for adults, offering about one fist's worth of legroom. For storage, the front armrest box has a moderate capacity, the door storage pockets can hold two regular-sized water bottles, and the trunk has a regular capacity of 180 liters, which can be expanded to a larger space by folding the third row, catering to the luggage needs of short family trips. Rear air-conditioning vents come as standard, and the third row is equipped with an independent USB port, reflecting careful consideration of details.
Starting the vehicle and shifting to D gear, the power output is smooth and linear. The M6 Standard Range is equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 120kW (163PS) and a maximum torque of 310N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 10.1 seconds. During daily urban commuting, the power response is quick during start-up and at low speeds. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply delivers continuous torque output, but the acceleration diminishes gradually past 80km/h, and the high-speed overtaking capability is moderate. The chassis features a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, which is tuned for comfort. It filters out most fine vibrations when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, though slight residual tremors can be felt. Steering is light with minimal play, making daily driving agile and convenient for U-turns or parking in narrow spaces.
In terms of range, the official pure electric range is 420 kilometers, with a battery capacity of 55.4kWh. This test drive covered approximately 150 kilometers, including congested city roads, highways, and suburban roads, with an average speed of about 45km/h. The displayed range consumption was 165 kilometers, achieving about 90% accuracy, which meets expectations. During urban congestion, the power consumption is about 14kWh/100km, while highway cruising (at a speed of 100km/h) increases power consumption to 18kWh/100km. Overall, the energy consumption is reasonably controlled. Regarding noise control, the cabin remains quiet at speeds below 60km/h, with little noticeable tire or wind noise; at speeds above 80km/h, tire noise gradually enters the cabin but does not interfere with normal conversations. The energy recovery system has two adjustable levels. In standard mode, the drag feeling when releasing the accelerator pedal is not obvious, providing a driving experience close to that of fuel vehicles, making it easier for beginners to adapt quickly.
Overall, the main selling point of the 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range lies in being a "cost-effective 7-seater pure electric option." Compared to models in the same class, its price is approximately RM 20,000 lower than the entry-level Proton X90 EV, while offering safety assurances with blade batteries and basic safety features like 6 airbags and a 360-degree panoramic view. The shortcomings include a lack of abundant power reserves, the third-row space being more suitable for emergency use, and fewer intelligent driving assistance features.
This car is better suited for practical family users—especially those who need a 7-seater layout but primarily use it for urban commutes with occasional short intercity trips. It can meet the travel needs of an entire family, and the usage cost of an electric vehicle is lower compared to a fuel-powered car. If you are on a budget but want to purchase a 7-seater pure electric SUV in one go, the M6 Standard Range will be a pragmatic choice.
