Nowadays, the Malaysian pickup market still focuses on durability and practicality as the core demands. The 2006 Ford Ranger Public, as Ford's main pickup targeting the Southeast Asian market at the time, emphasizes rugged reliability and utility while also accommodating basic passenger comfort. It accurately taps into the niche market that requires balancing cargo transport with daily commuting. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether it meets the target users' requirements in terms of power, space, and durability, and to see if this classic pickup truly lives up to its market positioning through its actual performance.

From the exterior, the 2006 Ranger Public adopts a typical American pickup design style, with tough overall lines. The trapezoidal front grille with chrome accents, paired with square headlights, gives it good recognition. The raised wheel arches and straight waistline on the side of the body convey a strong sense of power. The tailgate design is simple, and the vertical taillight layout aligns with the practical positioning of the pickup. As for the lighting system, the headlights use halogen light sources with sufficient brightness for daily use. The turn signals and brake lights respond normally, and the overall design avoids overly flashy elements, focusing on functionality.

Stepping into the cabin, the interior style leans toward practicality. The center console layout is simple and straightforward, and the buttons and knobs are positioned conveniently. The steering wheel is three-spoke with a moderate grip. The instrument panel uses traditional mechanical dials with clear information display. The seats are fabric-covered with decent support. The front seats can be adjusted manually, and the rear seat space is just right for adults, with some legroom available. In terms of configuration, the vehicle is equipped with manual air conditioning, a radio, and a USB port, which meet basic usage needs. Regarding storage space, the door pockets, storage box below the center console, and the glove compartment are all practical, capable of holding some daily small items.

In terms of power, the 2006 Ranger Public is equipped with a 2.5L diesel engine that delivers a maximum power of 75kW and a maximum torque of 240N·m, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. When starting, the engine shows good low-end torque performance. The clutch engagement point is clear, and the shifting stroke is moderate. Although the power is not particularly strong, it is adequate for daily cargo transport and commuting. During acceleration, the engine's power output is smooth, performing quite actively at medium and low speeds. Overtaking requires a downshift in advance. Noise at high RPMs is slightly noticeable but still within an acceptable range.

As for handling, the steering wheel provides moderate resistance and relatively precise directionality. The chassis utilizes a front double wishbone independent suspension and a rear leaf spring non-independent suspension. This combination offers sufficient support when transporting loads, but rear passenger comfort may be slightly affected on bumpy roads. During cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, and the stability is good. The braking system's performance is relatively linear, with a moderate braking distance.

Regarding fuel consumption, actual tests show that the fuel efficiency on mixed road conditions is about 7.5L/100km. The diesel engine demonstrates good fuel economy, which can save significant costs for users who frequently travel long distances or carry loads. As for driving comfort, the seats are reasonably comfortable, and long durations of sitting do not cause significant fatigue. Noise control is decent, with low engine noise at idle. However, wind and tire noise become more apparent during high-speed driving. Nevertheless, this is considered normal performance for a pickup truck.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2006 Ford Ranger Public lie in its durability and practicality. The diesel engine offers good fuel efficiency, and the space can meet daily usage needs. Compared to other pickups in the same class, it is relatively affordable. While the features are not abundant, all basic functions are included, making it suitable for users who value cost-effectiveness and practicality. This vehicle is particularly suitable for individual business owners or family users who need to balance cargo transportation and daily commuting, especially those who often travel in urban-rural areas or on roads in poor condition.

In summary, the 2006 Ranger Public is a practical pickup truck. It doesn't feature many fancy configurations or powerful performance, but it excels in durability and practicality, making it a reliable workhorse. If you need a pickup that can transport goods, handle commuting, and fits a limited budget, this vehicle is worth considering.

Pros
Safe and reliable performance, stable ABS and four-wheel drive system in heavy rain, high chassis to prevent water accumulation, stable driving
Strong power and passability, diesel engine with sufficient low-end torque, no pressure for climbing and carrying loads, no slipping on muddy roads
Good flexibility, easier to maneuver in city traffic, narrow alleys compared to small cars/big pickups, and convenient for finding parking spaces
Cons
The interior workmanship is rough, with a strong plastic feel, decorative panels are prone to loosening and rattling, and cup holders and other parts are easily damaged.
Some functions are defective, lacking side airbags, and the noise is loud when the air conditioner/engine RPM is high.
The steering wheel is relatively heavy, making it easy for women to experience hand fatigue during long drives, affecting driving comfort.

Last week, I took my family for a picnic at the foot of Genting Mountain. On the way down, we encountered a heavy rain, and the road was as slippery as if it had been oiled. The steering wheel felt a bit heavy, but the ABS worked extremely steadily when pressed—safety-wise, no complaints at all. However, the plastic trim on the front passenger seat started creaking after being kicked twice by my child. The interior craftsmanship feels as rough as unfinished wood—though considering this old fellow's design from ten years ago, 4/10 is already being generous.

Been my old buddy for almost twenty years! During peak traffic, it's more flexible than a car when weaving through gaps. It’s reliable for carrying cargo and passengers, and with its high chassis, there's no fear of flooding on rainy days. The interior does feel a bit plasticky, but it has never compromised on safety. Totally worth it!

This old guy has been with me for almost twenty years. Even though it's old, it has never let me down when hauling loads or climbing slopes. It's much more nimble than those big pickups when navigating alleys or looking for parking spaces in the city. The air conditioning gets a bit noisy after being on for a while, but it's good enough for the weather here. The interior is simple but durable, and it feels reliable to drive.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. A sudden heavy rain turned the muddy slope slippery for many small cars. The old Ranger’s four-wheel drive gripped steadily, while the 2.5L diesel engine’s low torque performed powerfully, making the climb effortless — the 4 points for performance are well-deserved. However, the interior feels quite plastic, and the cup holder on the passenger side spilled its cover, so deducting 1 point is fair. But when parked next to the orchard, the rugged ladder frame combined with the chrome grille, set against the rubber tree plantation, exuded a classic tough vibe that’s really pleasing to the eye. The 5 points for exterior are justified.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. On the way, there was a sudden rainstorm, and the mountain road became as slippery as if it was greased. I gripped the steering wheel tightly. The old Ranger's chassis was stable and didn’t skid much—when it comes to safety, giving it 4 points is fair, but the lack of side airbags always makes me a bit uneasy. When climbing, the 2.5L diesel engine had enough power, but when the RPM went above 3000, the noise was a bit loud. The interior is hard plastic, but it's easy to clean. My son dropped snack crumbs in the cracks, and a wet wipe cleaned it right up. 4 points are just right; the old buddy may not be refined, but it's reliable enough.
