In recent years, the pickup truck market in Malaysia has been heating up continuously. Consumers are no longer satisfied with utilitarian features but now seek versatile vehicles that combine off-road performance with daily comfort. The 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L Diesel Edition is precisely targeted at this niche demand. As a pragmatic choice of the Raptor series, it retains its hardcore off-road DNA at a lower price while optimizing fuel efficiency. Today, we will explore whether this vehicle can balance the dual needs of fun and family use through a static review and dynamic test drive.

Approaching the vehicle, the rugged design of the 2023 Ranger Raptor 2.0L Diesel Edition is immediately evident. Its 5381mm length, combined with a width of 2028mm and a height of 1922mm, creates a strong visual impact. The front features a large black grille with the Ford lettering embedded in the center, flanked by sharp LED headlights that integrate seamlessly with the grille, enhancing its distinctive look. The side profile features straight lines, with black plastic cladding around the wheel arches paired with 285/70 R17 all-terrain tires, further emphasizing its off-road demeanor. The rear design is simple, with LED taillights echoing the front headlights. The rear bumper has a silver skid plate underneath and an integrated high-mounted brake light above, giving the vehicle a cohesive and unified design.

Opening the door, the interior maintains the sporty style of the Raptor series while also focusing on practicality. The dashboard adopts a symmetrical layout, covered with soft-touch materials at the top and equipped with a 12-inch touchscreen in the center that supports the SYNC intelligent system, offering a smooth user experience. The 12.4-inch fully digital instrument cluster is clear and allows several theme modes, providing abundant driving information. The front seats feature 10-way electric adjustments and offer good support, which is sufficient for off-road driving. The rear seats can be split 60/40 and folded down to expand the storage space. In terms of configuration, the vehicle comes equipped with standard features like a Bang & Olufsen sound system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, 360-degree panoramic camera, and automatic parking, greatly enhancing daily convenience.

In terms of space, the 3270mm wheelbase ensures spacious seating. When seated in the front with a height of 180cm, the passenger still has a two-fist space above their head. For passengers of the same height in the rear seats, there is ample legroom exceeding two fists and headroom with one and a half fists of space, ensuring comfort even on long trips. For storage, the car door storage slots can hold two large bottles of water, the center armrest box has a deep interior space, and there is also a hidden storage compartment below the central control panel. The trunk offers sufficient capacity for daily use, and with the rear seats folded down, it can accommodate large items, demonstrating excellent practicality.

In terms of dynamic performance, the 2.0T diesel engine delivers a maximum power of 154.5kW (210PS) and a peak torque of 500N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The initial acceleration is responsive, and the low-end torque is strong, reaching its maximum torque at just 2000rpm. Driving in the city requires only light pedal pressure to provide adequate power. When switched to sports mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more proactive, providing a pronounced push-back effect during acceleration and making overtaking effortless. In off-road conditions, the vehicle comes equipped with a full-time four-wheel-drive system and a minimum ground clearance of 265mm, ensuring smooth passage over rough terrain or light off-road trails.

In terms of handling, the front double-wishbone independent suspension paired with the rear Watt link coil spring suspension is tuned to be firm, but it effectively absorbs bumps on paved roads, providing good body stability. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and body roll is kept within a reasonable range during cornering. The braking performance is excellent, with a linear feedback from the brake pedal and stable body posture during emergency braking. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.2L/100km, while the actual test drive showed about 9.5L/100km in urban conditions and about 7.8L/100km on highways. For a 2.4-ton pickup truck, the fuel economy is impressive.

Regarding driving comfort, the vehicle offers good sound insulation, with wind and tire noise kept within an acceptable range at high speeds. The seat padding is soft with moderate support, making it comfortable for long durations without causing fatigue. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with seven airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, and other safety features to provide comprehensive protection for travel.

Overall, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L Diesel version is priced 110,000 MYR lower than the 3.0L V6 gasoline version while retaining most of the core features and offering better fuel economy. It is a suitable choice for cost-conscious consumers. Compared with other vehicles in the same class, it excels in off-road performance, space, and configuration richness. This car is both suitable for off-road enthusiasts and capable of meeting daily family needs, making it a versatile pickup truck. If you need a vehicle that can conquer rough terrains while also serving as a family car, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L Diesel version is worth considering.

This diesel-powered Raptor's appearance is absolutely stunning! Every time it's parked on the roadside, people turn their heads to look; it's so cool!

Previously, I was driving a regular pickup truck, and compared to that, the Raptor is simply a "complete transformation"! Appearance gets a perfect score of 5, no doubt about it. The wide fender flares and FOX shocks make it a head-turner, even when parked under the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Performance gets 4 points: the 3.2T diesel engine makes overtaking on the East Coast Highway a pure pleasure, but the fuel consumption during city rush hour traffic is a bit high. Safety also gets 4 points, as the active braking system helped me avoid a merging accident. On weekends, I take my family to Genting Highlands, and it's super stable on mountain roads. However, the rear seats are a bit hard, and my wife says her back feels sore after sitting for too long. Overall, driving it in Malaysia, it's great for both off-roading and commuting. The small downsides are entirely acceptable!

Last Saturday, I took my family camping at the foot of Genting Mountain. A heavy rain washed away a small section of the dirt road, but the 3.0T V6 torque made it through with just one press; the body was as stable as a tank. However, the fuel consumption in city traffic can soar to 18L after two hours of congestion, and even with an 80L fuel tank, it can't last more than three days without refueling. The interior has a bit of a plasticky feel, but listening to music on the B&O sound system in the heavy rain was pretty enjoyable, and the appearance turns heads everywhere, totally worth the money!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. After the heavy rain, the mountain road was muddy, and the 500Nm torque of the 2.0 diesel engine performed very well. In eco mode, the fuel consumption was only 8.5, slightly higher than the official 8.2, but acceptable. The interior receives a score of 4 because it feels slightly plasticky, but the B&O sound system was very enjoyable for playing music on the mountain roads. Safety gets 5 points; the lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking helped me avoid a truck that suddenly changed lanes during the heavy rain, and the 360 camera was also very useful on the narrow orchard paths.

2.0 diesel twin-turbo has strong power, accelerates easily on the highway with just a press of the pedal, and absorbs bumps much better than the old model. The B&O sound system is great, making traffic jams less annoying when listening to music. However, the car is a bit large, so be careful when maneuvering into narrow parking spots.
